chelsea handler’s party at sloan hall

On Saturday, May 3, men about town Marcus Sloan and Shannon Hall hosted a late night soiree at their posh emporium sloan/hall honoring E! Network talkshow host Chelsea Handler following her one woman show at Verizon Theater. Chandler signed her NYT best selling title ARE YOU THERE VODKA? IT’S ME, CHELSEA. Guests delighted in the uniquely naughty salutations inscribed in each book. Some even commented that theirs wasn’t dirty enough! Carrying the late night theme, guests ordered tacos from ARMANDO’S suped up cherry red taco truck parked out front and washed them down with margaritas and martinis. Notable guests included comedienne/actress and frequent Chelsea Lately guest Heather McDonald, ZZ Top’s bearded icon Billy Gibbons, Erin and Nick Florescu, Erica Updegraff, Tara Simon, Don Mafrige Jr., and Kathleen Galvan. Others that added to the evening were Monsour Taghdisi, Christopher Mendell, and Lance and Jennifer Gilliam. The crowd broke up a little after one o’clock as the night’s soundtrack provider, DJ Melodic, ended with a trip down 1980s lane.

get educated on education

Munir Shivji

Young but tenured, Munir Shivji is a veteran in education, putting traditional Montessori beliefs, progressive applications, new thoughts and community service together in an effort to make a difference in Houston and globally. Munir is currently the Head of Innovative Montessori, founded by his mother, and has recently accepted the position of Director of Education Board with a local foundation currently establishing a Montessori school for underprivileged children in southwest Houston and holds a plethora of community and education-based positions.

"Montessori Education is truly something I believe in and trust. A Montessori education fosters a love for learning, an ability to focus and concentrate social skills to cooperate and work with others, and the ability to work independently. Montessori students readily adapt to any school situation, whether it is another type of academic or educational program that is not Montessori based," explains Mr. Shivji.

With experience in teaching pre-school, kindergarten, and various elementary grades, Munir has a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from the University of Houston and additional credentials in sociology, behavior therapy and an HISD certification. "I truly believe Montessori education can actually bring peace to our world," concludes Mr. Shivji. Such a strong claim, you’re thinking? But as you read on, you will find that Munir’s passion is contagious and you might become a believer, just like us.

A mission of the heart rather than the pocketbook, Munir knows the Montessori education works because, in addition to his career, he dedicates his life to the realization of the results. So, while it was over one hundred years ago that Dr. Montessori first developed the basis for the educational transformation, Munir thrives on the fact that the Montessori method continues to touch millions of lives and he is honored to continue the legacy.

More than just a way to teach, Montessori has "flourished into a beautiful way of life," he explains. Through the engagement of a variety of media outlets, hands-on training sessions, family/parenting workshops and a robust resume of volunteer and nonprofit leadership positions, Munir is achieving the goal of commemorating Maria Montessori's life work through providing information, services and the Montessori experience to the public. Simply put, Munir Shivji fostering the brilliance and importance of education on a daily basis. What is Montessori?
Montessori is a widespread educational environment that attracts children to engage in learning activities of their own individual choice. Under the guidance of a certified Montessori teacher, children learn by making discoveries, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning.

What makes Montessori unique?

Montessori programs do not only focus on academics, they develop children as a "whole". Meaning children also have experiences in social, emotional, physical and spiritual development. The outcome of such an environment, is a learning experience developed to meet the needs of the child.

Current brain research shows us that real learning occurs when the hand is in use, when the learner is happy and feels safe, and when movement is involved. Students observed in a Montessori classroom are engaged in activities that best suit their own individual developmental needs.

Isn't Montessori mainly for preschool children?
No, that's a common "urban myth." Montessori starts from infancy through college preparatory. Montessori education is an aid to life, a journey that unfolds the human potential. School of the Woods www.schoolofthewoods.org is a magnificent local non-profit accredited Montessori school that goes up to high school.

What accomplishments you are proud of you?
In addition to being proud of every child's life I have influenced through Innovative Montessori, I also had the opportunity to spearhead the Houston Montessori Centenary event late last year. “100 Years of Maria Montessori: Celebrating Peace and Culture and Global Village Children's Festival” *were fortunate with honorary chairs which included the Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Honorable Andrea White, Honorable MJ Khan and the City of Houston. www.100yearsmontessori.com

What are your future plans professionally?

My future plan is to continue to spread Montessori as well as establish learning materials for students and create teacher curriculum resource materials. I am currently writing a teacher curriculum book on Culture.

perverse city

The influential artist Maripol exposes the see-and-be-seeners of New York’s ‘80s underground art world. The influential ‘80s artist/fashion designer/filmmaker Maripol is known for her candid Polaroid snaps of New York’s underground art scene. She photographed Deborah Harry, Grace Jones, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Patti Astor and Madonna. The exhibit “Maripolarama: Perverse City” features some of these photos — blown up to larger sizes — which reveal the party lifestyle of the era’s artistic set.

Also featured in the show are a handful of Maripol’s larger, black-and-white Polaroids from her Address Book series. The photos feature recent, lesser-known faces from today’s world of entertainment. These are less party shots than straight-up portraits: Each person is posed simply, alone or next to a loved one.
“ The Maripol: Perverse City” can be viewed through July 4 at the Deborah Colton Gallery.

john alexander: a retrospective

On view through June 22, 2008 at the Audrey Jones Beck Building.
John Alexander: A Retrospective covers a span of thirty years of this Texas native´s wide-ranging career, featuring 61 oil paintings and 36 works spanning the late-1970s to the present.

John Alexander
´s primary focus began with the landscape, and the artist has freely disclosed that the Texas of his early years offered him a broad palette, from "rolling hills and pine forests, salt marsh beaches, and dark, murky bayous" to "rocks, desert, and cactus." For Alexander, these landscapes were frequently alive with menace,

After moving to New York in 1979, Alexander found in his memories of Texas a fresh impetus, as he tapped into local myth and legend in his brilliantly splintered and increasingly abstract compositions.

In subsequent decades, Alexander brought a new breadth of vision to his depictions of his immediate environment, from such phantasmagoric paintings as Honkey-Tonk Moon (1989) to his first-hand portrayals of the storm tossed coast of Eastern Long Island, where he now maintains a studio and garden.

drink your way to bronze and brains

By now you'd think scientists could close the book on caffeine and move on to other mysteries, like why anyone would ever order a chai latte. After all, coffee and related beverages have been revving people up since, oh, the 15th century. And in the past 60 years, researchers have conducted more than 21,000 studies on our favorite stimulant. That's an average of one new study a day through all of those decades.
One study for instance found that, caffeine raises blood pressure, but habitual coffee drinkers are half as likely to die of heart failure as those who don't fill their mug daily. And while caffeine spikes blood sugar, a java habit may help you dodge diabetes.
Be smarter instantly: Down a cup of joe just before your next meeting—it'll boost your mind power for about 45 minutes, according to a recent Austrian study that directly measured the impact of 100 milligrams (mg) of caffeine on brain activity.
Be smarter for life: Refill your cup three times a day. Harvard researchers have determined that men who drink 4 cups of caffeinated coffee a day are half as likely to develop Parkinson's disease as those who skip the java—presumably because caffeine keeps dopamine molecules active. What's more, blocking adenosine may slow the buildup of amyloid-beta, a toxic brain plaque that's associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Jumpstart your workout: Studies show that consuming 140 to 400 mg of caffeine 30 to 60 minutes prior to exercise can improve both speed and endurance and make your workout seem easier. But to achieve those effects, researchers have used either caffeine pills or caffeinated soda. The reason: "Many other chemical compounds in coffee appear to counteract caffeine's ability to impact your exercise session," Graham says. Now you know why energy drinks were created. Use caution If you have heart problems or a family history of heart disease; avoid high-caffeine energy drinks for 4 hours before exercising. A 2006 study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology determined that 200 mg of caffeine decreases blood flow to the heart by up to 39 percent during exercise because it constricts coronary arteries.

Featuring travel destinations and recreation

the big easy
By: Mimi Dinh

“Stop & smell the roses” has been my New Years Resolution for the past couple of years. I must admit, my old mantra “all work and no play” was getting old. So before I start following the footstep of many CEOs of feeling burnt out, I have been making an effort to schedule a trip every month. Whether a quick weekend get-away or a short trip, the monthly prescription is just a chance to get out of the city, unwind, rejuvenate and spend quality time with family and friends.

After my girl-bonding trip last month in Miami, this month I set-off East with my hubby! The destination? Creole culture, cuisine, cuddling and a little business (of course!). Bubbling over with mystical allure, old world ambiance, whimsical essence, vibrant music and an abundance of spice, New Orleans is a one-of-a-kind melting pot that warms the spirit.

The last time I was in New Orleans, I thought my stay at the W was the coolest... I wish being wrong could always be this fabulous! The International House, the town’s first boutique hotel, is about “the convergence of timeless personalized style, intriguing design, and individualized experiences infused with a rock and roll tinge reminiscent of London at the time of the Stones,” explains General Manager Ricky Gomez. Originally built in 1906 as the Louisiana Bank & Trust Co., the restoration was designed around the idea of time and space, remains an “urban artifact” in the city of New Orleans. Just two blocks from the French Quarter, the hotel is adorned with black and white photos of Louis Armstrong and jazz music playing in the background. Simply gorgeous and eclectic at the same time, like the city itself! But you don’t have to take my word for it! Ask Travel & Leisure, Cosmopolitan, Maxim. Conde Naste Traveller, Southern Woman, Playboy, Food & Wine, the Washington Post, New York Magazine, and USA Today.

The first thing I did after waking up was to check out the hotel gym, which was well equipped for everyone’s inner-health nut. Despite being away from home, I was able to get a full work out everyday by using the elliptical machine and free weights, so I can enjoy all the gastronomical delights this city has to offer.

After my work out, it was off to my business consultation. Since this was my main reason for being here, I made the consultation my focus for its duration. But once it was over, I stopped by the hotel bar, Loa, to celebrate my goal of getting the biz side of my trip out of the way in only half a day. Making friends with the bartender Star, she gave me the 411 on “to-dos” in NO. Then, after asking for a “healthy but tasty martini,” she whipped up a cocktail using a plethora of different fresh fruits, which after she cut, mixed, carefully strained, gave a shot of this & that and a quick shake, the rosy-orange liquid made it to my frosty glass. Yum! But since Star made this drink especially for me, it’s not on the menu. According to GM Ricky, “there is always a stock of various fresh fruits at Loa that we can use to create great cocktails”. If you are in this crescent city and want to taste for yourself the “best martini in New Orleans”, ask Star for a “Mimi-tini”. She’ll know what you’re talking about. Maybe if enough people are asking for this drink, it may make itself officially on the menu! Star lived up to her name in my book.

“With Loa being at the heart of the hotel, it is our goal to literally bring the amazing space to life with cocktail programming, music, and energy that will quicken the pulse of the hotel,” says Ricky. Feeling relaxed, we kept social hour alive. Hanging out with me at Loa were Ricky - hotel Manager, Mike - hotel publicist, and Robert - Managing Partner and Founder of LRG (Lifestyle Revolution Group), a conglomerate that includes the International House hotel, Loft 524 (1/2 block away) and Republic Night Club, one of NO’s hottest night spots. Everyone was extremely nice and made me feel so welcomed as we had a good time unwinding and chatting about life in the Big Easy after Katrina.

I was impressed by everyone’s professionalism and entrepreneur spirit, especially Robert for his belief in bringing progressive cultural and technological influences to New Orleans while also maintaining the city's own distinct character and vibrancy. Robert was a recipient of Gambit Weekly’s “40Under40”, a list of remarkable young adults under 40 who excel in a multitude of areas “through innovative thinking and inspired actions.” He formed Lifestyle Revolution Group to assist the city in rebuilding by creating opportunities for residents to develop strong professional and social networks through entertainment.

Having dinner at one of our New Orleans’ fave spots, The Gumbo Shop, my husband and I indulged in a comfort food feast including blackened fish, crawfish etoufee, grilled boudin, and red beans and rice with smoked sausage. For a sweet ending, we strolled to Café du Monde for beignets and café au lait, a must in NO. With a full stomach, my husband was beat and called it a night. So Star, Ricky, and I decided to walk over to Le Phare, inside the Loft 524 hotel, a cool spot where we had a great time chatting while sampling cocktails made by its charming bartender Jonathan. Described by Maxim’s Magazine as “chic digs”, Le Phare encourages guest to enjoy the “art of the cocktail”, which pairs classic New Orleans drinks with contemporary, seasonal cocktails prepared with a healthy blend of fresh ingredients from local farmers' markets, a new twist on the city's traditional social style. Since I’m a typical Asian light-weight drinker, it’s not about the cocktails that interest me about a place, but more about the people and the ambiance. And Le Phare had it all!

My husband and I were on a mission on night two - crawfish. After all, they are in season and we were in NO, right? After asking natives around, we were told Deanie’s was the best place to go in the French Quarter. It’s a seafood restaurant with an extensive menu, but we were disappointed with their crawfish, which were overcooked and a bit too salty. We returned to the Gumbo Shop for some desserts, and afterwards, walked around Jackson Square and Bourbon Street, which we found vastly improved from our last trip. I remember last year at the Jazz Fest, Bourbon Street was barely happening and many shops were still closed from Katrina. This time, people were partying on the streets, the restaurants and bars were jamming with live music, the racy shops were welcoming customers and the scene was as lively as pre-Katrina. Another favorite spot, LaFitte’s Blacksmith, a well-known, dark hole-in-the-wall that has been around for ages, was a comfortable, familiar scene that we were glad to revisit.

The next day, I met up with my husband for lunch at our fave diner, Mother’s, where authentic Cajun dishes are generously served and is packed consistently with locals and visitors alike. After a full stomach, I walked it off all over Jackson Square and my favorite street, St. Charles, while my husband returned to his conference. My favorite store is definitely UAL (United Apparel Liquidation). Specializing in one-of-a-kind designer clothes left over from fashion shows around the world, these threads are couture quality at a fraction of the price. I found a white, floor length cocktail halter dress from an Italian designer that’s to-die-for! With an original price tag of $1,200, my sexy splurge was about a tenth of the cost! Also at the top of my list is Trashy Diva, but don’t let the name fool you… there is nothing trashy about this store. Known for impeccably selected Victorian-inspired accoutrements and specializing in beautiful, vamp-glam lingerie including retro-styled underpinnings, bustiers and corsets, everything is handmade with the finest materials.

While waking around, I stopped at almost every praline shop for a taste. Hands down, Southern CandyMakers gets my vote fore best pralines… They melt in your mouth! I even grabbed a bunch of gift boxes for friends and family. No matter how many times I revisited my favorite gallery, George Rodrigue, looking at his “blue dog” paintings always gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling and put a smile on my face. Finally, after rediscovering a taste for blues music on my excursion, I bought some kick-ass CDs from Joe Bonamasse and Tab Benoit, “cut-to-the-bones” blues music recommended by locals.

On our last night there, we decided to try a more exotic restaurant, Cochon. Chefs Donald Link and Steven Stryjewski put an haute twist on simple standards such as hot sausage with grits, wood-fired oyster roast and more adventurous dishes such as fried rabbit livers with pepper jelly toast, pork cheeks with a cornbread bean cake, and rabbit and dumplings. Everything we ordered was delicious, each with its own distinctive flavors. No wonder this new restaurant ranked # 3 in the New York Times’ recent round up of “15 Coast to Coast Restaurants That Count”. We were going to stop by Sucre afterwards for some sweets but we were so stuffed that we had to skip desserts - a rare thing for us!

On our way back to the hotel, we stopped by Lucy’s, a popular local hang out with an eclectic mix of college kids, yuppies and even more mature folks in their late 40s. The scene was upbeat and full of energy, and the friendly hellos and gestures amongst the crowd showed Texas-challenging hospitality! We met a couple of fun local girls who took us to the next stop just a few blocks away, the Whiskey Bar inside the W hotel. Though not as packed as Lucy’s, Whiskey Bar had its own groove. With a more low-key vibe, guests enjoyed cocktails in their own corners with leisure.

Since it was our last evening, we decided to go back to our hotel bar Loa and try the infamous drink, absynth, an extraordinarily strong liquor which was very popular in the 1800’s, and has been reborn around the U.S. with its legalization for on-premise (bar) sales. So why the hype? The growing Internet craze for this intoxicating drink derives mostly from the liquor's rich history, driving online pundits to build a cult around the drink and even concoct their own home-made recipes. Also called the Green Fairy, La Fée Verte....no other drink has the same romantic history – dated back in the time of the French Impressionist: From Toulouse Lautrec, Degas, Monet, and Van Gogh, to the muse of writers from Verlaine, Rimbaud and Hemingway… in the cafes of Montmartre. Star wasn’t around, but Lauren brought out the absynth glass pitcher with its tiny faucets and poured the liquid over a cube of sugar. My husband and I shared a glass just for a taste so didn’t actually feel any “real” effect of the drink. It reminded me of an extra-strength Ouzo, the official drink of Greece. We thoroughly enjoyed our own personal ritual of “La Louche” while given a brief history lesson by Lauren.

Having lived in NO for 5 years when my family first arrived to the US, the city has always had a special meaning to me, and I never cease to discover new places on every visit. To me, New Orleans is full of lovely contradictions. It’s an old soul yet with a young spirit, modern but with deep-rooted traditions, a familiar place yet mysterious at the same time. Maybe the voodoo magic has cast a spell on the city, keeping it forever exhilarating and full of surprises!

With 58 percent of us improving our homes over the past year (12 per cent more than the year before), we prefer making do to moving out. Faced with high house prices, the popular solution is to expand or improve with the aim of adding value – and now younger people are getting involved, with 68 per cent of people between 18 and 34 investing time and money in doing up their home. Here are some of the best projects to make the most of your home:

  • An extension is the most popular option, as well as the most profitable when done correctly. For structural projects employ a professional to ensure you comply with planning regulations. A good extension should create at least one extra room and be used to bring light into the house.
  • A loft conversion is the second most profitable option. While maximizing existing space, it can increase the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, two key valuation factors.
  • While not as profitable as many think, a new kitchen does add substantial value.
  • Changing the central heating can reap financial rewards. Many homes suffer from dire plumbing. Use an accredited tradesman to fit new boilers and pipes, and invest in an energy-efficient boiler (this will help your energy rating when you sell), high water pressure and a thermostat.

easy ways to make a green summer

1) It’s barbeque season, so it's time for many of us to fire up the grill, but which fuel to use? Some charcoal produces 105 times more carbon monoxide than burning propane, plus lots of harmful VOC's, but propane is a fossil fuel and net contributor to atmospheric CO2. Greener charcoals like Wicked Good Charcoal might be tipping the scales.
2) A Cool summer drink or two might help you not have to crank on the A/C quite so much, and drinks like Adez's blend of fruit juices, soya protein and essential nutrients or Cricket Cola's fizzy drink made from real kola nuts, green tea and pure cane sugar that purports to reduce heart disease, strokes, prevent cancer, and generally make you calm might go awfully nice with that barbeque...
3) If outdoor barbeque and cool drinks aren't enough to keep the heat down, we have some tips for staying cool without running up the energy bill, including "be a fan-atic", "turn off the hot stuff" and "stay out of the kitchen". The remaining two picks are after the jump...
4) If you're still looking for a fun summer vacation, check out (and be inspired by) what some forward-thinking students did on theirs to make planet Earth a cleaner and greener place to live.

5) No matter what you do, remember that, according to some, we are in the age of the toxic vacation", so don't forget the plane truth and that your travel has an impact no matter where you go.

the sexiest thing on wheels

The Raider S is Yamaha’s interpretation of a custom bike made affordable for the average Joe. There's plenty of exposed motor, chrome, flashy paint, kicked-back riding posture and enough bottom-end stomp from all three to inspire a "Torque for Dummies" book.
The bike's design is influenced by what they call "take-off movement imagery" (think of a WW2 fighter plane on a runway). The design team hoped to evoke this mental picture by the imaginary line drawn from the tail up through the handlebars. The other force behind the look is what Star calls "black art theme." Sharp angles are found in places like the handlebar riser clamp, tank-mounted instrument cluster, lower triple tree, footpegs and mirrors. Adding to the Raider's styling is the gleaming exhaust and custom-look cast-aluminum wheels.

quote of the month

“If you share your idea then it becomes an insight. If you put your insight into practice, it becomes an invention. If your invention is useful to someone then the invention has become an innovation. If the innovation increases human happiness then perhaps we have made progress.”
