bliss nail spa launch party: a bliss-tastic affair
On Friday, October 3, Bliss Nail Spa welcomed more than 200 guests to celebrate its long awaited grand opening Launch Party. Though Ike managed to postpone the event by two weeks, Bliss prevailed, attracting a dynamic mix of Houston’s scenesters, young professionals, savvy socialites, and established executives.
The early-evening affair kicked off with DJ Senega behind the turn-table, spinning beats to set the mood. Sassy models strut their stuff amongst the crowd, showing of their perfect pedicures and the latest shoes by Donald J. Pliner. Two drawings throughout the night which gave lucky winners a Bliss Pampering Package valued at $175 and a gift certificate for a party of 10 to Sheila Kelley’s S Factor.
While sipping pink champagne, elixir blends, and BLISS-tini made of 360 Vodka, guests mingled, danced and ultimately witnessed all that Bliss Nail Spa’s 2,200 square-foot couture sanctuary had to offer. The spa’s interior, embellished with Bliss’ trademark colors—rich chocolate, pale pink, creamy white, and powder blue— was complemented with fresh flowers, rose petals, and custom-made tea lights. The exterior, covered by a tent, was endowed with chic coffee tables, chairs and sofas provided by Euro-Space, creating a sexy outdoor lounge atmosphere.
Satisfying the guest’s appetites was Chef Tarsha from CraveGourmet Bakery & Catered Café. While three kinds of savory hors d’ oeuvres surfed the crowd on silver platters, “Spicy Black Bean Tartlets,”“Mediterranean Feta Tartlets” and “Salmon Tulips,” a decadent display of cupcakes was presented by Sugarbaby’s Cupcake Boutique for those with more of a sweet-tooth.
As a part of their ongoing efforts to give back, Bliss Nail Spa wanted to support an organization that they firmly believe in, Dress for Success (www.dressforsuccess.org/houston), a non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged women by providing them with professional attire, a network of support, and the career development tools necessary to thrive in work and in life. Bliss Nail Spa donated 10% of the total sales to Dress for Success after offering 10% off all gift certificates, retail products and servicesbooked during the party.
Total Body and Health & Fitness were the press sponsors for the event.
Attendees included:
Gordon & Silvia Quan, Ross Carlson, Michael Jang, Lauren Levicki, Joseph Lincoln, Wendy Reeves, Yuki Rogers, Theresa Lara, Diane Do, Stephanie & Gil Talafuse, Nicole Taylor, Jean Wilson, and Shelly Gray, to name a few.
As Houston’s first nail bar, Bliss Nail Spa offers an ultra-hip environment that exudes a stylish and modern ambiance. With the design inspired by a creamy Neapolitan treat, Bliss Nail Spa will leave you licking your well-manicured fingers with blissful indulgence. Trendy music, runway news via plasma screens, and hip cocktails create the perfect spot for a quick lunchtime break or an on-the-way perk-up session. Besides an array of services by appointment, the Nail Bar is available, with dedicated reserved parking spaces, for the impulse types who just want to dash in-and-out for a quick fix before a night on the town. Bliss Nail Spa is located in the hot Washington Corridor/Heights neighborhood – 701 Shepherd Drive, Houston 77007. For more info call 713-864-8787 or visit www.bliss-nailspa.com.

put your money where your mouth is
Elisea Frishberg’s relatable personality, positive attitude, and optimist outlook on life not only define her character, but also got her to where she is today. As a Philippine native and the youngest of five siblings, Elisea’s childhood consisted of little parental supervision and minimal opportunity to succeed in life. While she may have been on her own as a child, Elisea did not let her hardships defeat her, instead, they motivated her; it is her passion for success and optimism that gives her the ability to turn all things negative into something positive.
Now, living in Houston, Alisea and her husband Dan Frisberg are owners of the Biz Radio Network. Elisea has recently been using the Biz Radio air waves to inform and inspire listeners. Her on-air show gives listeners tips and advice about finances, business, and everything in between. Her knowledge of the subjects is in large part from her education, but more so, from her own experiences and knowledge about investment and finance.
The Biz Radio network covers two of the 10 largest media markets in the United States, Greater Houston, AM 1110 KTEK, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, AM 1360. Founded by Daniel Frishberg and headquartered in Houston, Biz Radio is one of the fastest growing radio networks in the country, covering business-oriented programming seven days a week, mainly related to investing, under the tagline "The Sound of Your Money Growing". During the other hours, the stations broadcast non-business related programming (big band music in DFW and Vietnamese programming in Houston).
We understand you are from the Philippines; what brought you to the US? I have always wanted to come to America; my mother told me- you have to finish your education first, then you can fly away- I finished at age 19, before that, I learned English from reading comic books and reading magazines. I did not see electricity until I was 19 years old, my mother and sister were then living in Las Vegas, so I was off to Las Vegas…from no lights to, all lights.
You and your husband just bought Biz Radio; tell us the story behind this. You can have whatever you want in this country; 10 years before we had radio stations, I believed Daniel’s talent could best be served by having his voice be heard in all forms. He came from Wall Street, his grandparents wanted him to be an investment banker; all he knew about was Wall Street from the age of 10 years old, and he used that wonderful knowledge to advance himself. I found a niche, that certain ability to communicate to the public, especially about the market. In life you have to be extra ordinary and somehow he was using that special skill for his own use, so I asked him to share it to the public and it really works.
Who is Biz Radio’s primary audience? Bizradio’s primary audience is the affluent market with disposable income…and they use their brain to get a better deal.
You are a hard working, successful business woman. Briefly describe how you got to where you are today. I was the child of another world and the woman of the other- and it is really fascinating. I put my head low to the ground, and always remember my values- respect everyone and give everyone opportunity any time of the day. I know I will always get what I want, and this is the only country that allows me to do so, and I always give back to the community, I am extremely thankful.
You seem so natural when you are on the air. What are some tips you would give someone who is trying to polish their public speaking skills? To be in public speaking, you start by being a bad speaker. You have to keep improving your skill. It does not matter how many people you are speaking to- it might be 40,000 people or one person, you have to look all the way to the back of the room. That is what I learned from Frank Cappiello, who helped me all along. It does not matter if you have an accent or not, if your content is compelling people will listen to you.
As a strong Asian woman, how do you balance your values; those of the East and West are quite conflicting. I know who I am and I do not get it confused. I came from nothing- I was just lucky and to meet the right people - I have to carry my load to be somebody. It does not matter who is watching me or who is around, I behave the same, I do the job to the best of my ability and more. I always, if all possible, double what is expected of me.
We hear you have three children. What are your expectations for them? Do they have any particular aspirations in mind? I want them to be happy inside. It makes a lot of difference, the first one was a learning curve, I was telling her what to do and I did not understand – you grow and learn with them. I told her she was my first time and that there is this responsibility that I have to do called parenting and that I will do my very best to not destroy her creativity and I needed her participation. She is a straight A’s student and very driven. She is now at USC, California. I also have a 15 and a 10-year old. They are happy inside and very driven just like me and always give 100%. I am very blessed.
Have you always been career minded, or has your career unfolded as a result of your kids growing older, giving you more time to explore different passions? I was the youngest of all 5 kids; I believed I did not have any supervision, so whatever failure I had, it was not a failure, it was an opportunity to try it again. So, I had – and still have - no fear. It makes a difference.
Considering the state of the economy right now, what is your best piece of advice for the general public in terms of making the most of their dollar? Learn, and never again will your money be cut in half because you did not participate actively with your 401k or your money. No one should be making decisions about your money but you. We delegate these things because it is too much trouble, but consider the trouble you will get into by not making the effort of learning about and handling your own money/business. It takes awhile, but like running a family, running a business and managing money is the same. If you do not understand it, you should not do it. If someone comes to you and tells you to “invest in me- I got a restaurant, I want you to put $500,000 down,” you would not in your right mind give him the money right away. Hopefully, the next day you will, if you were serious, check out his place, location, what kind of person he is, what his expectations are, etc. You do everything you can to check him and his business out. This is how you should handle your money. However, do not just handle it, learn it. No one gets ahead by hating something; you will learn to love managing your money just like me.
How do you unwind when you’re not working? Easy…music…hot tub…run…run like nobody’s business. The first hour it hurts, the next hour if you last, you are walking on clouds, the endorphins will kick it, trust me on this one. I never liked running until I had to try; again, I told myself no one gets ahead in life by hating something, so I run.
What advice could you give women in terms of taking control of their lives and their money? There seems to be a uniform understanding that money is hard to understand, we operate it like cotton, part of our brain is like cotton when we talk about money. Learn to love it. Look at movie stars; if they do not manage their money, they end up broke.
What are your future plans? To rule the world- teaching everyone to be financially literate and to be financially independent. Listen to bizradio.com

This holiday season, give yourself the gift of a Liquid Facelift – the latest rage in non-invasive skin rejuvenation. Whether you are male or female, socialite or soccer mom, young or mature, the Liquid Facelift will give you dramatic results instantaneously with little or no downtime. Known as the facelift of the 21st century, the Liquid Facelift offers a revolutionary approach to treating sagging facial features, smoothing wrinkles, creases or folds, and restoring natural facial contours. The result is a refreshed and youthful look – without going under the knife.
The non-invasive procedure employs a combination of BOTOX® and injectable dermal fillers. Dermagenix Medical Spa offers a variety of long-lasting dermal fillers—Juvederm™, Radiesse®, Restylane® and Artefill®—in order to customize every patient’s Liquid Facelift.
Each filler has exclusive attributes, working in its own way to contour specific areas of the face. In broad terms, dermal fillers replace lost volume by helping the body regenerate its own collagen. Precisely placed, dermal fillers can be used to lift or contour any number of facial features. BOTOX®, known for its ability to smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, actually reduces the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines. With a skillful set of hands, dermal fillers and BOTOX® combined is the key to the most natural yet dramatic results. Unlike a traditional facelift that calls for surgery, anesthesia and significant recovery time, Dermagenix’sLiquid Facelift takes less than an hour without sedation. Recovering over a weekend or less, patients can be back to work by Monday.
Like any cosmetic procedure, results are not typical. Physician’s experience and skill can, in many instances, improve and extend results. To optimize outcomes, board-certified Dr. Kim Vo takes into account each patient’s unique facial characteristics and expectations when performing a Liquid Facelift, determining precisely where, how much, and which filler to use. Her skills were acquired through the combined B.S. /M.D. program at Kent State University and Northeastern Ohio University ’s College of Medicine . She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and a member of the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine, Center for Performing Arts Medicine, American College of Physicians, Harris County Medical Association and the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery.
While Dermagenix provides dramatic, revitalizing procedures by appointment, patients can also maintain a healthy complexion at home using the Dermagenix Skincare product line. Save Steps using the Pure and Simple Cleansing Lotion, an all-in-one facial cleanser, astringent and makeup remover. To sweep away dry, rough skin, try the Pumpkin and Pumice Body Polish or Herbal Vitamin Mist. These products, recently featured on Debra Duncan’s Great Day Houston show, will make an excellent holiday gift or stocking stuffer. They are an essential to sustaining fresh, younger looking skin. Whether you are looking for a fast-facial-fix or the perfect holiday gift, Dermagenix can help you treat yourself while you treat your loved ones.
Elite among Medical Spas, Houston ’s Dermagenix stands out for many reasons. As one of the few medical spas in Houston with a board-certified physician on site to consult and perform all laser and injectable procedures, Dermagenix specializes in aesthetic medicine and skin rejuvenation.
Throughout November and December, Dermagenix offers the following specials:
• Liquid Facelift - 15% off all BOTOX, Juvederm, Radiesse and Artefill • Dermagenix Gift Certificate - Buy $100, get an additional $15
• Combat stress during the holidays - 25% off all Spa Packages - massages, facials (including Vibraderm), and waxing
For your convenience, Dermagenix has extended their hours for Friday to be from 10AM to 7PM. Dermagenix is located at 6030 S. Rice, suite A, Houston 77081 between The Galleria and the city of Bellaire . For more information call them at 713-662-DERM or visit their website www.dermagenix.net.

“Calm, cool and collected; Dr. Kim Vo’s professionalism and in-depth knowledge inspire confidence. It’s evident to me this board-certified internist has not only studied the latest techniques in cosmetic skin rejuvenation but can astutely survey your complexion and prescribe the type of technique and skincare regime most apropos to your dilemma. I felt very much at ease consulting this detail-oriented physician, who personally performed the minor laser IPL work I needed with the utmost skill and care”

i’ll take chicago!
By: Mimi Dinh
Our main reason for coming to Chicago was for work this past July, but hey, any excuse for my husband and I to get out of Houston once in a while is okay by us, especially to a place we’ve never been before. And although known as the “windy-city,” I thought Chicago was fabulous…including the weather!
While I had managed to finish-up work within the first day, my husband’s conference lasted the entire time we were there. It’s safe to say I had a lot of time to myself; so, I decided to explore Chicago solo. By foot, trolley, and taxi, I hit what seemed to be the majority of Chicago’s hot-spots. While I could pay tribute to each and every place I visited, I will spare you and list only my favorites…
Sitting By The Dock of A Bay… - Our hotel was within walking distance, so it would have been a shame to come to Chicago without experiencing the history and excitement surrounding the Navy Pier. Encompassing more than 50 acres, the Navy Pier offers attractions like the IMAX Theater; The Chicago Children’s Museum, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the Navy Pier Beer Garden, more than 80 retail shops, the Crystal Gardens indoor botanical park, and most notably, the 148-foot Ferris Wheel, built for the 1893 World Columbian Exposition.
As boring as it may sound, my morning routine included walking over to the pier and jogging up and down the area. Then catching my breath afterwards on the bench, just watching people. Sometimes I would bring my work and contemplate on the bench, feeling happy just “being” in the moment, deep in my thoughts.
They Don’t Call Magnificent Mile For Nothing – To come to Chicago and not experience its shopping on “Magnificent Mile” is like going to Paris and not see the Eiffel Tower. The Magnificent Mile Retail District, the northern part of Michigan Avenue between the Chicago River and Lake Shore Drive, is one of Chicago's most prestigious boulevards; compete with exclusive shops, museums, restaurants and ritzy hotels. It’s like Rodeo Drive with plenty of flashy, designer stores, but with a lot more store selections. From Bloomingdales to Saks Fifth Avenue, from Chanel to Juicy Couture, every fashion store you can think of. Just when you thought you had died and gone to shopping heaven, another store caught your eye, and then another, and another… I felt so overwhelmed and exhausted at the end of the day, even though I mostly did just window shop. It was more like Magnificent Dozen Miles. I tried to embrace some self-control but I eventually gave in and did some damage. (I guess this is why male conference attendees have been known to leave their wives at home! It’s too dangerous a place for us females).
In addition to shopping, I was surprised to find that the Magnificent Mile also embodied some of the city’s most amazing architectural landmarks, like the John Hancock Center and the Tribune Tower. This made my shopping experience even more special, since I love architecture as much as I do fashion.
Something A Little Edgier - As magnificent as the Magnificent Mile, I have to admit, I am more of an “independent label”, “boutique-y” kind of girl. I later found myself in Lincoln Park, a pretty, tree-lined neighborhood that is home to some of Chicago’s best boutiques, and the surrounding area, Bucktown. Visiting shops like Alphabetique, 1153 Lill Studio, Krista K, Red Head, and Penelope’s; I was as much inspired by their creative styles as their eclectic spirits. It was fun to see quirky stores, from create-your-own bags, to vintage skirts and sequined cardigans. This was more “downtown” compared to magnificent Mile’s “uptown” vibe.
Martinis anyone? – My former intern, Jason – who had moved here eight months ago – took me to the most amazing scene for drinks one evening. Japonais is known for its uber-trendy French/Asian fusion cuisine, boasting the most coveted tables in town. But it’s Japonais’ exciting, yet intimate Jeffrey Beers-designed setting that impressed me. Entering the restaurant is awe-inspiring experience, but we came late, so we bypassed the red-hot upstairs dining room and descended downstairs to a cool-white, low-lit swanky lounge. I loved its aesthetics with clean, modern couches, low tables, and sexy artwork on the walls; each area is created in a separate vignette that allows a guest to have different experiences. The unique décor was the basis of much of our evening’s conversation. Japonais’ extensive drinks menu is difficult to rival, with 20 types of sake and an impressive wine list features wines from all over the world which can be purchased by the bottle. I ordered their signature ‘floating orchid’ cocktail made of Stolichnaya vodka, Cointreau, fresh pear juice topped with an edible orchid garnish.
With our martini in hand, we ventured outside to the patio that was even more fabulous than the indoor lounge. Beautiful people everywhere either sitting on the canopied deck, in a private cabana, or standing by the rail at river walk level overlooking the Chicago River. We felt a little buzzed, as the delicious martinis gave us license to own the patio like we were anonymous. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed every minute soaking in the breeze beneath the gorgeous skylight as we were catching up on each other’s lives.
Attention chocoholics –
Chocolate lovers beware, I stumbled upon Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge and haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since. Among the truffles and cocktails, the nuts and the caramels, and the fruits and fondue, I found unique flavors like gingerbread, maple mania, key lime limbo and classic cabernet. Trust me; just one bite will leave you craving more.
Even more unique about Ethel’s are their private parties. Guests can reserve the lounge and choose from four different party packages such as The Chocolate Tease, which offers warm-blended fondue, a choice of coffee, cocoa, tea or water, and a selection of fine chocolates, or the Chocolate Decadence package, which offers, dipped strawberries, fondue, specialty beverages, chocolate bars, one specialty bagged item, and a 48 piece chocolate collection.
The best thing of all is you get 2 complimentary pieces of chocolates with any order of beverage. They don’t serve alcohol so the drink selections are coffee, tea, smoothies and colas. Wish my daughter were with me, as I found myself enjoying a berry/mango smoothie with a piece of apple pie chocolate and mojito chocolate.
You Ain’t Been to Chicago Unless You Had Some Deep Dish Pizza - Gino’s East was like any other pizza parlor, with cheap, red vinyl booths, complete with red and white checkered vinyl tablecloths. Hey, this is no place for one of those frou frou thin pizzas that I normally love so much. You gotta have deep dish, meaty, gooey, cheesy pizza at a place like this. Afterall, this is what Chicago is known for. When in Rome… I was telling myself. So, I ordered a Meaty Legend (every once in a while, a girl’s gotta have some meat). It seemed like ages before the pizza was brought out, maybe from my impatient anticipation, as the waitress clanked the pizza pan down on my table.
A self-proclaimed pizza snob, I personally prefer my pizza crust to be more like Mario Batalie’s: yeastly, crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside – as in his LA pizza joint, Mozza. But didn’t I say “when in Rome” earlier? Sorry, but this crust was too crumbly, like the texture of a scone. Oh well, it was still a good pizza. They can’t all be like Mario Batalie’s. He has really spoiled it for the rest, that Batalie!
All that dough and cheese made me sleepy and sluggish. I found myself catching a taxi home with the leftover pizza in a little box, smelling up the entire car. I felt like such a dork but I just couldn’t leave the half un-touched pie at Gino’s East even though I didn’t love it. (The result of decades of brainwashing from my parents of not wasting food).
Pancakes To Die For- On our last day there, my husband joined me for our last brunch before catching our flight home. When a friend made me promise to add Orange on Harrison on my Chicago “must do” list, at first I was a little hesitant as someone who isn’t huge on the idea of carbs for breakfast. Good thing I let go of my inhibitions. Orange is a fun and creative breakfast and lunch fare served in a loft-like space, with quirky décor such as artificial orange trees and orange crate light fixtures. They’re famous for their extensive menu of fresh-squeezed fruit juices from every fruit you can imagine.
The drink menu has a “build-it-yourself” concept that even make ordering fun. Once seated, guests fill out a little three-step card to create the ideal drink. First you chose a basic (orange, apple, grapefruit, pear, etc.), then you chose a mixer (grape, cantaloupe, pineapple, lemon, lime, or celery), and then an extra to top it all of (banana, kiwi, strawberry, ginger, or mango), all fresh-squeezed, made-to-order. This was by far the most yummy glass of juice I have ever had. My husband chose their organic house-blend coffee infused with orange peel extract.
Its food menu has the same whimsical fare: exotic flavored silver-dollar pancakes, frushi - afresh fruit plate that resembles sushi, and basil pesto-flecked "green eggs and ham." I ordered the pancake flight, Orange’s signature dish. Four piles of silver dollar pancakes served on one plate. Each square contains a pile of yummy silver-dollar pancakes in yummy flavors such as “apple martini” and “white Russian” pancakes. Trust me, they taste as delicious as they sound – and I’m not normally a big fan of pancakes.
The trip was fantastic for many obvious reasons listed above. It was good to get away from the daily grinds and go somewhere totally new for a few days. It brought out both the silly Rachael Ray tourist enthusiasm in me, as well as my Tony Bourdain foodie sense of curiosity and adventure. I came back a little poorer (from my shopping damage) but much richer in spirit and experience. Priceless!

mikel marketing to celebrate 9 years of success at the “to the nines” party
This November, Mikel Marketing will commemorate another award-winning year at a “To the Nines” themed party. Nine honorable hosts and nine media sponsors will be joined by an estimated 300 plus guests to help Mimi Dinh, president of Mikel Marketing, and her team, celebrate the firm’s ninth anniversary and all of the success that 2008 had to offer.
Mikel Marketing is an award-winning, full-service marketing and comprehensive special events management and production company. Services include marketing, public relations, promotion, event coordination, advertising, and graphic and Web design. Known for innovative thinking and creativity, Mikel Marketing places great importance on providing not only novel, but personalized service for clients—a rare quality, often hard to find in larger firms.
Mikel Marketing has come a long way in nine years due to Dinh’s passion to succeed. Much of Dinh’s success stems from her dedication to clients, tireless entrepreneurial spirit and her ability to quickly recognize and establish a niche within the industry by offering valuable services to high-end clients who place a heightened value on image, creativity, and concrete results. By establishing a group of clients who share similar target markets, Mikel Marketing enables them to cross promote, piggy-back on each other’s promotions, and participate in co-branding opportunities. Mikel’s roster of past and present clients includes Bliss Nail Spa, Green by Adeline, Mercedes Benz of Houston North, Stewart Cadillac, Sake Lounge & Restaurant, Rickshaw Far East Bistro, The Royalton at River Oaks, Commerce Towers, and Dermagenix Medical Spa, to name a few.
“It's important for us to define our target market carefully and go after those clients with whom we truly want to build a long-term relationship, instead of trying to be all things to all people," Dinh explains. “It is through understanding this niche so well that Mikel Marketing is able to satisfy their clients who demand nothing less than the best.”
As 2008 comes to an end, Dinh and her staff have a significant list of accomplishments to celebrate. Aside from the success Mikel Marketing has had with clients, the company has also earned many national and international awards. This year alone, 1) Mikel Marketing won the 2008Summit International Award in the “Green Marketing” category “For outstanding work in Marketing Strategy and Effectiveness” for their client Green by Adeline; 2) The 2008 Communicator’s Silver Award of Distinction also for their work with Green by Adeline; 3) Mikel Marketing was the Platinum Winner of the Hermes Creative Awards for a Design It Yourself Catalog; and 4) Dinh herself received the Savvy Sister Award from Houston Woman Magazine’s HER Awards, which recognizes eight individuals who influence and inspire those around them and, thereby, serve as an excellent role model as well as inspiration for others in the community.
Mikel Marketing will celebrate its ninth anniversary at a “fancy-smanshy,” private event early this November. To compliment the “To the Nines” theme, Dinh has aligned nine prominent Houstonians to host the chic gala in addition to nine media sponsors. Hosts include Chloe Dao, Faisal Amin, John Kuhl, Dr. Stephen Moore, Chau Nguyen, Gordon Quan, Yuki Rodgers, Stephanie Talafuse, and Mary E. Yoder. It will truly be an evening of glitz and glamour as guests will be dressed “To the Nines.”
Staying true to her mantra, “in order to do well, you ‘gotta’ do good,” Dinh has chosen to incorporate the party with a fundraiser for her favorite charity, ESCAPE Family Resource Center, whose mission is to prevent child abuse and educate parents. All guests will be asked for a $10 dollar donation at the door which will, along with the proceeds from the underwriters, benefit this organization. For more information about Mikel Marketing please visit www.mikelmarketing.com or call 713/807-1133.

42nd worldfest-houston sets fest dates
The 42nd Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival continues its totally dedicated Independent Film screening format for the upcoming April 16-25, 2009 unspooling. WorldFest will screen just 50-60 feature film premieres, with a total and absolute emphasis on the American and International Independent feature films and a continuing annual spotlight on award-winning short films and documentary films.
WorldFest Artistic and Program Director, Kathleen Haney, stated, “We are fiercely dedicated to the Indie Feature and Short Film and look for a quality selection of individual films to maintain a smaller, yet effective program rather than an overly large and unwieldy slate of 150-300 films. Haney continued, “For the 2009 WorldFest we are using ‘A good story, well told’ as our time-tested approach to film selection”. (For complete winner info from the past 2008 WorldFest, go to – http://www.worldfest.org – click on View the 2008 Remi Winners).
After he received the Grand Remi Award in 1985, Ridley Scott commented “WorldFest is in the business of validating excellence!” The mission of WorldFest is to recognize and validate creative excellence in film & video production in every facet and category of filmmaking. Many filmmakers report that a Remi Award from WorldFest opens doors to advance their careers.
WorldFest will continue with its annual Short Film Showcase, a special review of 100 new short and student films...from the festival that gave first top honors to Spielberg, Lucas, The Coen Brothers, Ridley Scott, Robert Rodriguez, Spike Lee, Gavin Hood, John Lee Hancock, Michael Cimino, Steven Poster, Oliver Stone, Ang Lee, Atom Egoyan and David Lynch, among many others! Few other festivals have such a “discovery” track record. WorldFest has emerged as the oldest continuous film festival management in the world with the same executive director, serving for 41 consecutive years. A few other festivals are older, but they have had as many as ten different directors.
WorldFest began in August 1961, as Cinema Arts, an International Film Society. It began screening Independent, foreign & art films. It became an officially competitive International Film Festival Seven years later, in April 1968, and has been in continuous operation since. It is one of the original three film festivals in North America, with San Francisco and New York as the first two events. Following WorldFest was Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, and Seattle. Then Sundance and SXSW, Toronto and Tribeca. Now there are more than 1,000 USA film festivals of various types, levels and quality, most being simply non-competitive screening events! WorldFest is international, competitive and invites filmmakers worldwide.
The 42nd Annual WorldFest offers International Competition in; Features, Shorts, TV production, TV commercials, unproduced Screenplays & Teleplays, Experimental, Student, Documentary, Business & Industry, New Media, and Music Videos. WorldFest is the largest film & video competition in the world, in sheer number of actual category entries, with more than 4,500 category entries received in 2008. There are almost 200 sub-categories for competition, allowing each film to compete in its own individual genre.
WorldFest-Houston is sponsored by the State of Texas , the City of Houston , HP, Kodak, NASA, AMC Theaters, the Houston Film Commission, Boxer Properties, Pillar Bluff Winery, Wagner Media, The Renaissance Hotel, The Houston Chronicle, and the Houston Arts Alliance.
