demystifying the beauty industry
Elite among Medical Spas, Houston’s Dermagenix stands out for many reasons. Specializing in aesthetic medicine and skin rejuvenation, Dermagenix is under the direction of Dr. Kim Vo, an on-sight board certified physician, native Houstonian and industry leader. Dr.Vo is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds memberships with the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine, Center for Performing Arts Medicine, Harris County Medical Association,  and the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery.  Dr. Kim Vo will customize procedures for patients that will benefit and achieve desired results. Additionally, with a Zen-inducing soundtrack, the permeation of aroma-therapy scents, a healthy dose of anti-oxidant tea, Dermagenix provides luxury, a wealth of services and the latest in aesthetic procedural techniques.

Dermagenix to replenish and rejuvenate your precious skin from all of that exposure to the summer sun.But with the influx of industry-related advertising to establishments offering cosmetic procedures popping up everywhere, one sympathizes with consumers as they try to wade through the confusion associated with the rainbow of promises, facts, fictions, benefits, costs and risks associated with obtaining a hint of self-enhancing bling.  Let’s hear from Dr.Vo herself to educate us consumers and help us make the right decision on which fountain and water source to choose from.

1. First, let’s start with why someone should go to a medical spa for beauty treatments versus a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist?

In understanding the weaknesses and strengths of specialization, a prospective patient should first know what type of procedure they desire. A plastic surgeon may top the list for invasive procedures (such as liposuction and breast augmentation), and a dermatologist for skin disease treatments.  But if one seeks spirit-lifting amenities and a non-invasive medical procedure in a pampering environment, it’s likely a Medical Spa will prove to be the optimal choice.

2. Why should one go to Dermagenix versus other medical spas?

Dermagenix is unique in that we make it safe and convenient for clients to have access to a physician, who is on-site during our office hours, unlike many other “medical spas”.  As a physician, I am very interested in ethically helping my patients/ clients.  Also, we don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach.  All of our services are customized.  Even the skin care regimen that we recommend is different for each individual.  At the initial consultation, I assess the client’s skin care goals, what they have done in the past, what their skin type is, and I make recommendations that will fit with their lifestyle and their budget.

3.  What are some of your most unique services?

Titan and Laser Genesis is unique in that it is an advance technology to improve skin laxity by stimulating collagen.  The great thing about this technology is that it has no downtime and virtually no side effect or complication to worry about and is safe for all skin types.  Laser and light technology is a great improvement and addition to topical skin care in that the laser and light technology penetrates deeper in the skin layer, where collagen resides.  Laser skin tightening is not a replacement for a facelift, but it is great for clients that  want improved skin without the downtime of surgery.  We also provide Artefill, which is a newly FDA-approved wrinkle filler that may last up to five years.

4. Can you have an effective, painless anti-aging service?

Titan (laser skin tightening), Laser Genesis, Vibradermabrasion, and even Botox is considered painless because no anesthesia is required.  Fillers are relatively painless (after anesthesia application).  When used as part of an on-going skin care maintenance regimen, our clients can maintain their youthfulness longer. There is also no downtime with these procedures, and most people resume their daily activities right away.

5. Which is more important when addressing wrinkles, Botox or fillers?

For wrinkles and lines on the upper face, and what we call “dynamic wrinkles” which are wrinkles that occur when you make a facial expression, we use Botox.   For wrinkles on the lower face (like the ones that occur “at rest” like the lines around the nose and mouth), we use fillers.

6. Can men benefit from your procedures?

The anti-aging procedures address the skin and wrinkles, and applies to both men and women.  Botox, Fillers, and laser hair removal are very popular with men.

7. What is the story behind Dermagenix?

I have been in private practice internal medicine for many, many  years prior to specializing in skin care and laser technology.  During those years, a lot of my patients asked me about cosmetic procedures like Botox and lasers.  I started to look into it to help my patients decipher what works and what doesn’t.  At the same time, a lot of FDA approved procedures, new advances in laser technology, and skin care made the prospect of painless, no-downtime skin rejuvenation possible...but it is difficult as a consumer to navigate through all the possible choices as to what  IS  the best procedure for their particular concerns? …which facility is reputable AND convenient,  WITHOUT sacrificing safety?

Also, I was getting older and started noticing fine lines and wrinkles on myself…and so finding the solution became a Passion for me.   After many years of research into the field, I opened the doors to Dermagenix on May, 2007.

8.  Where did Dermagenix get its name?

Dermagenix means “new skin” and our goal here is to improve the look of the skin with a regimen to help with skin rejuvenation.  I do believe that as people look better, it helps them to feel better, and this will have many positive ramifications in their lives.  I also believe that people who have great skin at age 20 are usually “born with it”, whereas people who have great skin over age 40 are usually due to great attention to skin care.

9. Who inspires you?

Drs. Jean and Alastair Carruthers, the pioneers in the cosmetic use of Botox inspires me. It is interesting to me that during their use of Botox for medical eye conditions, they observed that Botox reduced wrinkles….and that “side effect” has resulted in the sky-rocketin popularity of Botox for cosmetic use.

10. What products do you sell?

We have the medical-grade Obagi skin care line, and the natural and Paraben-free Dermagenix Solutions line. We also carry La Bella Donna mineral make-up and Pure Inventions concentrated green tea extract.

For your convenience, Dermagenix has just extended their hours for Friday to be from 10AM to 7PM. Dermagenix is located at 6030 S. Rice, suite A, Houston 77081, between The Galleria and the city of Bellaire. For more information call them at 713/ 662.DERM or visit their website www.dermagenix.net

the benefits of soy
Soy is a complete protein, and soyfoods are rich in vitamins and minerals including folate, potassium and, in some cases, fiber.

In the past 15 years, soyfoods have attracted the attention of research scientists around the world for health properties beyond basic nutrition as well.

The food and drug administration (FDA) officially recognized the cholesterol-lowering effects of soy protein in 1999 with a health claim stating that 25 grams of soy protein per day may reduce the risk of heart disease. Most soyfoods are also low in saturated and trans fats, one reason why the American heart association has recognized soyfoods' role in an overall heart-healthy diet.
Recent research suggests that soy may also lower risk of prostate, colon and breast cancers as well as osteoporosis and other bone health problems, and alleviate hot flashes associated with menopause.

These are the unmet needs of forward-thinking marketers, and these are the areas in which we excel.”

a trek back in time – adventure in vietnam
by CHAU NGUYEN
My mother had an adventurous childhood. She hiked through mountains and explored forests. She swam in waterfalls. Mom was born and raised in Dalat, a small city nestled in the south central highlands of Vietnam and once considered the playground of the French, who colonized the country from the early to mid 1900’s. Some consider it to be a cross between Vietnam and the French Alps, with its pine covered hills and French style villas. I have to agree. My mom was born and raised in heaven on earth.

Chau Nguyen is a former reporter and anchor for KHOU-TV. You can read more about her adventures in travel and life at pinkgurugal.com
Mom’s happy childhood traipsing through the forests and playing in the waterfalls sadly ended when her father fell ill and died when she was twelve years old. The family moved south to Saigon and from that point forward, my Mom worked as a seamstress to help support her mother and six siblings.

I formed my initial impression of Dalat upon my arrival, when I caught my first glimpse of the massive Xuan Huong Lake that dominates the landscape. Named after a famous 17th century Vietnamese poet who wrote of love and romance, the lake is Dalat’s main attraction. At almost any time day or night, you will find people strolling along its banks or simply relaxing as they absorb the serenity and beauty that surrounds them.

Dalat’s weather is cool and crisp most of the year, so I was glad I packed a sweater.

I stayed at the recently opened Evason Ana Mandara Villas (www.sixsenses.com/Evason-Ana-Mandara-Villas-Dalat), which is arguably the nicest resort hotel in town. It is comprised of 17 restored French villas that were constructed in the 1920’s and 1930’s, nestled on a hillside overlooking the city. One of the villas houses the famous Six Senses Spa, where I inexplicably found myself on numerous occasions during my four night stay. It is easy to splurge when you are paying Best Western prices for five star amenities and service. Surfing the internet, I landed a great deal and paid about $70 per night; massages were available for $40 per session.

Retracing my mother’s love of the outdoors, I hired a guide from Hardy Dalat Adventures Sports (hardyadventuretours.net). For $19 per day, my guide, Tuyen, a business undergraduate student, accompanied me for two consecutive days, hiking and biking throughout the area.

On the first day, we drove just outside the city to Tiger Falls, affectionately named after a tiger that lived and died there. His lair is situated close to a pristine waterfall and a small suspension bridge for trekkers to cross the river conveniently.

As we traversed the valley surrounding the river, the landscape changed from that of a pine forest to one of coffee farms that are government-owned but operated by local villagers. Coffee is one of Vietnam’s biggest exports. There are many breathtaking views along this hike, but the most eye opening was the one at the top of the mountain. We stopped to visit with the Lat people, a small group of rural mountain villagers who literally live off of the land without the benefit of running water or electricity. There are about 100 villagers and they only began receiving tourists within the last ten years.

This trek totaled 12 miles and lasted an entire day because Tuyen, another trekker from Denmark, and I decided to take things easy and simply enjoy the time without the pressure of keeping to a set schedule or itinerary. Tuyen had packed a lunch consisting of French bread, cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers. In Dalat, the French influence remains strong in many aspects, including the Vietnamese diet.

To this day, whenever Mom speaks of Dalat, she lights up.

The second day was a bit more grueling and active. I opted to participate in a 5 hour mountain biking trip that started at my hotel and crossed the city into daunting hills. Clearly, this ride was not for the faint of heart and, at times, the hills were so steep that my guide and I had to dismount and walk. But it was worth it. The views of Lang Biang Mountain that overlook
Dalat are breathtaking. The terrain included lakes, pine forests and small country farms and roads.

To this day, whenever Mom speaks of Dalat, she lights up. Those were her happiest times. Dalat has a special place in her heart and now I know why.

home decor to reach for
Current fashionista status notwithstanding, from the moment they first played "dress up," most of them have innately known fashion's most highly regarded truth: accessories make an outfit.
Granted it took a while before they got the editing thing right. At first it seemed like the more hats, necklaces, bracelets, belts and rings the better, but they grew up and so did our tastes. They quickly warmed to the idea that a well made, classic black dress can go anywhere with the right accessories and eventually figured out that the same is true for jeans. But many of them still haven't given this style rule the freedom it needs to glam up our homes. See, almost everything that is true for dressing a body is true for dressing a home. And the same amazing impact the right bracelet can have on an outfit, the right accessory can have on a room.
Today, they are putting the focus on doors. The utilitarian masses don't often come off as style statements, but they could. A door is the welcoming point. And whether it's granting entrance to a room, home, or piece of furniture, done right it can immediately impart a feeling of modern luxury.
So take what you already know, that innate sense of when to add a jolt of color or a streak of shine, and apply it to your doors. We've found a bauble to dress up any type, from cupboard doors to furniture drawers, sliders, interior and exterior doors. There's quite a variety but one thing's for certain: these are pretty pieces you'll want to reach for.

the new iPhone is out
It's been a long, leak-filled wait, but Apple finally took the wraps off its 3G iPhone. Thinner edges, full plastic back, flush headphone jack, and the iPhone 2.0 firmware -- Apple's taking a lot of the criticisms to heart from the first time around. Obviously 3G is at the forefront, but they're also making sure it's available all over internationally, works with enterprises, runs 3rd party apps... and does it all for cheaper. Apple claims its 3G speeds trounce the competition, with page loads 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750 -- and of course it completely trounces the old EDGE data speeds.

Battery life isn't getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers for faster location. Unfortunately, as expected there's no front-facing cam, and while its edges are thinner than before it's still about a millimeter thicker at the center (12.3mm over 11.6mm before). Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year, with the black 8GB going for $199 and 16GB for $299 in black or white.

duffy brings '60s pop sound back
For every yin, there's a yang: everything has its opposite. After lounging to the very lounge-y songs on "Rockferry" (Mercury/Rough Trade), it could be surmised from Duffy's cooing vocals and her penchant for retro song styles that she is the inverse of Amy Winehouse.Where Winehouse recycled a Motor City vibe, Duffy on her debut album sounds like she followed Dusty Springfield to all the way to Muscle Shoals in Alabama and attempts to make an album with both the feel and texture of the landmark "Dusty In Memphis."
Sounding like a cross between Dusty Springfield and Jewel, the rest of the album features performances that echo the pop perfection of the late 1960s with a thoroughly modern attitude, best exhibited on the forlorn "Hanging On Too Long" and the clear-eyed "Distant Dreamer." And even when Duffy concedes to her emotions on "I'm Scared," the exposed vulnerability sounds gorgeous and confident.
Purists may scoff at Duffy's obvious fixation with '60s female pop singers, but it's precisely that obsession that has driven her to create this cool, retro-modern album. And, unlike the less genteel Winehouse, Duffy never once had to utter the word "rehab."
