Cristal Montanez Baylor
a passionate philanthropist

In an era of vastly increasing, yet disproportionately distributed wealth, poverty and inequity are two of the world's most complex challenges. Private philanthropists play an essential role to resolve these problems. Realizing the importance of this, Philanthropists have multiplied throughout the globe, dedicated to eliminating poverty and committed making a social impact by using their time, influence and resources to address some of the world's most significant problems.

Cristal Montanez Baylor,
Executive Director for Hashoo Foundation USA, started out as a volunteer 10 years ago and has never left . The most rewarding thing about this for Cristal is the opportunity to improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries and contribute to alleviate poverty through education and income-generating projects, which allows individuals to provide for themselves and their family independently.

No other role model is as great as your own mother, from whom Cristal Montanez Baylor gets her true dedication, passion, and talent and now is passing her humanitarian traits to her children. Cristal passionately believes in promoting her own kids' involvement in philanthropy and build a strong community of future social investors and philanthropists.

The Hashoo Foundation
, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support underprivileged communities in improving their social, economic, health and education status through a participatory development approach . T he main objectives of Hashoo Foundation USA are to mobilize financial and technical support for Child Education Support Program (CESP for out-of-school children) and Umeed-e-Noor Center of Excellence for education and therapy for children with special needs. In addition, they raise awareness and promote intercultural understanding and through the Youth Ambassador Program. The organization, registered with the Charities Commission in the United Kingdom , is expanding globally and is in the process of registering in Canada .

Who started Hashoo and how?
Hashoo Foundation embodies the tradition of service to humanity that has run in the Hashwani family for the last six generations. The original aim of the organization was to respond to the critical needs of Afghan refugees settled in Pakistan and to help young people from Chitral and the Northern Areas of Pakistan who had come to the city in search of better opportunities. Along with responding to the immediate needs of the displaced Afghan population through financial and medical assistance, Hashoo Foundation provided skills training through its Hotel Management Training Program and English language and computer courses. Today, c haired by Sarah Hashwani , Hashoo Foundation has evolved into a development NGO, striving to make a practical and sustainable difference in the lives of underprivileged communities by promoting initiatives that allow individuals to provide for themselves and their family independently. Drawing on this vision, Hashoo Foundation has initiated several programs in the following areas: Education, Skills Development, Poverty Alleviation and Health.

How did you become involved in Hashoo?
Sometimes, things are meant to be... My dear friend John Tsacrios, UNICEF Executive Director, invited me to the presentation of HOAP (now Hashoo Foundation). I was serving on the UNICEF board of directors and was very excited to accompany John to the event. There I met Sarah and Noorie Hashwani. I was so impressed by Sarah's passion and dedication to the programs that I wanted to learn more about it. John introduced me to Sarah and we shared some ideas. Long story short, in July 2006, I traveled with the first Youth Ambassador Team in Islamabad , Pakistan , lead by HF Pakistan officials. At the end of two intense weeks of work, I was excited about the incredible work HF was carrying forward and the way it empowered the people and the communities. It was then, when I felt the passion that stimulated me to move forward. I knew I was in the right place.

Can you share a story about Hashoo that touched you?
During my first visit to Umeed-e-Noor, HF Centre for Children with Special Needs, by providing provided boarding, lodging, therapy and education to more than 1,100 children. I met Iqra, a young girl with cerebral palsy. She had poor hand coordination, no postural control and was not able to feel herself. She was undergoing her daily therapy with the purpose of improving her motor skills, physical movement and language ability. I visited Iqra, last year and was happy to see how her capacity for physical movement has improved to such extent that now she can operate her wheel chair independently. She is able to hold a pencil and is learning to write. Her personality, as a result of her improvement, has undergone a tremendous change for the better.

What are some of the fun things you do when you are not volunteering?
I spent some of my free time working with an international team that creates awareness, and denounces violation of human rights and democracy by dictatorial regimes. I also love to travel, photography, designing my own clothes, and Tae Kwon Doe.

What are some of Hashoo Fiundation's plans?
In the US , HF USA plans to mobilize financial and technical resources to support its programs and continue empowering the underprivileged communities. We plan to continue promoting the Youth Ambassadors program which provides opportunities for young people from the US to volunteer their time and skills to contribute to the development of underprivileged communities. Hashoo Foundation USA is also committed to give back to the Houston Community by supporting local programs. We believe education is critical to social, economic empowerment and poverty alleviation . Hashoo Foundation supports Mayor Bill White 's “Expectation Graduation” program destined to “Reach Out to Drop Outs” and help them stay in school. HF Youth Ambassadors distributed teddy bears and blankets to runaway and homeless kids at Covenant House Texas .
What about your own future plans with Hashoo?
I plan to grow with the organization and dedicate my passion and efforts toward making Hashoo Foundation a leading, credible and recognize development NGO at the international level in the next five years.

about the beer can house

John Milkovich, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, started his project now known as the Beer Can House in 1968 when he began inlaying thousands of marbles, rocks, and metal pieces into concrete and redwood to form unique landscaping features. When the entire front and back yard were completely covered because he "got sick of mowing the grass", he turned to the house itself and began adding aluminum siding – aluminum beer can sidings, that is. Over the next 18 years the house disappeared under a cover of flattened beer cans for both practical and decorative reasons. Garlands made of cut beer cans hanging from the roof edges not only made the house sing in the wind, but also lowered the family's energy bills. Ripley's Believe It or Not estimated that over 50,000 cans adorn this monument to recycling.

John considered his work an enjoyable pastime rather than a work of art, but he did enjoy people's reaction to his creations. He once said, "It tickles me to watch people screech to a halt. They get embarrassed. Sometimes they drive around the block a couple of times. Later they come back with a car-load of friends..."

They get embarrassed. Sometimes they drive around the block a couple of times. Later they come back with a car-load of friends..."
The house and landscape are adorned with many different types of beer that John, himself, drank (though his neighbors and his wife, Mary, were always glad to lend a hand!). Did he prefer one brand to the next? His favorite beer was always "Whatever's on special".

Thorn Necklace

Frida Kahlo February 20, 2008 - May 18, 2008 Organized in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the artist's birth, Frida Kahlo is the first major Kahlo exhibition in the United States in nearly fifteen years. It presents over 40 of the artist's most important self-portraits, still lifes, and portraits from the beginning of her career in 1926 until her death in 1954. Rendered in vivid colors and realistic detail, Kahlo's jewel-like paintings are filled with complex symbolism, often relating to specific incidents in her life. In her iconic self-portraits the artist continually reinvented herself. Paintings like The Two Kahlos (1939) demonstrate her penchant for self-examination, and works like Henry Ford Hospital (1932) and The Broken Column (1944) express her struggles with illness throughout her life.

The exhibition includes loans from over 30 private and institutional collections in the United States , Mexico , France , and Japan , several of which have never been on public view in the United States . Frida Kahlo also features a selection of nearly 100 photographs of Kahlo and her husband, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, by preeminent international photographers of the period, such as Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Gisele Freund, Tina Modotti, and Nickolas Muray. Personal snapshots of the artist with family and friends, including such cultural and political luminaries as André Breton and Leon Trotsky, are also on view.

These photographs—several of which Kahlo inscribed with dedications, effaced with self-deprecating marks, or kissed, leaving a lipstick trace—pose fascinating questions about an artist who was both the consummate manufacturer of her own image and a captivating and willing photographic subject. On loan from the collection of designer and photographer Vicente Wolf, many of these photographs have never been published or exhibited. Major lenders to the exhibition also include the Museo Dolores Olmedo and the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection of Modern and Contemporary Mexican Art. Presenting an extraordinary combination of paintings and photographs, Frida Kahlo offers a unique perspective of one of the twentieth century's most important and revered artists.

the ultimate girls night out
By: Mimi Dinh
Photos: Dr. Connie Nguyen & Dr. Diane Do

Looking for the perfect recipe for an ultimate girl's night out? Well, ditch Rachael Ray's 30-minute standard for a more eclectic mix! May I suggest my favorite femme fatale concoction? Combine 1 part Bond Girl , 1 part Material Girl a tablespoon of Sex in the City and a dash of Coyote Ugly . Serve shaken in a frosty martini glass and garnish with a chocolate covered strawberry. It's the perfect gal-pal treat!

So, you ask, “Where do I find such exotic ingredients?” Well, right here in Houston!

When Debbie, my sister-at-heart and our Director of Special Events, told me she was getting married, of course, I decided to throw her a bachelorette party that she would never forget!

With Mikel's own soon-to-be bride as the superstar, 15 girl friends jumped onboard a San Tropez-style yacht, but Houston-style. Granted, Westheimer doesn't sparkle like the glistening coast, but the luxury and service onboard this limo-coach would delight even the most discerning frolickers of Southern France.  With the allure of a fireworks display, the “oohs” and “ahhs” was the only accessory worthy of the demure line of ladies that graciously waited to board the lux bus.  The interiors were adorned with mirrors, champagne glasses, plush leather seats, lacquered cabinets and flat screen get-up with on demand choices.  This ambiance immediately set the right tone for our evening and put us in a party mode instantly.  Tuxedo Charters , the muscles behind such luscious decadence, not only chauffeured us around town like Hollywood elite but made our experience the top priority.  Although they had everything ready for us (ice, soft drinks, bottled water, drink mixers), we all brought our own yummy treats to celebrate the occasion: champagne, vodka, chocolate covered strawberries, gourmet pizza, and other sweets.  I am telling you, “transit” isn't a just a word for METRO anymore… this vocab has been upgraded to Cosmo status. Camera flashes, super-model poses, overflowing bubbles and outbursts of giggles kicked the “pimp” right out of our fashionable ride, and, replaced it with a slight sweet essence of “diva.” With our event commemoration ceremony coming to a close, it was time to get back to the business of partying.

First stop, A+, the super-swanky cocktail lounge nestled inside the Alden Hotel . Gently modern with a warm spa-reminiscent décor, the space emits an ambiance that is the perfect compliment to the crowd of professionally chic and elegantly dressed. The scene, attempted by many, is not only accomplished by the Alden, but truly mastered. From the service, to the hors d'oeuvres, to the perfectly delicious martinis, the spot was understatedly hip, refined yet unpretentious.  The perfect place to start, we were still “poised,” as we enjoyed light bites and dainty sips from our cocktails. Soon our normal proper lady façade would eventually wax and wane, for we were just getting started…

Destination number two, Del Frisco . Known for an alluring atmosphere of classic sophistication, the space boasts a large wrap around bar, a cellar highlighting a selection of over 1,500 wines and the simple elegance of crisp white tablecloths. Located in the Galleria next to Oceanaire, the crowd flaunted a cultured, mature, composed and charismatic group of professionals.

Certainly not the after-hours home for Britney and K-Fed wannabes, Del Frisco is an impeccable locale to hang out and enjoy a relaxing conversation or, perhaps, meet someone new.  With a male majority inside, it is a perfect place for girl's night out… We even ran into some of our favorite hommes, Dr. Stephen Moore, John Kuhl, Santosh Varughese, Ron Marks, and Dean Cooper!  OK, so the boys were invading the playpen, but the girls didn't seem to mind… Why? Because after all, it's about the laughter, the story-telling and the opportunity to have a brief moment to unwind.
After another fab trip in our magical motor coach, we arrived at Zimm's , a friendly neighborhood bar with a consistently loyal crowd. It brings the “place where everyone knows your name” into the 21st century. Not affected by the normal industry standards of longevity, Zimm's is a staple in Houston nightlife.  Forever a happening watering hole, the staff is always friendly and the service is always excellent. Actually, the staff made us feel so comfortable, they got us doing shots and on the floor dancing in no time, even when no one else did. Our energy was unmatched that evening!

Nearing the end of our journey, we made our final stop at Zeppelin Video Lounge . With rock music, flat-screen TVs, a spacious veranda and a vibrant crowd on the dance floor it was just a great rock party!  There were pretty young things everywhere, from both genders.  To me, it's not as much about where you are but about whom you are with.  So it doesn't matter that this is not usually my scene, I was having so much fun witnessing a side of my friends I have never seen, although we have known each other for years.  There must be something in the air that brings out the sauvage in us. Although we had retired our cocktails by that time, we finished our girl's night with a bang, right in the middle of the dance floor, jamming.  It was priceless!
A little bonding. A little indulgence. A little sexiness. A little carefree. And, a lotta fun! What more could a girl want? Who said bachelorette parties need cheesy, oily bikini-clad men? Great places, great food, great drinks, great friends and a little bling (our ride) create awesome memories.

I believe that “a company that lets loose together stays together!” Come to think of it, for a bachelorette's party, it was pretty tame.  We let our hair down but not in an out-of-control kind of way.  I feel so privileged to share an all-female work environment that is mature, professional and maintains respect for the boundaries between work and play. It is that common belief, which allows us to be more than just co-workers, but also friends.

So, whoever your “girls” are, here's to your next night out! (champagne glasses clinking here).

unveiling the new commerce towers
there has never been a better time to live downtown.

Downtown Houston's high rise living just got a little more luxurious and exclusive. With recent additions to the renovated and rehabilitated landmark Commerce Building, the new Commerce Towers unveils an unparalleled lifestyle in the heart of Houston's most desirable urban residential district.

New Downtown Developments - With the second phase of urban renaissance underway, there has never been a better time to live downtown.    Discovery Green Park , open April 2008, will feature lush gardens and promenades, and facilities to hold community festivals and performances. The Houston Pavilions , scheduled to open in the fall of 2008, will transform four downtown blocks into a hub for business, retail and entertainment. Commerce Towers offers residents a bird's eye view of the renovation of Main Street Square , Bayou Place , and Minute Maid Park .

Living “Green” - The Houston Downtown Management District's Vertical Gardens Matching Grant Initiative is intended to support landscaping on building walls, parking garages and sidewalks in downtown; improving not only the overall look, but also air quality and insulation. Commerce Towers is the only high-rise in Houston with its own Nicklaus design putting green on its rooftop terrace, which cuts down energy costs by absorbing sunlight that would otherwise heat the building directly.  In addition to their green roof, Commerce Towers' convenient downtown location provides residents with greener lifestyle options. Residents can enjoy easy access to the METRO rail and downtown tunnel, and are walking distance from office buildings, the Theatre District, Minute Maid Park, and the Toyota Center. It's steps away from a light rail ride to the Medical Center, Museum District and Reliant Stadium.

About Commerce Towers - Commerce Towers offers more than 50 unique floor plans from the $400's to more than $2 million -- ranging in size from 1,395 to 3,800 square feet and up to 33,000 square feet for penthouses.  The units are crafted with hardwood floors, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, double vanities and showers, Jacuzzi tubs, and luxurious fixtures and finishes throughout. Penthouse residences can be custom designed and tailor-built ranging from one to three stories, including private rooftop gardens with sweeping views of downtown.
Commerce Towers' redesign incorporates two private residential lobbies, a fitness center, a private party facility with a full catering kitchen, a media room, and a conference room.  On the rooftop, residents can enjoy a heated swimming pool, jogging/walking track, and a putting green.

With amenities such as 24-hour concierge and valet, weekly car wash and bi-weekly dry cleaning service, Commerce Towers offers the ease of luxury hotel living at home. The valets will bring up groceries, packages and business materials.  The concierge can hire butlers, maids, caterers and more to meet residents' every need.

Celebrating Re-Grand Opening - Designed by legendary Houston architect, Jesse H. Jones , the Commerce Building has been a prominent component of Houston's downtown skyline since 1928. Today, the new Commerce Towers offers an elegant alternative to downtown high-rise living. In keeping with the building's historic beginnings, a “Roaring 20's”-themed soiree will mark the grand re-opening of Commerce Towers in late February. The invitation-only bash will call for flapper or Al Capone attire, and its exclusive list of attendees will celebrate big band music from the Maria Williams band, classic martinis, and a cigar and cognac lounge.

As Houston continues to redefine today's sophisticated urban lifestyle, Commerce Towers stands out as downtown's choice luxury residential address. Marketed by Tarantino Properties and a project of Premiere Living, the Commerce Towers is located at 914 Main Street . green apparel
Information taken from http://www.entrepreneur.com/hotcenter

Whether it's fashion-forward, eco-chic or conscious clothing, one thing is certain: Green apparel is hot. Bo Breda, academic director for fashion design at The Art Institute of California, San Francisco , agrees: "Green clothing will be more and more a part of ordinary life choices for everyone. Each process, each material used is being looked at with new eyes."

Organic cotton debuted first--and remains the biggest seller. Organic Exchange expects the organic cotton industry to hit sales of $2.6 billion in 2008. A 2006 Organic Trade Association survey pointed out that "organic nonfoods are still emerging as a category"--which means lots of fresh opportunity. "Developments in fiber science have been explosive lately," adds Breda , so clothing designers are increasingly looking to other natural fibers like bamboo, soy and corn. While fabrics become more accessible, brands are becoming more aware of their environmental impact. Big names like H&M, Nike and Target now carry green apparel lines, but there's still room for entrepreneurs, too.

cancer counseling, inc.

Cancer Counseling, Inc. (CCI) was founded in 1982 by Elise NeeDell Babcock. Through her personal experience with cancer she realized the need for professional emotional therapy. CCI remains the only not for profit agency in the Gulf Coast Area that provides free professional emotional therapy and education for cancer patients and families regardless of age, race, gender, religion or socio-economic status. CCI now serves in excess of 3,000 patients annually through free individual and group counseling and educational programs.

The mission of Cancer Counseling Inc. is to assist cancer patients, their families and friends in coping with the emotional effects of cancer on their lives through no-cost professional counseling and community education.

CCI addresses these needs by arranging free professional emotional therapy and education for all cancer patients and their families. Over forty individual practitioners that represent psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers provide six free individual sessions for each patient and/or family member in need. Their clinical staff serves Houston and surrounding areas including: Harris, Brazoria, Fort Bend , Galveston and Montgomery counties.  Each therapist has a minimum of ten years experience in the cancer care arena and operates from their private practice at a significantly reduced rate for our agency. This provides them the numerous locations for the price of one office.  The administrative office located near the medical center hosts approximately four groups weekly, in addition to providing space for individual sessions.

The In-Home Emotional Therapy Program has been in existence since August 2000.  Currently several of the practitioners perform the difficult task of making house calls at the homes of indigent and disabled cancer patients. Case management is specifically important to the In-Home Emotional Therapy Program that necessitates the assistance of various agencies, including legal assistance, CPS, APS, access to numerous social service organizations and help in navigating the managed care system.
