dr. tue dinh - a surgeon with passion and compassion
What could be better than the already super-fabulous you? A younger-looking, healthier and more confident super-fabulous you! And, this month's spotlight can make it happen! Dr. Tue Dinh , a board-certified reconstructive and plastic surgeon, practices his art form at the Methodist Hospital , located in the prestigious Texas medical center. With half of his business focused on reconstructive procedures and the other half on cosmetic procedures, Dr. Dinh finds his ability to make a difference in the lives of others the most rewarding aspect of his career. Specializing in Asian cosmetic surgery (Asian rhinoplasty, bleplaroplasty, laser treatment in darker-skin patients, liposuction, and breast augmentation),Dr. Dinh is also known for this brand new field of cosmetic surgery called vaginal/labial rejuvenation, since they are a natural derivation from his interest in reconstructive surgery. For reconstructive surgery, his interests include the coverage of difficult wounds of the torso / trunk areas. He has performed a significant number of perineal, vaginal, penile reconstructions after cancer resection or trauma. |
A Vietnamese-American surgeon, whose self-fulfilled success is from the happiness of his patients, enjoys his job with a passion and finds it extremely rewarding. Dr. Tue Dinh graduated from Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston , Texas . He trained in General Surgery at University of Texas at San Antonio and Plastic Surgery at Baylor; he also completed two fellowships : in Microsurgery and Aesthetic Surgery . Dr. Dinh is associated with the Institute for Reconstructive Surgery at the Methodist hospital and is on the teaching faculty of Weill-Cornell Medical College .
Inspired by his father and a former professor from UTMB, Dr. Dinh brings selflessness, work-ethic, a positive outlook integrity, education, humility and respect into the operating room everyday. Understanding the importance of giving back to the community, Dr. Dinh also provides pro-bono procedures such as breast reconstruction for cancer patients through Methodist Hospital's program to treat patients who can not afford to pay for needed procedures (elective cosmetic procedures are usually not included except in rare cases to treat deformities from injuries or birth defects).
The time may come when you may need a little nip and tuck. “Simply, know your motivations before you make any decisions about plastic surgery,” explains Dr. Dinh . The desire to satisfy someone else or to change something that you have very little control over (attempts to save your marriage if your spouse has a lover, etc.) are not healthy justifications in pursuing a cosmetic procedure. However, when the reasons are right, plastic surgery is an effective and powerful tool to improve your confidence, life and well-being.
 |
Unlike most plastic surgeons, you also do a lot of reconstructive surgeries. Which one do you enjoy more?
There are actually many plastic surgeons who perform reconstructive procedures; they are not as well known because the media and advertisement usually highlight those plastic surgeons who do cosmetic procedures. I enjoy both types of surgeries, because there are different challenges in each. Reconstructive procedures, in general, are more technically demanding and may require more thought in the preparation. Cosmetic procedures require an artistic eye and also communication skill (besides surgical skill), so that the surgeon and patient have the same idea of what constitutes a beautiful result. |
What is the most rewarding thing about your job? It sounds very cliché, but it is true. I think that in surgery and plastic surgery in particular, you can see the result almost immediately at the end of the procedure. The fact that you have an almost immediate confirmation of your effort gives you a feeling that you have done well. There are procedures that are unusual or difficult, and if I have done them well, I feel like I have made a difference.
Is there such a thing as too much plastic surgery and how do you talk someone out of it?
Of course there are people who wanted and have had too many plastic surgery procedures. Both average people and prominent “celebrities” can suffer from this problem. It is quite difficult to talk someone out of having one more procedure if his/her mind is already made up. I have handled these situations by pointing out to those patients that additional surgeries may not improve their looks, in fact, it may make them look worse. I also informed those patients that I do not believe I could achieve what they want. Occasionally I am successful in convincing them not to have more procedures, but I suspect that they may go “doctor-shopping” until they find someone who is willing to do what they want.
What are some important factors that a patient should look for when selecting the right plastic surgeon?
Unfortunately there are a lot of people who perform procedures they are not qualified to do. I believe that patients should do some research regarding the doctors they go to, especially for elective surgery. I still believe the best recommendation is by word of mouth from someone you trust. However, you still need to find out the background and training of the surgeon. Look for board certification in the field of surgery you want (for example, to be board-certified in Plastic Surgery, one must complete an accredited training program and pass two vigorous exams). This at least ensures that the doctor has met a minimum standard of competence. Then, you need to ask specific questions during your consultation with your doctor, such as how many of these procedures has he/she done? Is he allowed to do the same procedure in an accredited hospital, if your procedure is scheduled to be done in the office or a less expensive free-standing surgery center? (Accredited hospitals allow surgeons to perform only the procedures they are qualified to do; some unqualified doctors circumvent this requirement by operating in the privately-owned facility whose requirement is less stringent). Ask also about the risk of complications and how does he handle complications. In general, avoid those doctors who pressure you to make a quick decision or discourage you from seeking a second opinion.
With the advance of technology nowadays, does it lessen the danger that's associated with being under the knife?
It is much safer to undergo general anesthesia now (than 10 or 15 years ago) due to new monitoring equipments and new medications for anesthesia. Additionally, there are new, more sensitive tests before surgery to detect and correct any potential problems. High-risk patients should have their procedures in a hospital (versus in an independent surgery center), so all the equipments and specialists are available in case they are needed. All these new advances do not guarantee that no one will have problem, but it is much safer to undergo surgery at the present time.
What are some of the things that women can do as a maintenance program to delay them from having to be under the knife until much later in life, or sometimes avoid it altogether?
This area of plastic surgery, the so-called minimally-invasive or maintenance procedures, has been the fastest growing segment of elective cosmetic surgery. These procedures include Botox or fillers, the tightening of skin and treatment of age-related skin blemishes using light energy such as laser or intense light, some form of microdermabrasion, and slightly more invasive procedures such as the many different types of minimal facelifts (to treat minimal sagging) with much less recovery time than traditional surgery. Of course, these procedures are most effective when they are started early when the patient has not had significant changes due to age. They are designed to be repeated, and their result is much less dramatic and less lasting than traditional procedures, but they do work (to delay aging changes) if the patient is willing to follow the protocol. Additionally, there are many new maintenance skin lotions or “cosmeceuticals “, etc… that also help in keeping a youthful appearance of the skin. It is difficult to devise a protocol that will fit everyone. This is one circumstance that a thorough evaluation and discussion with a qualified plastic surgeon will be beneficial in order to individualize each treatment.
What do you do for fun during the little time you are off?
I have a three-year old son and a one-year old daughter, and I try to spend as much time with them as possible. My wife also works (a lot), and we try to arrange time to be together as a family. I also enjoy traveling, both for fun and for (hopefully) good causes. I recently went back to Vietnam to teach and perform volunteer surgeries at an indigent hospital. I do believe that helps me as much as those patients I did the surgeries – it keeps me grounded with the proper outlook. I also had a few days off for fun – I traveled to Cambodia and climbed the Angkor temples. That was also amazing.
Who is your role model?
I believe I have at least two role models and many more people who have positively influenced my life. The first role model is, of course, my father. He was a selfless doctor who worked very hard, always had a positive outlook, and thought of others before himself. He instilled in me the value of hard work, education, and integrity. But what impressed me the most (as I grow older) was his compassion and kindness toward his patients and his unwavering belief that acting with integrity will always be better in the long run despite any easy temptations. My second mentor is my former professor and chief (who operated on me when I was young). He was a giant in American plastic surgery – he was a former president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons – but he was always humble and treated everyone with respect. His dedication to his chosen profession and his love for teaching was inspiring; and he always found time to perform volunteer surgeries despite the fact that he was one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeons in the US during his time. He taught me not only about plastic surgery but also about life: he has said that he was not perfect – one of his deepest regrets was not spending enough time with his children while they were growing up. I hope that I will be able to learn from this lesson and actively participate in the growth of my young children.
What is (are) the most popular procedure(s) at your clinic?
The most common “nonsurgical” cosmetic procedures are Botox and filler injections and laser treatments. The most common cosmetic surgical procedures are abdominoplasty and liposuction.
What is the latest breakthrough in plastic surgery?
There are many new advances in plastic surgery. Some of them will need to be tested over time to prove their worthiness. I will just mention a few.
For cosmetic surgery , there are new lasers being developed to treat skin problems (such as wrinkles or blemishes or mild sagging) without burning the skin. There are new techniques to harvest fat for transplantation (and also new technique for liposuction). New fillers are being tested all the time along with new, minimally invasive surgeries to achieve good result (such as midface lift) without much recovery time. Body contouring (to restore normal-appearance after massive weight loss) has had major innovations. Two areas of the body that are becoming more popular for cosmetic procedures (at least in America) is the buttocks – for augmentation – and the vagina/labia area – for rejuvenation or reduction.
For reconstructive surgery , there are new flaps (tissue designed to be transferred from one part of the body to another) described. There are also advances in techniques of microsurgery (especially in breast reconstruction), and supermicrosurgery (extremely small surgery using very high-powered microscope).
Do you think Americans as a whole is obsessed with their looks more than the rest of the world?
I believe that Americans are more obsessed with plastic surgery now than 10 years ago. It is due to the popularity of all the TV shows about plastic surgery – it is more acceptable now to have plastic surgery and it is becoming more affordable. However, as a population becomes wealthier and has more disposable income, procedures to improve appearance gain in prominence. I even saw it in Vietnam , whose economy is expanding. However, I am not sure that Americans are the most obsessed about their look. This is just my opinion, but in some South American countries such as Argentina or Brazil , plastic surgery may even be more popular than in the US .
What are your future plans?
I hope that I will continue to be able to perform the types of surgery that I like. I am hoping to expand the Center for Genito-Urinary and Pelvic Reconstruction (that is where I perform a lot of my perineal/ vaginal/penile reconstruction) and the Asian Aesthetic Program. I am involved in teaching Plastic Surgery residents and a few ongoing research projects; I hope that some of these projects will be successful and improve the care of patient. Personally, I hope to reorganize my schedule so I could spend more time with my family and exercise more and start playing the piano or tennis again…. (one can always hope…)

alcohol may raise breast cancer risk
Even a drink or two a day of alcohol may raise the risk of the most common type of breast tumors -those fueled by the hormones estrogen and progesterone, according to one of the largest studies if its kind.
A second study shows that specific variations within two genes involved in metabolizing alcohol are associated with an increased risk for breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Some breast tumors are fueled by hormones, while others are not. In the first study, National Cancer Institute (NCI) researchers wanted to determine if the hormone status of a tumor influences the relationship between alcohol use and breast cancer risk.
The researchers reviewed data on 184,418 postmenopausal women , who answered questions about how much alcohol and what type of alcohol they drank each day. They were followed for an average of seven years.
Overall, moderate drinking raised the risk of developing breast cancer, regardless of whether a woman's preference was for beer, wine, or hard liquor. And the more she drank, the greater the risk.
But most of the increased risk was seen in women whose tumors were fueled by both estrogen and progesterone, says Jasmine Q. Lew, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Chicago who led the research.
Why would drinking raise the risk of hormone-fueled tumors? "Our hypothesis is that alcohol interferes with estrogen metabolism, which in turn increases the risk of hormone-sensitive breast cancer," Lew tells WebMD.

environment & fashion create harmony in new summer collection
Just above the smog of downtown Houston , a rainbow appears bringing environmental harmony to this Bayou city. Not of the traditional Skittles fashion, this rainbow is alternating shades of light green, blue, pink, ivory, black and white, all the colors for Green by Adeline's Spring/Summer 2008 collection . Aspiring treasure hunters and leprechauns alike can find the end of the rainbow (and the pot of “green) in a local shop that marries fashion and environment by way of both ready-to-wear and custom couture service. |
|
Located near the Galleria, Green by Adeline is a chic, eco-friendly boutique that will celebrate six months in business with a sexy, versatile new Summer collection. Creating eye-candy for fashionistas, environmentalists and any combination there-of, local designer Adeline Sung brings fashion down to Earth with bamboo fabric to create the “coolest” spring/summer collection . Bamboo, a notably breathable fabric, is consistently a winner in the battle against humidity and the rising thermometer. Adeline's new line stays continually fresh and free from embarrassing odor, all while being eco-friendly and fashion-conscious. How is that for multi-tasking? “My favorite pieces are a top vest and jacket. They can be easily accessorized to go from day to evening, casual to dressy,” explains Adeline about her new collection.
|
 |
The “living green” mentality, already embraced by many across the country is so much more than a fading consumer trend. It is a revolutionary movement to conserve the Earth, the non-renewable provider of life, beauty and diversity. Approached with caution by both fashion-lovers and novices, Green by Adeline is ready to relieve your anxiety about making the environmental fashion leap. Being eco-friendly does not confine you to a wardrobe inspired by the latest in potato sacks. With a family background in fashion, Adeline is native to Shanghai , studied in Paris and Milan and is inspired by designer Valentino, brings her exceptional designs to life in Houston 's first 100% eco-friendly boutique.
The term “eco-friendly material” has been misused and misunderstood. Many eco-fashion companies use only a small percentage of true eco-friendly material to save cost. After few washes, these blends will begin to fall apart or develop lent balls. Green by Adeline uses the highest grade of superior |
organic materials such as Modal and TENCEL, combined with excellent craftsmanship and design to produce clothing that has style and quality. You definitely get what you pay for! However, eco-fashion does not have to cost more. It's all about supply and demand. The more consumers demand “green” products, the more they will be produced, thus decreasing manufacture cost, making the supply more affordable. Five years ago, people were not as receptive to “green” products as they are today. It's the beginning of a revolution.
A role-model and teacher to other entrepreneurs embracing the “green” lifestyle, Green by Adeline has hosted many other eco-friendly in-store events, providing advice and insight for eco-fabrics and eco-fashion. Embraced with excitement by the media, this cutting-edge local designer has graced the pages of Tribeza, Luxury Houston, Bay Area Houston, Envy, 002, Houston Chronicle, Gloss, Health and Fitness, Houston Business Journal, RU Magazine, World Journal, Total Body and will be featured in the May issue of Skirt! Adeline, our city's head cheerleader for Team Earth, is helping to educate the general public to see, contribute and love the “big picture.”
So, with dull drapes and itchy potato sacks ruled out, what IS waiting for you at the end of the rainbow? Simply stylish, luxurious fashion with a conscious. Houston say “hello” to Green by Adeline , a little piece of Utopia conveniently located on 5136 Richmond , between Sage and Loop 610. For more info call 713/ 871.1888 or visit www.greenbyadeline.com .
“We all have a moral obligation to lead a green lifestyle,” concludes Adeline. Do your part to save the world. Go shopping today!

hot tip - on the up - smaller bags and clutches.
Accessories always help give any fashion ensemble the look of the moment. Try wearing a large statement necklace, a wide bangle cuff, or a new narrow skinny belt with your latest fashion purchases. Volume, or lack of it, can create new looks and new silhouettes. Consider for example the trend in bag shapes. Oversized bags have reached their peak. Volume is reducing in bags with smaller bags emerging as the bag shape trend. One way toward this has been the introduction of the clutch shape with both large and small clutches in store.
Any clutch bag , large or small is fashionable, but the clutch shape heralds the way to the purchase of other smaller bags. Frankly anyone who has owned an oversize bag knows all too well how possessions gravitate toward it. |
|
Experts suggest that a bag AND its contents should weigh no more than 2lb if damage to shoulders and back are to be prevented. Read more about clutch bags in wardrobe tips.
If you are using accessories only to update your fashion image, then add to either the clutch or smaller handbag add some Gladiator sandals, or wooden cone heel peep-toed shoes . Wedge shoes, espadrilles and ankle strap style shoes will all add that 2008 spring summer edge. Narrow skinny belts will add the latest belt trend shape to your outfit.

Ignorance may be bliss, but if you have a cell phone, it may no longer be an excuse to indulge in unhealthy eating, at least not at chain restaurants.
Last week, Diet.com launched Nutrition on the Go, a text-messaging service that lets you check out the calories, carbs and fat of common items at 1700 places .
Send a text message to 34381 with the name of the restaurant and the item you plan to order.
The results can be shocking: A tuna sandwich on honey wheat bread at Panera has 720 calories, 43 grams fat and 50 grams carbohydrates.
The system has some bugs. Type in “Starbucks tall latte,” for instance, and you get the results for a syrup-flavored latte with soy milk.

miami fashion week 2008
By: Mimi Dinh
For me, Miami means many things… fashion, sun, fun, global and glamour (to name a few)! A Mecca for travelers around the globe, there is always something playful and exotic in the air. One breath puts you in the mood to unwind, no matter how stressed you might be before you arrive.
|
|
After checking into the luxurious Palms South Beach hotel, I was immediately welcomed with a tray of tropical fruits, mixed nuts and cheese, sent to my room by Heather Zaitz , Director of Communications. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and a palette of white sand and sea, the room flaunted summer style meets and spa-like comfort to create the perfect relaxation candy. Not just any posh hotel, but a paradise on earth, with the glittering ocean, hammocks hanging from bristling palms and the aura of the most laid back, tropical setting almost made me forget our Miami mission… Fashion Week !
|
With an average of 10,000 attendees, Miami Fashion Week was a showcase for Latin fashion, beauty, music, art and culture joined by a crossover of international style with designers, entertainers and celebrities from around the world. This year being their 10th anniversary, I knew we were in for the best Miami Fashion Week yet.
|
|
 |
Although not as star-studded as New York FW, there is something alluring about being a part of discovering new talents at Miami FW. Similar to its New York counter-part in a red carpet entrance and the flashing bulbs of photo-ops against logo walls, Miami kicks it up a notch with the breezy, perfect weather, ideal to have a lounge outside in sofas and chaises surrounding the famed colored carpet. With vendor booths all around, guests were in for a sneak-peak shopping treat while waiting for the shows to begin. |
| Enjoying the city solo for the first night, I stepped out of the comfort zone and met some of the most interesting people on my first Fashion Week night. With folks striking up conversations left and right, I felt empowered by an internal vibe of positive energy that encouraged the hospitality of others. It seemed as though I was among a group of long-time friends from the first minute.
|
Miami Fashion Week , held for 2 consecutive years in the Wynwood Art District , a big artsy warehouse space perfectly suited for this type of event. Upon meeting the owner of the warehouse, I was introduced to Miami's Director of the Film & Cultural Affairs, who then introduced me to a charming, power couple of Miami property owners. Feeling right at home, the lovely Chanel-clad wife and I talked about the new Vietnamese restaurant that they were planning to open in the Wynwood district, described as “old world, elegant, French colonial style”. Can't wait. Minutes later, I cheered as my new friends took the podium to welcome Miami FW, introduced by Miami Fashion Week producer Beth Sol .
|
|
I was even taken back stage prior to show time, and was surprised to find how down to earth the models were as we chatted away. After the shows, I mingled and met some more nice people from Singapore and Dubai, including the Director of Dubai Studio City, with whom I shared an entertaining chat about “Bollywood” in Dubai.
Never too far from my H-town roots, I was delighted that Houston's own local hair care phenomena, Farouk Systems , the famed makers of CHI (Ceramic Flat Iron) products, sponsored this year's Miami fashion frenzy. Farouk Shami , the Billion-Dollar-Hairdresser and the King of Color, has built an empire that is in over 92 countries. As a major sponsor for Miami Fashion Week 2008, what better way to impact the industry than to partner up with one of the largest International fashion events in the US?
 |
The day after I touched down in the tropic metropolis of Miami, my friends joined the party. Feeling like stars of Sex in the City , we were ushered onto Press VIP seats and enjoyed the Dominican Republic Showcase ( Robert Flores, Santiago Paulino, Luis Menieur, Xiomara Almanzar ) and the Justine Davis for DavisEyes Fashion Show in star-studded style.
Next stop was sushi! Described by the Washington Post as “Heaven on Earth,” the Blue Sea restaurant of Delano hotel offers extensive and innovative selection of fresh seafood, caviar and sushi.
|
This place is a staple everytime we visit Miami, for its long communal table surrounded by high stools, where we can spontaneously drop by anytime we want a quick bite between our outings. Onward bound, we walked out to Delano's Water Salon & Orchard Bar for some cocktails, and then off to the official FW after-party at The Mansion . Press passes in hand, we bypassed the line, skipped the cover and jammed to Miami's most visited night club.
 |
Guided by friends we met at the Delano bar earlier in the evening, we left The Mansion for a more sophisticated scene. Mynt Lounge , described as the spot where hip Miami scenesters hang, reminded me of Le

Plaza Athenee lounge and Hotel Costes bar in Paris, all exude an old world glam with the very latest in hi-tech bar couture. Small and cozy, but big in ambiance, Mynt is a “cool watering hole for the social elite, designed as a quality establishment reminiscent of the roaring '20s," as described on their website.

Before we knew it, it was day number three. After shopping in Lincoln's outdoor mall , lunch at Caffe Milano , a great Italian patio restaurant on Ocean Drive and a stroll, my love for this infamous street was refreshed as I enjoyed just “watching the action”. After a leisured 3-hour lunch, we returned to our hotel and barely had time to rest, when we were off again to FW. More fashion shows to go to? Such a drag, but someone had to do it! The Colombia Showcase (Top Student Designers from Universidad Autonoma del Caribe plus designers Elsa de Jesus Cohen, Marcelo |

Hernan Garcia, Pili Mirani, Jeronima Polacios ), the Eveningwear Showcase : (Pelli Cha (Brazil/USA) / Rykii de Jude (Barbados) / Elizabeth Muir (USA/Afghanistan) / Cecilia Perez Alta Costura (Colombia) and the Mocali Showcase (Designers from Castilla y Leon Spain ) rounded out a decedent line-up of fabulous eye candy for the day.

We headed to the Delano's Florida Room again for a light dinner - lobster burgers and chocolate mouse - surrounded by the open breeze. Our friends decided to go to the FW after-party at Opium , but some of us stayed at the Delano's Water Salon & Orchard Bar . Familiar and appealing, this gorgeous Delano bar just keeps us coming back for more! And there is no doubt, this Philippe Starck designed, casually chic hotel resort IS Miami at its best. It defines Miami's sophistication, sexiness and international feel. We just couldn't get enough of it. After closing it down, we walked to the beach, laughed, told stories, and had so much fun that we were surprised to see daylight was quickly approaching. |
| After we returned to our hotel, we realized that had we stayed just half an hour longer we could have watched the sunrise on the beach, one of the must-do things on my Miami list. Oh well, maybe next time…. |
Saturday was everybody's last night in Miami, so our guide took us to “the best Vietnamese” restaurant, Green Papaya, in Miami Lakes. We had papaya salad, spring rolls and big bowls of “pho” noodles. Exactly what our taste buds were asking for! We decided to skip out on the Fashion Week festivities to check out some other happening parties instead. Remember the charming couple I was telling you about earlier? They invited us to the VIP opening party for ArtWalk at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Arts) in North Miami. Our first time at MOCA, I was glad to finally have had a chance visit. The exhibits were so cool and the guests were eclectic: from artists to art lovers, from art students to serious collectors… Mojitos were served, made fresh and delicious.

 |
Muti-taskers at heart, we had another event on our agenda, so off we went! Arriving at the ultra glamour Gansevoort South hotel for GenArt 's fashion show & after-party, we were boasting the most sought-after tickets in town in VIP style. Beautiful fails to describe this hotel rooftop oasis, “Plunge” Bar & Lounge .18 stories above the ocean, this tropical playground complete with |
|
a 110-foot long swimming pool and 26,000 Sq. Ft. of palm-tree speckled Brazilian Ipe deck, crisp white canopy beds, cabanas, chaises and breathtaking ocean views. As the brand new “it” hotel located on Miami Beach, the “it” party was attended by beautiful and fashionable people of Miami. Its gracious host, Alain Ricci , Director of Operations for the hotel, told me super model Giselle recently hosted a shindig there.
 |
After the unbelievably happening scene at Gansevoort , we switched gears to an unwind mode. A more low key scene at the Setai hotel , one of my favorite spots in Miami, sipping cocktails against exotic and beautiful Balinese decors. Enjoying their courtyard lounge surrounded by soft waterfalls and Zen music, it was chill time! Simply a perfect ending to our whirlwind of action-packed evening. |
Sunday, we had brunch of ‘dim sum' at Miss Yip Chinese Café, located on Meridian Ave. in the heart of Lincoln outdoor mall. Then, it was “back to reality time!” After my friends departed for Houston, I stayed for the awards Fashion Week final night, an event that I have always wanted to check out but could never do before. Each year, Miami FW award one overall winner and this was definitely FW's best night. Final night event showcased past award winners, each showing their latest collection. I held my breath as each exquisite outfit graced the runway! Every design was creative, unique and gorgeous. Perhaps, next year they should move this up to Saturday. What a shame that my crew had already headed home for work when Miami FW's best night was clearly their Sunday awards night.
As I sat there enjoying the shows solo, I finally had time to think back to the past few whirlwind days. With a jam packed itinerary the entire time we were there, I was surprised to find myself full of energy. Must have been due to my daily morning jogs, between 2 to 3 laps - 1 ½ mile each lap, on the boardwalk track deck along the hotel strip. Whenever I travel, I usually do my work out in the hotel gym. But with perfect weather upon gorgeous beach, I found my routine of morning jogs followed by a few laps in the pool among my favorite activities in Miami, feeling energized afterwards, ready for (almost) anything.
Both diva and novice-friendly, Miami Fashion Week is a must for all fashion lovers. So, if you didn't make it this year, grab your personal Lipstick Jungle crew and get ready for 2009! You know, we wouldn't miss it for the world… Who else mixes fashion, spice, sun and fun into the perfect wardrobe for the season? |

| home color trends: spring/summer 2008
Color trends for the home generally mimic what is being featured on fashion runways . The colors for spring/summer 2008, as reported thus far, should include a fun mix of washed colors, pastels, bright colors, and neutrals. Colors like with names like "cantaloupe" are a great example.
One will still be seeing reds and assorted blues. A variety of yellows continue to be a staple of spring and summer. Green is of course a color that must be represented, as so many things outdoors begin to take on various hues of this lively color. Green is also apparently popular, as a reminder to "go green" as much as possible.
Look for eco-friendly products before starting your home improvement projects, as there are several varieties for various needs, including more friendly formulas of paint.
Gray seems to be one of the more popular neutrals, along with tan. Tan with blue, or gray with blue, will be making appearances. White or various shades of it, always work in spring and summer, giving a fresh, crisp, clean feel to everything and creating a great backdrop for the more vibrant colors. White pairs well with pastels too, creating a soft look.
Even if you don't intend to redecorate your entire home to keep up with every trend that comes along (and most people don't), you can add some fresh new color to one or more spaces in your home easily and affordably, by adding just a few touches. A new accent rug, a few accessories, plants or flowers, hand towels, place mats and many more items... each one is an opportunity to inject fresh color without remaking an entire room.

At these eco-friendly outlets, being green never looked so good
Eco-fashion, like most design categories with the prefix “eco,” has morphed from a Birkenstock-and-gunnysack aesthetic to embrace sleeker and more stylish looks. Designers have no standardized guidelines — there's no eco-fashion equivalent of the official “organic” certification. It can refer to clothing made with fibers from sustainable sources or using recycled materials, or a focus on fair trade. But no matter how you choose to “green” up your wardrobe, there's no beating the quality of this retail therapy. You're not only helping yourself, you're helping the world.
Tigard , Ore. (just outside Portland ): Think of Nau's store ( 7457 Bridgeport Road ) as a giant dressing room. The Portland-based brand encourages customers to order from in-store self-serve Web kiosks with incentives of free delivery and a 10 percent discount. Pushing sales in cyberspace is good for the bottom line — it means fewer |
operating expenses — as well as the environment. Smaller stores gobble up less energy and fewer materials. This kind of deep thinking infuses every phase of a Nau garment's life cycle. Each item is made from as much sustainable material as possible, and many can be composted or recycled after one too many mountain treks or Iyengar classes. nau.com
Lima and Paris : A young Frenchman, Aurelyen Conty, launched Misericordia (from a Latin word meaning “compassion”) in 2002 to provide decent jobs for Peruvian workers. Designers who got wind of his mission offered to collaborate, and today Misericordia's retro sportswear is sold in très trendy Parisian boutiques like Colette (213 rue Saint-Honoré) and Lieu Commun (5 rue des Filles du Calvaire). Meanwhile, the company's nerve center in Peru has moved from a dusty shantytown to the nation's capital. The workshop is open to visitors, but you should call for an appointment (Mariscal Las Heras 658, 511.265.21.01). misionmisericordia.com
Dublin : The owners of posh department store Brown Thomas believe customers would rather go naked than wear fur. Its stores in Dublin , Cork , Limerick, and Galway now sell only the synthetic kind. The flagship in Dublin ( 88–95 Grafton St. ) was under increasing pressure from animal rights protesters — not surprising in a country that has hatched its fair share of pioneering eco-designers. The move placed this Bergdorf 's of the Emerald Isle on the same side of the ethical line with other fur-free British retailers like Harvey Nichols, Topshop, and Marks & Spencer, and fashion designers including Stella McCartney. brownthomas.com
New York : Quick, what kind of business would be least likely to inhabit a former butcher shop? Cruelty-free shoe seller, you say? You got it. No cows, alligators, or snakes were harmed in the making of the open-toed pumps, men's loafers, and crescent-shaped hobo bags sold at MooShoes, a shoe and accessories store opened in 2001 by sisters Erica and Sara Kubersky. The duo's merchandise is made with a polyurethane synthetic microfiber that moves and breathes just like leather. Their business has been so successful that it has outgrown two locations. The former butcher shop is no more; now MooShoes grazes in a much more apropos pasture: 78 Orchard St. , in Lower Manhattan . mooshoes.com
Houston : At Green by Adeline ( 5136 Richmond Ave. ) designer Adeline Sung custom-designs ballgowns made from allnatural materials like bamboo, organic cotton, soy, hemp, and wood pulp. Sung has been around fashion her whole life — her father was a garment designer for the Chinese government and her mother a seamstress who taught clothing design. Later Sung studied fashion design at the Paris Fashion Institute and Istituto di Moda Burgo in Milan , Italy . Clients in Asia and Houston have been wearing her couture fashions for more than 20 years. Who better to bring eco-friendly fashion to traditionally minded Houston ? greenbyadeline.com
London : In 2005 Londoner Penny Cooke opted to fill a void in the city's shopping scene. Equa, in trendy Islington, was London 's first Fairtrade-certified, all eco-friendly boutique. Pass beneath the cheery blue façade at 28 Camden Passage and into the calm beige interior stocked with beautifully designed selections from Britain 's premier eco-friendly designers. There are Debbi Little party dresses made from 1950s parachute silk, luxurious alpaca sweaters from Ciel, and hemp/Tencel frocks from Enamore — the brand known for its frilly knicker-cami combos made from “peace” silk (made without harm to the silkworm). equaclothing.com

new eco-getaways are recommended

Outside magazine's March issue recommends several places in the U.S. as the "best new eco-getaways." They are:
The Lodge at Sun Ranch in Cameron, Mont., notable for allowing hunting of free-range organic elk; $900 a person for three nights, http://www.sunranchlodge.com . Outside says the ranch plants 10 trees in the Amazon for every guest.
Proximity Hotel, Greensboro, N.C. , a new hotel striving for top certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design code. Solar panels heat 60 percent of the hotel's water, and its elevator captures electricity produced by the brakes as the car descends; doubles from $199, http://www.proximityhotel.com .
Orchard Garden Hotel , San Francisco, built from concrete made from fly ash, a byproduct of coal power plants, with key cards that turn off the heat when you leave; doubles from $190, http://www.theorchardgardenhotel.com /.
Gaia Napa Valley Hotel and Spa , the only LEED gold-certified hotel in the U.S. , where a copy of Al Gore's eco-manifest "An Inconvenient Truth" is kept in every room; doubles from $160, http://www.gaianapavalleyhotel.com . For more information, please visit www.venturacountystar.com
astros going earth friendly in 2008
The Astros recently announced that they will launch an "Astros Play Green" campaign on Earth Day on April 22. The campaign, building off a club initiative that began last summer, will strive to create awareness regarding environmental initiatives in the City of Houston.
The Astros' mission is to create a positive environmental platform at Minute Maid Park and throughout Texas through a commitment to earth-friendly efforts to enhance the quality of life for Astros fans.
|
Catcher Brad Ausmus and infielder Mark Loretta will be the club's spokesmen for the Astros Play Green campaign. Loretta joined the Astros' front-office staff and Waste Management in a recycling campaign that was announced last July. The campaign, still in effect today, included elements such as recycling grease that would later become fuel, using "green" fluorescent bulbs in all possible light fixtures and the presence of 125 recycle bins throughout the ballpark.
Recycle bins were placed in the Astros' front office for employees to recycle paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. Additionally, Astros groundskeepers use only eco-friendly safe chemicals on the field, including seaweed-based fertilizer. All printer toner cartridges in the ballpark are recycled. The Astros recycle an average of three tons of cardboard, plastic and aluminum per game. |

world foundation for medical research and prevention
|
The World Foundation is implementing a new fundraising initiative called “Conscious Style ® : Fashion Benefits AIDS Research” (the Executive Director, George Worthington, is also exploring the idea of calling the project EnviroNouveau ® !) The “ethical fashion” concept is behind this initiative. There are now more opportunities to be smartly dressed in every sense of the word given the proliferation of ethical fashion labels. These are designers and retailers who are producing socially and ecologically sustainable clothing lines without compromising high design and style, thus negating the old tradeoffs between performance, principles and in some cases price -- the exception being the burgeoning eco-lux brands , but influencing the "influencers" is a clever tactic as celebrities set standards. New research and materials in fibers are producing dividends as well. |
Designers they have or am approaching to implement the concept include: Edun , the new range designed by U2's Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, People Tree, veteran designer Katharine Hamnett, Romp Fashion, shoemaker Terraplana , Jenny McPherson, United Nude , Sari, Nathalie Hambro , and Buba London , to name a few in Europe. Long gone are the days when sporting eco-friendly threads just meant wearing ugly itchy hemp pants or recycled tire jackets! Not that there is anything wrong with these per se but the market for these is small in addition to the fact that recycled clothing was originally made in a way that was environmentally and socially detrimental and unsustainable. Conscious Style ® will be a great example of how they can make sustainability work through better design across all parameters. Make something beautiful, make something unique, make something with a story and feel-good values – in this case support for AIDS prevention and research – behind it, and make it more accessible and user-friendly -- and you have the catalytic recipe for shifting a niche category into a mainstream phenomenon. For further information, please contact the World Foundation, George Marshall Worthington, Executive Director, at 713/256.8965.

of the month
"What is considered green is usually for the eco-elite. But if we are actually going to meet the challenge of global warming, we are going to have to weatherize millions of homes and install millions of solar panels. That's millions of new jobs. We need to connect the people who most need the work with the work that most needs to be done… The need to expand the green movement beyond ‘lifestyle environmentalists'”.
