mikel marketing celebrates 9 years of success at the “to the nines” party
Photos: Tom Huynh

On November 8, Mikel Marketing commemorated another award-winning year at a “To the Nines” themed party. Nine honorable hosts and nine media sponsors were joined by more than 300 guests to help Mimi Dinh, president of Mikel Marketing, and her team, celebrate the firm’s ninth anniversary and all of the success that 2008 had to offer.

Mikel Marketing
is an award-winning, full-service marketing and comprehensive special events management and production company. Known for innovative thinking and creativity, their services include marketing, public relations, promotion, event coordination, advertising, and graphic and Web design.

As 2008 comes to an end, Dinh and her staff had a significant list of accomplishments to celebrate. Aside from the success Mikel Marketing has had with clients, the company also earned many national and international awards. This year alone, 1) Mikel Marketing won the 2008 Summit International Award in the “Green Marketing” category “For outstanding work in Marketing Strategy and Effectiveness” for their client Green by Adeline; 2) The 2008 Communicator’s Silver Award of Distinction also for their work with Green by Adeline; 3) Mikel Marketing was the Platinum Winner of the Hermes Creative Awards for a Design It Yourself Catalog; and 4) Dinh herself received the Savvy Sister Award from Houston Woman Magazine’s HER Awards, which recognizes eight individuals who influence and inspire those around them and, thereby, serve as an excellent role model as well as inspiration for others in the community.

Mikel Marketing celebrated its ninth anniversary at a “fancy-smanshy” private event. To compliment the “To the Nines” theme, Dinh aligned nine prominent Houstonians to host the chic gala in addition to nine media sponsors. Hosts include Chloe Dao, Faisal Amin, John Kuhl, Dr. Stephen Moore, Chau Nguyen, Gordon Quan, Yuki Rodgers, Stephanie Talafuse, and Mary E. Yoder. It was truly an evening of glitz and glamour as guests were dressed “To the Nines.”

The exclusive event kicked off with the DJ spinning ‘loungy’ tunes to set the mood. Beautiful models strut their stuff amongst the crowd, showing of Chloe Dao’s gorgeous holiday collection. Raffles held throughout the night gave lucky winners gift certificates from Bliss Nail Spa, Dermagenix Medical Spa, Lot 8, Norris Salon, Reef, Zushi, Euro Space, and Bay Area Magazine. One lucky winner even received a deluxe two-night stay at the International House in New Orleans, LA.

Nine Press Sponsors included ENVY, Health & Fitness Magazine, Saigon Tex News, Bay Area Houston, Skirt! Magazine, The Heights Pages, H Texas, Total Body, and the Biz Radio Network, which had a booth set up during the party to interview each of the nine VIP hosts. In-Kind Sponsors included Crave Gourmet Bakery & Catered Café, International House, Bliss Nail Spa, Dermagenix, Texas Tents & Events, Euro Space, 360 Vodka, Landy Cognac, Lot 8 and Norris of Houston. Underwriters included CyrusOne, telecom611.com, and breakroomdelivery.com.

A full bar—stocked with 360 Vodka, Tequila Rose, Landy Cognac, champagne and Kono Baru wines—provided a variety of drinks for guests to enjoy, including pink martinis, chocolate martinis, champagne, and sauvignon blanc and shiraz wine. Satisfying the guest’s hunger was Chef Tarsha from Crave Gourmet Bakery & Catered Café, who prepared Three Cheese Tortellini w/ Spicy Pesto, Mesquite Chicken Nachos, Italian Meatballs, and Sweet & Sour Pork Dumplings. For those with more a sweet tooth, a dessert station was offered, serving Deluxe Chocolate Brownies with Hazelnut Ganache.

The office’s interior was transformed from a business workspace into a luxurious party scene. Reserved for VIPs, the upstairs mezzanine became a secluded and intimate setting. The exterior, covered by a tent, was endowed with chic coffee tables, chairs and sofas provided by Euro-Space, creating a sexy outdoor lounge under the stars.

Notable attendees included Nick and Nancy Nikolovski, Lydia Osadchey, Sydney Dao, Miya Shay, newlyweds Dr. John and Sarah Bergeron, Dusty Gilbert, R.D. Yoder, John Kim, Nicki Gray, and Janelle Flatt, just to name a few.

Staying true to her mantra, “in order to do well, you ‘gotta’ do good,” Dinh chose to incorporate the party with a fundraiser for her favorite charity, ESCAPE Family Resource Center, whose mission is to prevent child abuse. All guests were asked for a $10 dollar donation at the door which, along with the proceeds from the underwriters and raffle tickets, benefited the organization.

Mikel Marketing is located in Midtown at 2000 Bagby, suite 112, Houston, Texas 77002. For more information please visit www.mikelmarketing.com or call 713/807-1133.

envy names round-one best bartender

On Thursday, November 20, the best and the brightest—alcohol minds that is—came out to the Black Swan at the Omni to show off their bartending skills at the ENVY Magazine Best Bartending Contest, ready to blow the minds of any discerning mixed drinker.

The first-round event, sponsored by Tequila Distinguido and Momentum Audi, featured three bartenders ready to begin the fight of the best drink to add to the ENVY repertoire. The fashionable fans participated in the judging, partaking in the tasting. The judges included Nicole Zaza, Houston City Editor from ENVY Magazine and Jared Lang from Momentum Audi.

The final winner was hard to choose, with varying drinks ranging from fruity, sunrisy drinks to Bailey’s Irish Cream concoctions mixed with honey and shaved chocolate. But, after much deliberation, one was chosen. The round-one winner was Daniel Olguin, veteran of Zimm’s, with a pleasing drink. Be on the lookout for round two!

dancing under the stars

Dancing under the Stars: the Urban Green Gala, held on Thursday, November 20, 2008, attracted nearly 400 young professionals to the stage of Miller Outdoor Theatre for a night of dancing and revelry in support of Hermann Park Conservancy. The event raised roughly $19,000 for the Conservancy.

Event attendees were greeted Thursday evening by a green runner of freshly cut grass, a twist on the traditional red carpet. Once onstage, guests could lounge on eco-friendly furniture provided by High Fashion Home, or participate in salsa lessons led by Strictly Street Salsa. Continuing on the dance theme, attendees enjoyed performances by Soniquete Flamenco Dance Company and Bella Donna Dance.

“We are incredibly pleased by the turnout Thursday night and the immense show of community support for Hermann Park,” said Veronica Juarez, community development manager. Co-chaired by Alton LaDay and Divya Paralkar, the event doubled funds raised by any past Urban Green event.

Event sponsors included Andrews Kurth LLP, Pernod Ricard USA, Green Bank, Advantage BMW Midtown, Houston Magazine, CenterPoint Energy, BP, BrightBox design company, Saint Arnold, Luby’s, Cargo Cosmetics, and New Living hardware store.

networking guru, rd yoder
Networking can be defined as building an enviable connection with people that you can provide value to and receive value from. In the business world, networking events are becoming the norm. Such events involve social gatherings, seminars and organizational expos. One of the most important factors in discovering how to effectively network is learning how to listen. RD Yoder, president of the Houston Networking News, suggests that successful networking is the direct result of listening to what others have to say.

Exchanging a few words, a handshake and several business cards may have worked in the past, but in today's networking world, it's all about cultivating relationships. Avoid the nod-and-smile approach while subconsciously scanning the room to see who else is there. Instead, continue to ask engaging questions and actually listen to the answers. Yoder explains that if you’re friendly and genuinely interested, others will feel comfortable and at ease talking with you.
There’s an art to successful networking and business development.

In his answers below, Yoder gives us a brief look at the fundamental elements necessary to effectively network yourself.

As president of the Houston Networking News, what are some of your duties? My duties include day-to-day operations regarding the outward appearance of the organization. I also handle the sales and marketing devices of HNN. It's quite fun and rewarding!

How did you get to where you are today in the business world? (What is your business background)? Sales, marketing and business development experience. However, my passion for driving business and assisting others has made me who I am today.

If you were not doing what you are today professionally, what would you be doing?  Probably something in sales or people related; I love helping others and being out and about in the business community.

Who is your role model and why? I have and have had several role models in my day. They have acted as mentors, advisors and good friends. My parents are honest, hard-working, integrity driven people; they taught me to do business the right way. I hope I can live up to that standard. Also, my grandfather; he was a Godly man who always gave me great wisdom and insight. I use it to this very day, many years after he went to Heaven! Finally, I love Zig Ziglar. He's the epitome of how “sales” is done right!

Thus far, have you achieved all of your goals for HNN? Has your career at HNN turned out the way you had envisioned it? I have not achieved all of our goals. Let me tell you why… I am driven and want to help others, so sometimes you have to step back and re-prioritize your focuses. In my line of work, helping others comes before self interests. I can say this much, though, I do plan to be THE guy of networking!

Your expo is coming up in December …….how many companies/corporations do you expect to participate this year? We'll have over 100 companies exhibiting/sponsoring and hundreds more attending.

What is the purpose of the expo and what can sponsors/visitors expect? The Expo is quite simply an opportunity to meet people for the purpose of creating and sustaining relationships post event. We designed this event for the Houston business professional. We want to see everyone become successful! It's a fabulous event. No one should miss it. Where else can you go to an event and meet hundreds of business professionals HUNGRY to meet new people?

How can a professional be successful at the expo in terms of networking and building relationships?  I could devote this whole article to these questions. The best way to be successful at this event is to put others first. I cannot stress that enough. Find out about others, show GENUINE interest and be kind to everyone you meet. Do not, do not, spill everything about your company in the first minute of an introduction. We all have two great physical devices: our ears and hands. Use them well! Ears for listening to what they have to say and hands for greeting them warmly.

When you are not working, how do you relax or have fun? I spend time with my beautiful wife. We love trying different cuisines and restaurants, various venues around town, and lots of different activities. I also like hanging out with the kids. Finally, I am big sports fan, so anything sports related is fun.

What are your future plans? To be THE next big thing in networking. We want to help as many people as possible. There's no better way to build business, relationships and sales than through networking. Our goal is to be in every major U.S. city and we will achieve that goal! Personally, I have been asked to write some books and also help others through speaking. I'd love to do exactly that!

experience ice skating at the galleria
You want get the holiday shopping out of the way, but the kids groan at the thought of being dragged through another mall. Take them to the Galleria and turn them loose on the ice while you shop in peace. Public sessions run daily, and skaters of every skill level are welcome. It isn't uncommon to see young figure skaters in full costume twirling in the center of the rink, while less sure-footed skaters hug the outside walls. The Galleria Skating Rink also offers lessons for groups or one-on-one with private instructors. Group skating rates for scout troops, youth groups, or birthday parties make this an affordable (and fairly tidy) activity for any age.

Have a piece of it all! Holidays celebrated throughout the world will be vibrantly bursting under one roof when the Seasons of Sharing exhibit is unveiled at the Children's Museum of Houston. There couldn’t be a more appropriate celebration in town! 10 easy ways to go green
(Taken from World Watch Institute, www.worldwatch.org)
  1. Save energy to save money.
    • Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer
    • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)
    • Unplug appliances when you're not using them.
    • Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.
    • Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. If you must use a dryer, consider adding dryer balls to cut drying time.
  2. Save water to save money.
    • Take shorter showers to reduce water use.
    • Install a low-flow showerhead.
    • Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet.
    • Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your garden.
  3. Less gas = more money (and better health!).
    • Walk or bike to work.
    • Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work.
    • Lobby your local government to increase spending on sidewalks and bike lanes.
  4. Eat smart.
    • If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week.
    • Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can.
    • Watch videos about why local food and sustainable seafood are so great.
    • Whatever your diet, eat low on the food chain.
  5. Skip the bottled water.
    • Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water.
    • Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminum rather than plastic, with you when traveling or at work.
    • Check out this short article for the latest on bottled water trends.
  6. Think before you buy.
    • Go online to find new or gently used secondhand products.
    • Check out garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment shops for clothing and other everyday items.
    • When making purchases, make sure you know what's "Good Stuff" and what isn't.
  7. Borrow instead of buying.
    • Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies.
    • Share power tools and other appliances. ‘
  8. Buy smart.
    • Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging.
    • Wear clothes that don't need to be dry-cleaned. This saves money and cuts down on toxic chemical use.
    • Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products.
  9. Keep electronics out of the trash.
    • Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
    • Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes.
    • Recycle your cell phone.
    • Ask your local government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.
  10. Make your own cleaning supplies.
    • The big secret: you can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them.
    • Making your own cleaning products saves money, time, and packaging-not to mention your indoor air quality.

Young Ambassadors | Project Description
Young Ambassadors is a group of young professionals (ages 18-40) coming together in a special way to support ESCAPE’s efforts to “prevent child abuse and neglect before a child is hurt” by raising awareness of Greater Houston’s child abuse crisis and the availability of the agency’s services for at-risk families.

ESCAPE Family Resource Center is a privately supported nonprofit, 501(c)(3), organization that provides child abuse prevention programs and parenting classes. By participating in family-based educational classes, adults and children learn how to effectively cope with stress, listen and speak from the heart, change someone’s behavior without resorting to punishment or violence, and work together to solve their problems. ESCAPE’s interventions enhance the community by making it possible for all children to awaken to brighter days free from the threat of being harmed by their parents or other caregivers.

Young Ambassadors have three primary jobs:
  1. Raise awareness of Greater Houston’s child abuse problem,
  2. Raise funds for ESCAPE through donations, and
  3. Cheer runners in the Chevron Houston Marathon (January 18, 2009)

ESCAPE Family Resource Center is an official charity of the 2009 Chevron Houston Marathon through the “Run for a Reason” Program. Last year the marathon raised more than $1.25 million for local and national charities. ESCAPE raised about $20,000 through this campaign. This year’s goal is to double the support generated from this event -- to $40,000!

Supporters of ESCAPE gain access to Personal Fundraising Pages on the marathon's website that allows for online donations through the "Run for a Reason" program.

The Young Ambassadors’ long-term goal is to “support the mission of ESCAPE while serving as community ambassadors in the prevention of child abuse.”

By serving as a Young Ambassador, members learn how to:

  1. Communicate ESCAPE’s message,
  2. Raise money for the organization in a unique way, and
  3. Make a difference in the life of children living across the Greater Houston area.
