Yuki Rogers
a beautiful person inside out

Today's givers are not satisfied with just writing checks; they are making sure their donations generate the right social returns.  Generosity is fashionable again, where the socially-conscious and the wealthy donate their money and time in unprecedented amounts to address major social problems. The majority of the new wave of philanthropists is characterized by their determination to be deeply involved in the causes they choose to support, rather than just writing a check.  Yuki Rogers is a prefect example of this.

Her name is synonymous with volunteerism.   Yuki Rogers is a beautiful person - inside out.  Not only she's a knock-out (voted by H Texas magazine as Houston's 25 Most Beautiful People ), she also has a big heart.  Yuki is so well-known in the community that everybody knows her on a first name basis.  She became interested in volunteering and was active in many organizations working for improvement in education, promotion of art & culture, and peace. She doesn't just sit on the board of many organizations ( Asian Chamber of Commerce, Asia Society, Japanese Association of Greater Houston, Asian American Family Service , to name a few); she actually gets involved in the planning and execution of many fund-raisers, seeing it through from beginning to end.   Yuki was born and raised in Japan, and considers herself Japanese, although her mother is part Russian.  Yuki went to college in San Diego, California, and came to Houston in 2000 as a result of her late husband's work transfer.  Although Yuki travels often, she considers Houston home because of her fulfilled personal life here, enriched with friends and meaningful community work.  In 2005, Yuki was selected as a recipient of Houston City Volunteer Award.

A typical day in the life of Yuki involves attending committee board meetings, grabbing lunch to catch up with friends, and going to galas in the evenings, where she's either honoree or event chair.  When she comes home at night, she can be found at her computer replying emails, typing up meeting agendas or planning upcoming events.   A self-professed night owl, Yuki goes to bed way past midnight, exhausted but content.   She wouldn't have it any other way.  According to Yuki, “everyday is a blessing; everyday is a good day for me.”  Yuki Rogers can be reached at yrogers@yahoo.com.

1. You are so actively involved in the community. Which organization is closet to your heart and why?

It is hard to pick just one organization close to my heart. I have such fun and great relationships with many of the organizations and people I deal with. However, I am Asian so I love to promote our Asian culture and work with the Asian charities.

2. What is the most rewarding thing about volunteer work?

Ever since I moved to Houston, I have met so many positive, fantastic people who lifted my spirit up. Meeting nice people and helping their organizations grow is a rewarding experience. When they tell me that their gala was a success and they hit their financial goals, it makes my day.

3. What is the most challenging thing about being involved in so many activities?

You always think of how you can help others and tend to care about yourself last. My new year resolution is to be little bit more selfish about my own time and start doing more for myself.

4. If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

Now, I don't want to sound like Mother Teresa here, but if God would grant me one wish for this world, I will take out the word and action called “Violence”.

5. You seem very fashionable. What is your style?

I like any clothing that fits snuggly to my body. My girlfriends call me a “clothes psychic”. When I go shopping, I can hear some clothes scream out my name and ask me to take them home. It sounds weird but that is how I pick my clothes and I am almost always a happy customer. I don't stick with specific brands.

6. Of all the places you have traveled to, where is your favorite and why?

I have been to over 20 different countries, but it is hard to say which one is my favorite. There are always great memories about each country. I enjoy mingling and talking to the people from all over the world. My late mother was like a city ambassador to my hometown and through her actions, she taught me how to be fair and respectful to other cultures. When I travel, I always look forward to talk eye to eye to the local people, try their food and understand their tradition, customs.

7. What are your future plans?

My future is open and flexible. I do not have any personal agendas at this time, though I would love to do more traveling this year. Also, it has been over seven years since my husband passed away from a tragic accident, so someday I would love to find a loving, caring relationship. More than anything I am so grateful that God gave me this beautiful life and thank you to Mikel Marketing for this opportunity to speak about my personal life.

To-die-for pizza
Written by: Duke Au
Photos by: Duke Au

When two discriminating gourmands, Tri & Mimi Dinh , flying in from Houston for a weekend of serious culinary indulgence in Los Angeles , we naturally ensconced them to the most coveted table in all of North America. At any given time of day, it seems just about every foodie worthy of his/her salt would invade Pizzeria Mozza like pilgrims flock to Mecca. The small, modern and intimate local haunt is located smack in the middle of posh Melrose side of LA. This latest collaborative effort between Italian uber chef Mario Batali and baking wunderkind Nancy Silverton sets a radical new precedence in restaurant universe everywhere: to always provide consistently premium ingredients at reasonable prices and to treat each patron like royalty. What an outlandish concept!

The moment we slipped through the imposing Tuscany wooden door, we had entered a quaint trattoria somewhere downtown Florence . The Place at once suffused warmth and lively atmosphere that was accentuated with alluring aromas of fresh herbs and bread. Contemporary bossa nova and jazz music swayed the crowd to a steady rhythm of merriment. Deep red color wall and varnished wood panels added a cozy feel to the small place. The bustling open kitchen behind a long granite lunch counter that featured a large wood burning oven provided thrilling entertainment.

To start, we immediately placed order for two pizzas: a fennel sausage and an Oregano Salame that included hot chili and mozzarella. While waiting for the ethereal pies to be fired up inside a large, open wood burning oven, we jammed the table with assortment of antipasti. The mussels al forno with Calabrian sauce ($12) came out hot and steamy in a medium size bowl. Its succulent aroma at once induced saliva to drool and we responded like mad dogs chasing after a meat truck. Whatever juice remained we soaked it with crunchy crostini bread.

Up next, bone marrow al forno ($12) came out along with chicken livers, capers, parsley & guanciale ($8). Like magic, these items disappeared faster than the waiter could clear the plates. Unlike its cousin duck liver pate, these spreads served on crunchy crostini were rather thick and coarse with firm texture and a mild flavor that hinted something akin to Chianti.

Still not enough, the tour de force of gastronomic exploration continued with Silverton's fame farmer market fresh Tricolore with Parmigiano Reggiano & anchovy dressing ($14), plus baby peppers with tuna ($12), and Saturday special lamb stracotto ($20). Even at the best epicurean grocer, we could never find such garden fresh endive and lettuce like this. A slight trace of anchovy in a perfectly balanced dressing made the satisfying salad a dish onto itself. By now, everything had been spot-on and exceeded all expectations till we tasted the fork tender braised lamb in light tomato sauce. A mere bite into its profoundly flavorful chunk and the whole mantra of Pizzeria Mozza condensed to this: food here was cooked with lots of love by mom. The figurative 'mom' is Nancy Silverton. Her uncompromising standard for the aesthetic and purity was on display in full force.

We learned from the waiter that the dough required 3 days to prepare and properly ferment. The miraculous result was nothing short of absolute divinity. First of all, the blistered bubbles and smoky flavor from the almond woods used in the open brick oven made the crust both chewy tender and crackling crisp at the same time. Deconstructed to its bare essence, the pizza contained only a thin layer of cheese and salami and few specks of dried oregano and splashes of nutty olive oil. Nothing extraneous to distract its sensual simplicity, and that core Zen approach to making gourmet pizza and everything else on the menu the sole reason why millions cult-like followers would retrace their footstep to this delicious Mecca time and again.

unveiling commerce towers – greener on all sides

The view from atop Downtown Houston's high-rises is getting a beautiful and eco-friendly makeover. People debating on moving to downtown can now see the city through green-tinted glasses. Commerce Towers is changing this misconception of the “concrete jungle” with green initiatives transforming the downtown landscape. People are realizing that the grass can be greener on all sides.

As the demand for greener lifestyle options increases, cities across the country have begun to develop programs that not only enhance biodiversity, but also visual appeal. The Houston Downtown Management District's recently launched Vertical Gardens Matching Grant Initiative is intended to support landscaping on building walls, parking garages and sidewalks in downtown; improving not only the overall look, but also air quality and insulation.

According to projections by Woods & Poole Economics , the Greater Houston region is expected to grow substantially within the next 20 years, adding an estimated 2.66 million people. An increase in Houston's size and population will amplify the need for additional green spaces in order to combat greater levels of pollution.

While the Vertical Gardens project serves as a stepping stone, several buildings in downtown are taking their own initiative to lessen environmental impact. Commerce Towers is the only high-rise in Houston with its own Nicklaus design putting green on its rooftop pool terrace, which cuts down energy costs by absorbing sunlight that would otherwise heat the building directly. Hines Interests is also planning to add green space to the roof of their new office building which can be seen from Commerce Towers.

“There is no program in Houston for putting greenery on the tops of buildings. We are all doing that on our own as responsible corporate citizens,” said Patrick Frese, Executive Vice President of Commerce Towers. “I think people would be surprised at how much greenery we have on our rooftop and at how many other buildings nearby are adding rooftop gardens as well.”
A green roof isn't the only isn't the only eco-friendly element of Commerce Towers as its convenient downtown location provides residents with greener lifestyle options as well. Urban architects argue that high density populations create the need for greener and more efficient public services and mass transit systems. In addition to luxury onsite amenities and close proximity to major city landmarks, businesses, entertainment venues and restaurants, residents of Commerce Towers also enjoy easy access to the METRO rail and downtown tunnel.

Commerce Towers also offers residents a bird's eye view of Downtown Houston's urban face-lift, which has included the renovation of Main Street Square , Bayou Place , Minute Maid Park and more recently, the Houston Pavilions and Discovery Green Park. The Houston Pavilions , scheduled to open in the fall of 2008, will transform four city blocks into a distinguished center for business, retail and entertainment in downtown. Discovery Green Park , a recreational area opening March 2008, will feature lush gardens and promenades, and facilities to hold community festivals and performances.
Designed by legendary Houston architect, Jesse H. Jones, the Commerce Building has been a prominent component of Houston's downtown skyline since 1928. Today, the rehabbed and renovated Commerce Towers offers an elegant alternative to downtown high-rise living. With over 50 unique floor plans ranging between $400,000 and $2.1 million, their sophisticated, spacious and fully finished condominiums provide a stable foundation unparalleled by most homes.

As Houston continues to “go green,” Commerce Towers stands out as not only downtown's choice residential, luxury location, but also as an integral part of Houston's past and greener-looking future. Marketed by Tarantino Properties and a project of Premiere Living, the Commerce Towers is located at 914 Main Street . For more information, visit www.CommerceTowers.com

go green, wear green

Whether it's fashion-forward, eco-chic or conscious clothing, one thing is certain: Green apparel is hot . Bo Breda, academic director for fashion design at The Art Institute of California, San Francisco , agrees: "Green clothing will be more and more a part of ordinary life choices for everyone. Each process, each material used is being looked at with new eyes."

Organic cotton debuted first--and remains the biggest seller. Organic Exchange expects the organic cotton industry to hit sales of $2.6 billion in 2008. A 2006 Organic Trade Association survey pointed out that "organic nonfoods are still emerging as a category"--which means lots of fresh opportunity. "Developments in fiber science have been explosive lately," adds Breda , so clothing designers are increasingly looking to other natural fibers like bamboo, soy and corn . While fabrics become more accessible, brands are becoming more aware of their environmental impact. Big names like H&M, Nike and Target now carry green apparel lines, but there's still room for entrepreneurs, too.

One entrepreneur reaping the green harvest is Callie Smith , 26, who launched Envi , a Boston boutique that carries only green apparel and accessories, in 2006. Though starting Envi required more research than a conventional boutique and meant limited green designers and apparel lines, "today we turn them away," says Smith, projecting $500,000 in 2007 sales.

As Ursula Stahl, the 26-year-old co-founder of Envi, points out, "It's unlimited--to the point where nongreen is going to be passé."

For information, please visit www.flyclear.com

All of us who have been on a plane know about how long you have to wait before you can board because of the annoyingly thorough check-ups you have to pass before you can go on your trip. But from now on you can leave all those controls behind thanks to the new Flyclear card . And it only costs $99.95 a year and the fee for TSA of $28. To get one, you have to go to a Clear center and present two official identification cards. Then you have to take a photo and give them your biometric information. They suggest that you should have a US passport , but foreign people are welcomed to. So now you can eliminate the stress from your plane trips, not worry about those hidden pierces and miss a lot less planes. The Flyclear has already been put into function but for very few airports like Orlando , San Jose and JFK and the service is not available all day long. But there are plans to expand this technology.

hot wine trends for 2008
Information taken from http://www.entrepreneur.com/hotcenter

Whether sealed with a cork or a screw cap, consumers can't get the tops off of wine bottles fast enough. Continuing its popularity, wine has gone mainstream and is being sipped, savored and outright guzzled at such a rate that by 2010, the U.S. could actually uproot France from its perennial seat as the world's largest wine consumer, according to the Wine Market Council. "The explosion of the culinary category and the employment of more effective marketing strategies have made the market fruitful and the opportunities ripe, says wine consultant Michael Green   <http://www.michaelgreen.com/> . And the rise in direct-to-consumer wine sales and online sales is also creating buzz. According to Deborah Brenner, author of Women of the Vine, "There are many opportunities for entrepreneurs to get involved by providing necessary tools for wineries, such as shipping and fulfillment centers, software tools, e-commerce tools, etc." Cameron Hughes founded San Francisco-based wine-trading company, Cameron Hughes Wine   <http://www.chwine.com/> , in 2001. By buying small lots of wine in bulk from high-end producers, eliminating middlemen, cutting his own costs (he doesn't own a single tank or barrel) and selling to Costco Wholesale Corp., Hughes, 36, has been able to stake his spot in the flourishing $10 to $15 bottle category and will grow sales to a projected $20 million by June 2008.
