a “not so silent night” party

On Wednesday, December 17, Pagoda Vietnamese Bistro and Bar celebrated the season in their “Not so Silent Night” Christmas party. Owners Sandy and Ester Tran welcomed more than 200 guests to indulge in savory hors d’ oeuvres, holiday-inspired cocktails, live band entertainment, and most notably, karaoke.
Sponsored by 002 magazine, the evening affair kicked off with DJ Viijilante spinning beats to set the mood, while sexy Asian models surfed the crowd, showing off Jean Couture’s latest collection. As guests sipped gingerbread lattes and pumpkin-tinis made with 3 Olives Vodka and Martell cognac, they were able to witness first-hand all that Pagoda Bistro had to offer. The restaurant’s interior, embellished with hues of gold and charcoal, was complemented with fresh flower creations, sparkling Christmas ornaments, and a dazzling Christmas tree, creating the perfect holiday atmosphere. The exterior patio, surrounded by bamboo, acted as a secluded oasis, ideal for those who were seeking a breath of fresh air.
|
  |
To satisfy guests’ hunger, Pagoda served multiple kinds of hors d’ oeuvres, including their signature Pagoda Rolls, Spring Rolls, Shrimp Skewers, and Chicken Salad on a toasted chip.
Further into the evening, Nine Days ‘Til Sunday took the stage. As they sang several songs from their first album and a few cover songs, the crowd responded in approval and delight. The fun didn’t stop there, as the band wrapped up, the microphone was handed over, the monitor was positioned … it was karaoke time! The already energy-infused atmosphere, escalated to an all-time high. The remainder of the evening was spent singing, dancing, laughing, and ultimately enjoying the company of others during the holiday season.
|
  |
Owners (and sister duo) Sandy and Ester Tran chose to incorporate the party with a fundraiser for a local charity, ESCAPE Family Resource Center, whose mission is to prevent child abuse (www.escapefrc.org) Guests were asked for a 5 dollar donation at the door which, along with 5 percent from the bar sales benefited the organization.
Notable attendees included Stephanie & Gil Talafuse, Gordon Quan, Pamela Tran Park, Dr. & Mrs. Bruce & Kristi Nguyen, John Kuhl, Dr. Stephen Moore, Aldo Catania, Mark Dang Tran, john Kim, and Lidya Osadchey.
Pagoda Vietnamese Bistro and Bar is making an epicurean impact in the Houston Heights. The recently opened restaurant embraces high style with a laid back attitude, making every dining experience unforgettable. Their full menu, equal in quality to even the most traditional Vietnamese cuisine, offers everything from mouth-watering vermicelli noodle bowls, to exquisite Lemongrass Lamb. | so you want to be a model! |
Stephanie Talafuse, owner and founder of Premiere Promotions, knows a thing or two about modeling. With more than 25 years of modeling experience under her belt, within the states and abroad, Stephanie has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly side of the bustling industry. Through countless pageants, commercials, fashion shows, and photo-shoots, Stephanie has managed keep a solid head on her shoulders. Rather than letting the harsh industry break her, she let it inspire her. Tired of witnessing mistreated models and disorganized events, Talafuse decided to take matters into her own hands…
“I remember running around back stage trying to keep everyone calm during a fashion show, or helping to pose a model during a photo shoot because she was new and being yelled at” Talafuse said. “I often seemed to be the one coming up with the ideas for theme/production of shows. One day it just dawned on me; I said to myself: ‘I can do a better job organizing, choreographing, and producing an event than these people can’. So, I went home, started teaching modeling while I got my Bachelors of Fine Arts at Sam Houston State University and opened my own company.”
Now, a successful business owner, Talafuse is dedicated to teaching and helping her models become the best that they can be. In her answers below, Talafuse gives a closer look at how she got to where she is today.
You have been in the modeling and pageant industry for more than 25 years; how did you first gain entry into the business? I started out competing in local pageants when I was 9 and got interested in the modeling business when I turned 14. I took classes at Barbizon Modeling School and was a finalist in the national model search for Elite Models for their “Faces of the 80's” Model Search at Macy's. Later, I won a modeling scholarship with Page Parkes when I was 17, then won a modeling contract with Idea Models in Milan, Italy where I lived and worked for six months.
What did you enjoy most about the modeling industry? I really enjoyed being in front of the camera and traveling to Europe. I was an exchange student in Germany when I was 14 and loved it. I never really wanted to be a famous model but it was great money and I worked all the time. I was one of the lucky ones that went to school half a day my senior year because I was modeling a lot during the 80’s. I also had 7 years of dance behind me, cheerleading, acting and speech so I was really into choreography and production. The shows were fun, I loved them all.
What do you like least about the industry and why? The 80’s were really tough since most of the models looked “all American;” I had to work really hard to get noticed by clients. However, in Europe the models from Paris and Italy were jealous of American women, mainly blondes. We were always working and received more attention since we looked so different. And the men were difficult too. There was no internet, and everyone said they were an agent or a photographer so it was hard to trust people. I was so naïve.
What advice can you give girls trying to break into the industry? The best advice I could give is to do your homework. Make sure you get references on photographers before you shoot with them. Check out the background of the agency you are interested in before you sign with them. Don’t sign anything until you have someone professional read over the contract. All modeling and talent agencies in Texas must have a license, and, make sure they are members of the Better Business Bureau. Also, you really need to make sure you are confident and happy with who you are because there are so many let downs in this industry.
And what advice can you give working models to be better at their game? Read up on the fashion world, watch modeling/fashion videos, surf the modeling world on-line and order fashion magazines. If you want to succeed in this industry, you need to be well rounded. What makes a model successful? Great pictures, good attitude, outgoing personality, great physique and someone who is confident, smart and willing to work hard. You have to practice!!!
Now that you are the one calling the shots, how does it feel to be on the other side of the fence? Fabulous! It has been an amazing ride and I am truly blessed with all the success in my career and all the people I met along the way that helped me get where I am today. A lot of people in the modeling world today didn’t start out modeling, they might be a good business person or they may be creative but I had over 15 years experience in modeling world and in pageants before I opened my business, so I feel truly feel lucky to have had this experience before I opened my own agency.
Tell us a little about your adventures in Europe. Do you think your experiences abroad helped you become who you are today? Definitely! I had the worst luck in Italy. I wasn’t prepared and my parents didn’t know anything about the modeling world over there, or how hard it was on a naïve girl from a small town. I was used to modeling locally for Weiner’s, Foleys and being in local fashion shows. Over there I would go on a casting with 300 girls that all spoke 3-4 languages and were all 5’11, skinny and had incredible portfolios. I was laughed at when I got there and showed them my modeling pictures. They cut off all my hair, kept my American wardrobe and took me shopping for very expensive clothes that I had to reimburse them for. I was put in a small 2 bedroom apartment for $1,000 rent per month with 5 other girls, all from other countries. They stole your food, wore you clothes and ran up telephone bills. It was the hardest and scariest time for me, but I got through it. I really spent time watching people and learning and trying to understand that the business is really insecure and manipulative. I made friends fast with great people and really tried to learn the language. I was lucky because I worked a lot and made great money. I am a stronger, better person now because I can share my story with other girls and help them before they go into this business unprepared.
How would you describe your models? What differentials them from others? They are all really personable, beautiful people on the outside and inside. I am very selective with my models because my agency is a promotional modeling agency. We take girls all sizes and shapes because our clients need outgoing, beautiful women to represent their products and services. We staff conventions, trade-shows, commercials and many other events and promotions. The modeling business has really changed for the better, almost anyone can model now. You don’t have to be 5’11 and 120lbs. You can be curvy, petite or a plus size, even modeling at 39 plus.
Who usually books models from Premiere Promotions? Most of our clients are from out of town. Our agency staffs models for conventions, trade-shows and product demos for clients out of town looking for local talent in Texas. We also get local work for local cable commercials, liquor distributors, fashion shows and special events and promotions.
Have you had any “nightmare” clients, or clients who have crossed the line with your models? I’ve been fortunate that we haven’t had any real nightmares, but when you are dealing with men, especially in the nightclubs or at liquor promotions they seem to sometimes step over the line. We do everything we can to check out the companies that hire us before we send the models out for a job.
Nowadays, you see models working well into their 40 and older. Do you think models in Houston can have this kind of success and longevity of a career? Yes I do. I just turned 40 and I still get called to be in a commercial or a print ad. Most of the women who come to work for us 30+ are just getting started so they are fresh and ready to learn. They are smart and have been around the block. It’s nice to book someone who is responsible. But to answer your question, there is not much work here in Houston in the fashion scene but it’s a great place to get started no matter how old you are.
Since its opening in 1992, how has Premiere Promotions grown as a company? We started with 10 female models here in Houston and we now have over 800 girls, guys and children that work for us all over Texas. Houston is our home base so we have about 400 models locally but we also staff in other cities such as; Corpus Christi, Dallas, Ft Worth, San Antonio, Austin and Tyler, just to name a few.
What are you long term goals for Premiere Promotions? My goals have changed in the last 2 years. I also own Premiere Swimwear & Accessories and produced many pageants and model searches in the Lone Star State. I’ve decided to just concentrate on the Miss Texas Galaxy and the Little Miss & Mister Texas Tropics Pageant and produce the Miss Darque Tan Model Search. At one point, I wanted to be the largest promotional modeling agency in the Southwest, but I’ve been doing this a long time and it’s really a lot of hard work and long hours, so I’ve decided to down size my company and just concentrate on the agency and pageants. new year, new you
|
For the New Year, Dermagenix Medical Spa wants to help discover the new you. This is the time to take a look in the mirror and evaluate what you see. If you’re ready to make a serious beauty resolution without the surgery and down time, Dermagenix has several non-invasive Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treatments for you to consider. With so many advances in technology, why take the risks of going under the knife? This is your chance to have a more refreshed, youthful look (even out skin tones, refine pores, smooth lines and tighten skin)! So let’s raise our champagne glasses and salute a more fabulous, sexy and confident new you.
The first step to discovering the new you? Understanding the five major Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treatments that Dermagenix has to offer:
- The Limelight IPL (Intense Pulse Light) Facial, also known as IPL, is a light based procedure that addresses problems at the skin’s surface, including redness, mottled complexion, freckles, and sun damage. The Limelight Facial is a new, non-invasive approach to skin rejuvenation using Cutera’s Limelight. The procedure offers the advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with aging and photo-damage. IPL is ideal for any part of your face, neck and décolleté with skin redness, telangiectasia (tiny veins) or brown spots. One to three treatments are usually sufficient to see results. Within one to three weeks, the darkened spots will flake off and fade, exposing fresh, even-toned skin.
- Laser Genesis® skin therapy is an innovative, technologically advanced way to promote vibrant and healthy looking skin. Patients can have a fresh, youthful appearance by treating those conditions that are typically associated with the premature signs of aging and sun damage. Scientifically proven to produce new collagen, Laser Genesis® utilizes non-invasive laser technology to discretely and effectively treat fine-lines, diffuse redness, manage large pores, even skin texture, and reduce scars. Patients can expect to see subtle yet consistent results after each treatment, without unwanted side effects such as bruising or skin irritation; however, the overall effect of multiple treatments can be quite dramatic.
- Vein Treatment- Utilizing a combination of treatment modalities including Cutera laser technology, Sclerotherapy, Venous Ligation, and EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), Dermagenix treats a broad range of vessels to make unattractive facial and leg veins a thing of the past. From tiny spider veins, to deep blue reticular veins, to large varicose veins, Dermagenix can make them disappear quickly, safely, and with little downtime, on all skin types. Often, one or two treatments are sufficient; however, the number of treatments necessary depends on the quantity, color, and size of the vessels being treated. Dermagenix proudly partners with The Vein Specialists of Houston; whose physicians have over 60 years of experience in the field of cardiovascular surgery.
- Titan™ skin tightening treatment uses light energy to heat the dermis deep beneath your skin's surface. Without surgery, recovery time, or injections, Titan™ is an ideal solution for the face, abdomen, arms and more. Dermagenix utilizes Titan’s™ safe infrared light to heat the dermis well below the skin's surface, during which the skin's surface is protected through continuous cooling. Titan's™ light-based platform provides a more uniform distribution of energy for heating the deep dermis than other energy sources. Since the procedure heats tissue under the skin's surface, patients of any skin type or age can be treated.
- Acne Treatment- For acne and acne scars, Dermagenix utilizes the Smoothbeam 1450 nm diode laser. It is the first device on the market specifically designed to target the root cause of acne, the sebaceous gland. It provides the perfect balance of controlled cooling of the epidermis with precise heating of the upper dermis. And for patients seeking smoother skin, Smoothbeam safely improves acne scars and softens fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.
Specializing in aesthetic medicine and skin rejuvenation, Dermagenix is one of the few medical spas in Houston with a board-certified physician on site. Dr. Kim Vo, consults and performs all laser and injectable procedures.
Throughout the month of January, Dermagenix will offer $99 off any Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treatment, including IPL, Laser Genesis, Vein Treatment, Smoothbeam and Titan™. Artefill wrinkle filler is $999 per syringe (regularly $1500)
Dermagenix Medical Spa is located at 6030 S. Rice, Suite A, Houston, TX 77081. For more information and to schedule an appointment, please call 713/662-DERM or visit www.dermagenix.net.

new year, new you – start with little beauty maintenance tricks that lead to BIG results…like brow waxing. |
Inspired by the New Year, Bliss Nail Spa is determined to fulfill as many resolutions as possible. For those who resolute to improve their looks and their well-being, Bliss is the place to be. Offering traditional eyebrow waxes and soothing massages, Bliss can subtly transform any guest’s appearance and relieve post-holiday stress. It’s the perfect start to a new year and a new you!
We often underestimate the impact of our eyebrows. Sometimes they look amazing for no apparent reason; while at other times they resemble a bushy comma right above the eyes. Whether the problem is over-tweezing or waxing, not tweezing or waxing enough, or just tweezing incorrectly, the result is usually a weird shape that does not complement the rest of your look. Maintaining the perfect arch, shape and color can take you from looking just okay to absolutely dazzling in only a few minutes.
Available by appointment or walk-in, Bliss’ trained professionals take into consideration each person’s face shape and arch when performing a brow wax. By doing so, they achieve a natural, polished look that highlights and contours every angle of the face.
As important as outer beauty, is inner well-being. When you don’t feel good on the inside, it’s hard to look your best on the outside. It’s no secret that plenty of sleep, a healthy diet, and a stress-free lifestyle all contribute to appearance. Bliss can not help you get more sleep or eat right, but they can help reduce stress with any of their massages or massage therapy services.
Specializing in Thai Massage, a more energizing and rigorous form of massage, Bliss’ massage therapists use their hands, knees, legs, and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. Muscle compression, joint mobilization, and acupressure are also used during treatment. Thai massage is described as doing yoga, but without any work, and is both relaxing and energizing.
For the month of January, Bliss Nail Spa will offer $15 eyebrow waxing with any service.
Bliss Nail Spa, Houston’s first nail bar, offers the luxury of sipping cocktails during any service in an ultra-hip environment that exudes a stylish and modern ambiance. Trendy music, runway news via plasma screens, and hip cocktails create the perfect spot for a quick lunchtime break or an on-the-way perk-up session. Besides an array of services by appointment, the Nail Bar is available, with dedicated reserved parking spaces, for the impulse types who just want to dash in-and-out for a quick fix before a night on the town. Bliss Nail Spa is a sizzling spot for fun, friends, and fashionable nails.
Bliss Nail Spa is located in the hot Washington Corridor/Heights neighborhood – 701 Shepherd Drive, Houston 77007. For more info call 713-864-8787 or visit www.bliss-nailspa.com. |

surfing on snow
By: Mimi Dinh
Photos: Duc & Trang Au |
Being a water sign (Aquarius), it was natural for me to love any kind of water activity, such as swimming, snorkeling, jet skiing, kite boarding, kayaking, surfing… I also love the sunshine and outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, biking, and running. Snow sports was something that never seemed to appeal to me before due to the climate involved. During the three years of living in Boston before, the winters there were so brutal that the thought of being outside in the miserably freezing, wet cold to do any kind of activity was as appealing as the thought of getting my teeth pulled. The snow made the sky gloomy, the streets dirty and slippery, and the people unfriendly. It wasn’t until we went skiing one Boston winter that slowly changed my mind about snow. Snow on the slopes is much cleaner, fluffier, and a lot more fun than city snow. Even falling flat on your tush from the slopes was not half as painful as when you slip and fall on the icy streets.
This past Thanksgiving, we decided to reunite with two more couples for a winter sports trip in Whistler, Canada. We were excited at the thought of all of us getting together again. They all used to live in Houston, but our lives took one couple to California and another just moved back from living in Russia for five years. We don’t have as many opportunities to get together as we did in the past, so whenever we vacation together, we always have the most memorable times!
Vancouver
Vancouver is a sophisticated, ethnically diversed coastal city and major seaport in British Columbia, Canada. If I could choose to live anywhere in the world, it would be a toss between Vancouver or Portland, Oregon, for their endless outdoor recreation activities due to their mild climate and close proximity to ocean, mountains, and rivers. The scenery is breathless. How many cities can you see the mountains in your backyard and whales swimming out your front door? No wonder Vancouver is consistently ranked one of the three most livable cities in the world. But that’s not it. Vancouver is also a city of seamless public transit system, award-winning cuisine, incredible architecture, and a plethora of entertainment from the arts to the nightlife. And its music scene is bursting out the seam, known for turning out talented artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Bryan Adams, Diana Krall, Michael Bublé, Avril Lavigne, Nickelback, and Sweatshop Union.
My daughter’ school and my husband’s work kept them from joining me at the beginning of this trip, so I decided to see Vancouver on my own. One of my favorite things about traveling is to meet and get to know different people along the way, as well as to try new things. Traveling with your own group is great too, but I always try to have a little time to myself, get out of my ‘safety bubble’ and explore what’s out there. I chose to stay at a boutique hotel - Moda - located at the epicentre of all Downtown Vancouver and Yaletown as to offer. Built in the early 1900s, Moda blended the best of old world style with modern, contemporary interior design, sitting in one of Vancouver's trendier neighborhoods.
Though not a fan of group tours, I wanted to see the famous suspension bridge and thought a tour would give me more convenient transportation and site education. Due to the rain, that tour was cancelled and replaced by the city tour instead. I found myself reluctantly waiting in the hotel lobby for the tour trolley to pick me up early next morning, while schemes were already forming in my head on how to escape the moment I could no longer stand its dullness. Along with 6 more people, we began the tour by taking the glass-enclosed elevator that lifted off to the Vancouver Lookout for spectacular 360 degree views of the coastal mountains, inner harbor, and city skyline. Afterwards, the trolley took us all over the city, exploring the unique neighborhoods of historic Gastown, the new urban Yaletown, and other well-known areas along the way. Consisting of 23 stops in all, the trolley visited the Granville Island market, Canada’s largest Chinatown, Stanley Park and Aquarium, and everywhere in between. Just as I suspected, the tour’s pace was too slow for me, but I decided to relax and make the best of it. The tour finished in 4 hours, leaving me enough time to venture on my own back to Yaletown, enjoying the SoHo atmosphere, surrounded with great bars, restaurants, and unique shops. Granville was a delightful surprise with many cool, modern furniture stores. A big fan of architecture, I returned to Downtown the next day to get a better look at the Harbour Center, Robson Square, the Vancouver Library Square, reminiscent of the Coliseum in Rome, and the Art Deco Marine building, inspired by New York’s Chrysler building, a favorite location for movie shoots.
My favorite place to hang was right at my hotel bar UVA, a cozy little place known for its “enticing cocktails, refined wines, and eclectic import beers”. I fell in love with this charming bar for its ambiance, decor, music, inviting staff, and impeccable service. The setting is ǖberchic, with a staff adorned in all mod black, yet not stuffing where you would feel out of place dining solo. I ordered a yummy potato stuffed ravioli with aged parmesan dish and the best cocktail, an Earl Grey Martini, made with infused Earl Grey tea with a touch of ginger. Delish! UVA even played my kind of music; globally sophisticated, very Hotel Costes. The genre was mostly sexy French tunes by Carla Bruni - a former model turned first lady of France, and lovely music by Adele, a 19 years old British sensation. One friendly bartender - a cute gal with a pixie haircut and glasses à la Lisa Loeb - gave me the 411 on local hot spots, while another – a hot, Ricky Martin look-alike Aussie who spoke perfect French – gave me the lowdown on the music scene in France. I even met a very interesting art dealer there who made me promise to keep in touch after we shared dinner at the bar and spent most of the evening talking about art. Originally from Portugal but residing in Vancouver, she happened to just return from Houston after a Brazilian art installation for the Museum of Fine Arts. I have to say, the people of Vancouver are the nicest in the world - genuine and friendly. Everyone I came in contact with, from the beginning ‘til the end of my trip, was super nice.
Whistler
After a couple days exploring Vancouver, I joined my friends and family as we all piled in two rented vehicles to take us from Vancouver to Whistler Mountain. We booked three suites at the a first-class resort Whistler Hilton, each completed with a full size kitchen so we can all take turns cooking, determined to make our stay a home-away-from-home experience. With an outdoor heated swimming pool, an indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, a sauna, a 24-hour fitness centre, a business centre, a full service spa, divine restaurants, even art galleries; we were impressed with its accommodations.
Besides the facilities inside the hotel, a whole community, consisted of shops, pubs, bars, eateries, and movie theaters, is situated around it. Our sports equipment rental is a few steps away from our hotel, and the gondola ride to the slopes was a few minutes walk. Not wasting any time, we all woke up at six every morning, had a hearty breakfast and hit the slopes.
Our group was divided into two, split between team ski and team snowboard. Always willing to accept a challenge, my husband, daughter, and I decided to give snow boarding a try, taught by our friend and snow board fanatic, Duke. In less than two hours, all three of us were shrieking in delight as we found ourselves surfing across the snow. But let me tell you, it wasn’t easy getting to this point. The bunny slope were closed that day due to lack of snow; so we were learning at the base of the green slope which made things even more difficult, as we had to lug our boards going back uphill after each time we practiced downhill. I can’t count how many times I had to do this without seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Each time my board felt heavier as I dragged it uphill, time and again, feeling exhausted and defeated. Sports have taught me many valuable lessons, such as you don’t always succeed at what you want to do right away, even when you try really hard. I also learned the importance of safety and having the right gears. I am certain that our wrist-guard gloves prevented us from breaking our wrists, and our helmets saved us from having concussions, due to the many nasty falls we endured. With snowboarding, there’s the physical aspect of the sport, which takes skill, focus, coordination – and being in shape definitely helps. Then there’s the psychological side, which requires patience, pushes you to the limit and forces you to confront your fears. But the moment when I first “got it”, the sense of accomplishment was well worth all the hard work and humiliation from my repeated falls while little kids were zipping pass me laughing (I would like to think from them having fun, but at times I could have sworn they were laughing at me).
This is like surfing on snow, except safer, easier to learn, and more fun than surfing in the ocean. When I was surfing in Costa Rica, I was out there in the water all day long only to ride on the board for less than half a dozen times, each time only a few seconds. Although those were some of the best seconds of my life, I spent most of the day waiting for the perfect waves while getting abused by the force of board and drank a lot of water from my falls. With snowboarding, all you need is the snow and board, and off you go. Once you are on the board, you can surf on snow for a long time. And if you fall, you just get up, dust yourself off and go again. No need to wait for the right wave to come like water surf.
What I also love about this sport is its “freedom of expression”. An individual approach is the key so you can have your own style without worrying about doing it by the book. I enjoyed watching dudes showing off their moves - flipping their boards in the air, twisting and jumping - as much as being on the board myself. I beamed with pride seeing my eleven-year old daughter on that board, looking cool and confident doing her own thing, having the time of her life. We knuckle-touched as we passed each other and bonded as we shared the lift back to the slope, giggling the whole time as we were telling our own funny “slope” stories.
Our group was such sports junkies that we stuffed our pockets with power bars to avoid wasting time going to the cafeteria for lunch. Everyday by closing time, we were always the last to leave. While folks were getting in line for the gondolas to take them back to their resorts, our group was at the base trying to get our last fix of snowboarding or skiing until the patrol guys had to flag us to get out of there.
When we returned to our hotel after a full day of fun, while most folks went to the local pubs for an après ski drink, our group had better ways to spend our après ski – by soaking our achy and bruised bodies in the outdoor Jacuzzi, followed by a dip in the heated pool, and finally sweating together in the sauna, exchanging stories of our first day on the slopes. We followed our noses to one of our suites to find a hot, delicious home-cooked dinner waiting for us, thanks to one of our friends. She was not as into snowboarding as her husband, so everyday by lunch time she would take the gondola back to the hotel and cooked us all kinds of yummy dishes: beef stew, coq au vin, chopped steaks, and hamburger. When you vacation with friends, a certain intimacy forms that you might not be able to replicate in other ways. It gives you opportunities to open up, let your hair down, dig deeper. We got to know our friends in different layers because of the intimacy we shared from these trips. Each evening as we took turns hosting dinner in each other’s hotel suite - the kids were all in one room eating while watching a movie or playing some games, and we adults were gathering in the kitchen enjoying our home- cooked meal over a glass of wine - the same thought was running through our heads: “It doesn’t get any better than this!” Not a bad way to spend Thanksgiving indeed.
As our trip to Whistler came to an end, I found myself not wanting to leave. So many great memories in such a short time, but all good things have to come to an end. While we were sad to leave, we were excited to have found a new recreation that our family could enjoy together. Wasting no time, we have already changed our New Years plans from going to New York after a family reunion in DC, to hitting the slopes once again, this time in Liberty Mountain, a two-hour drive from D.C. But first, no more rentals! We’ll need to shop for our own snowboarding equipment because looks like this cool sport is here to stay in our household.

| top 10 home decor trends for 2009 |
Murals Your Way - More and more Americans today are looking at their homes as a place of refuge in a stressful world of challenges and economic instability. Instead of going out to dinner or social events, they're cocooning with their families. Now, more than ever, their homes need to be restful and soothing, yet stylish at the same time.
Here are their top 10 home decor trends for 2009:
1. Color Your World
Colors will literally be across the spectrum next year. On their Web site, the Pantone Color Institute forecasts lively colors and sophisticated, grounded hues with Fuchsia Red, Salmon Rose, Palace Blue, Lavender, Rose Dust and Vibrant Green predicted to be popular.
Andrea Vollf, American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), believes strongly in "transforming an ordinary home into a living oasis" using neutrals, especially warm and cool grays, along with bold accent pieces. Deep shades of blue are in demand by customers of Jan Hubbard, ASID, and Candice Mathers, Allied Member of ASID, with Hubbard also noting a draw to spice, bisque, toast and green/gold tones to create a warm ambiance. On a brighter note, both Mathers and Susan Pantaleo, ASID, see yellow emerging as a very versatile color.
2. Light up Your Life
Because residential interiors are incorporating more intense paint colors -- not only as accent walls, but throughout an entire room -- more light is needed to properly illuminate a room. According to Jeff Dross, senior product manager of Kichler Lighting, lighting manufacturers will introduce chandeliers with more arms or multiple lights per arm, as well as pendants and wall-mounted fixtures that accept higher-wattage bulbs.
3. We've Got You Covered
Wall murals will continue to be in high demand in 2009, according to Todd Imholte, president of www.MuralsYourWay.com a leader in the production of decorative wall murals for more than 35 years. "Wall murals are a very cost-effective way to completely transform the look of a room," says Imholte. "We recently introduced 90 new mural designs including bold graphic patterns, contemporary designs and murals inspired by nature such as birch trees and bamboo." Murals Your Way offers a gallery of more than 5,000 images, as well as the ability to personalize an existing gallery image or create a custom mural from a personal photo or artwork.
4. Establishing a Pattern
In a press release distributed earlier this year, Michelle Lamb -- co-founder and chairman of Marketing Directions, Inc. and senior editor of "The Trend Curve" -- stated that patterns are being constantly updated and reinvented. Some ways to keep them fresh include combining classic and contemporary styles in one piece; utilizing tiny, country patterns that include calico or patchwork; and trying distinctive materials, like foil, or embellishments that cluster and layer upon each other.
5. Comfort is Key
Vollf sees 2009 as being the year of comfort, with furniture that is comfortable and functional, yet still elegant. More and more people are interested in creating a personal refuge that is chic, peaceful, inviting and easy to maintain so that they can relax and unwind at the end of a busy day in an aesthetically pleasing environment.
6. Wood is Good
According to Kathy Peterson -- celebrity design expert and co-host of Lifetime TV's "The Balancing Act" -- wood flooring is blending into an eclectic mix of wood tones. She also forecasts hardwood wall coverings (wood, resin, metals) with seamless panels of custom designs becoming focal points of a room. Dross echoes the popularity of wood throughout the home, seeing floors, walls, ceilings (bead board) and furniture incorporating wood at their center.
7. Shining Stars
Metals will continue to shine next year, according to Lamb. She envisions them being translated into modern metallic finishes and textures that create a sense of visual excitement and high energy. Particularly noteworthy are platinum, dark silver, rose golds and copper, and colorful metallics.
8. Hooray for Hollywood
Carmen Natschke -- editor of "The Decorating Diva" -- sees a revival of what she calls "Hollywood Regency." According to her Web site, this style is "glamorous, classy and elegant; composed of an eclectic mix of styles like Neo-Classic, Asian, Baroque and Art Deco; sumptuous and luxury fabrics, shimmering finishes, mirrored furniture, chinoiserie, bamboo and lacquered furniture; bold color; clean lines and beautiful symmetry."
9. Embrace the Outdoors
Seamless transitions from indoor to outdoor space are envisioned by Pantaleo, who says the most successful outdoor spaces will be an extension of the home's interior style and color scheme. Using nature as a backdrop, she suggests pulling colors from adjacent rooms to maintain a visual connection. She also recommends accessorizing gourmet cook centers and plasma televisions with weather-resistant chandeliers, rugs and artwork to create a cozy, appealing and relaxed ambiance.
10. Go Green
Eco-friendly products will continue to be in demand by today's energy-conscious and environmentally-aware consumers. McKinley Adams, Allied member of ASID, predicts consumers will be interested in sustainable building materials that may cost a bit more up front, but will save money in the long run. He also sees a surge of interest in vintage furnishings for inside the home, while Mathers anticipates increased use of grass cloth and natural Sisal finishes.

| bliss in the city: cosmos, pampering & girl talk |
OMG...Bliss on Shepherd is a spa after my own heart. I swear that if Sex in the City was located in Houston, Carrie and her girl pals would be hanging out there and sipping on cosmos.
This is because Bliss is not just a spa. It's a nail bar!
Okay, for those of you who haven't been to a nail bar, you really have to go. Not only do you get all the traditional spa services like massages, manicures, pedicures and facials, but you can enjoy a glass a wine, a martini or freshly roasted coffee while you are being pampered. How cool is that?
THE BUSY GIRL'S
HAPPY HOUR
The first thing you'll notice when you walk into Bliss is the design. It's open, spacious and beautiful. In fact, the lobby is not a waiting area, but a chic and happening lounge, where you can get your nails done while hanging out with friends.
"Girls can drop in, have a cocktail and catch up with their lives, while getting some pampering done," said Nancy, co-owner of Bliss.
Nancy and Nick Nikolovski are the owners of the Bliss, which is Houston's first nail bar.
They wanted a place where people could come and relax after work or on an afternoon.
With any service, customers can get up to two complementary drinks of their choice -- ranging from Cosmos, appletinis and other cocktails, to wine, coffee and tea. They also serve mimosas on Sunday.
"We wanted to pilot a new concept with Bliss and create a social environment," said Nick. "We have all the traditional spa amenities, too, but then the nail bar brings out something different."
They also do a lot of SPArties (spa parties) such as baby showers, bridal parties and birthdays.
"One SPArty that we had was for a 10-year-old girl. Nancy helped them learn how to make bath balls with salt and different scents. It was fun and very entertaining," said Nick.
But if you don't want to hang out in the lounge, Bliss also has a private suite where couples or a group of friends can get together and enjoy some quality time.
"We have a group that comes in to watch Lipstick Jungle on the flat screen in the suite. The girls get their nails done, relax with a cocktail and then watch the show together and chat," said Nick.
MIAMI MEETS EUROPE
Before opening Bliss, Nancy and Nick were basically spa connoisseurs. They had been to spas all over the world and spent some time in Miami. They knew as a customer what they liked and what was missing.
"I started Bliss for almost selfish reasons. I was tired of going to high-end spas and wondering how clean they were," said Nancy.
They had been thinking about the concept of Bliss for a while, but what really set the ball into motion was a scare Nancy got after visiting a spa.
"I thought I got an infection from a spa. It turned out to be nothing, but after that I didn't want to worry about how clean the tools were. I decided I would open my own place and make sure everything was up to my standards," said Nancy.
Nancy works in the healthcare industry so she said they went all out when it came to sterilization and cleanliness.
Nancy said that at Bliss, they don't reuse anything, and they have a medical grade sterilizer. Their whirlpool footbaths are also state-of-the-art. They are pipeless so the water is not recycled.
"Our staff has a three-step process. They soak, manually scrub and then sterilize all the tools," said Nancy. "Plus we have a designated Clean Cop."
SLIP INTO BLISS WITH DAILY DEALS
So are you ready to go all Sex in the City with cosmos and fabulous nails? I know I am. The only problem is trying to figure out which night to go on because Bliss has some great specials:
Early Bird Specials: Come in before 2 p.m. during the week and get a mani-pedi for $55 (regularly $70)
BYOB (bring your own boy) Tuesdays: This is like Guys Night Out because your guy friend will get 10% off any service.
Girls night out Thursdays: Get any service and get your eyebrows done for just $15.
They also have gift certificates that you can purchase online and some fun stocking stuffers in the store for the spa-lover on your list.
INSIDE BLISS SCOOP
While the daily deals are great, I really can't wait for February. That's because Nancy and Nic let me in on a little secret, that of course, I will share with you...
"In February, we are planning to kick off a wine tasting night co-hosted by local wine bars," said Nancy. The first Girls Night Wine Tasting will be on Thursday, February 5th, from 6 to 8 PM. Other Girls Night Wine Tasting events will be held every first Thursday of the month after this kick off event.
Wine tasting and manicures with some girlfriends? Now that sounds like fun!

| domestic art: curated interiors |
Domestic Art: Curated Interiors, published by Assouline, launching October 5, is a true showcase on living with the lavishly sublime, and decorating with eccentric assemblages and moody modernism, all in exquisite taste.
Edited by HOLLY MOORE, editor in chief of PaperCity.
Produced and written by ROB BRINKLEY co-editor PaperCity;
LAURANN CLARIDGE, features editor PaperCity.
Domestic Art: Curated Interiors captures a mind-set, piques a curiosity to look at things anew, appreciate oddities and revel in uniqueness and personal work. It’s a loopy but sublime drawing-room comedy with ghosts of dandies and soulful poets and style aesthetes … all lounging, sipping and chattering away in 18th-century châteaux inserted into downtown lofts, whitewashed shotgun houses filled with Twomblys and Rauschenbergs, and dark-as-a-hedgehog tiny Tudors.
The selected houses in this book were pulled from the pages of PaperCity, from the years 2000 to 2008. Roughly a decade of design alchemy and clinking highballs. The editors of this book foraged for both the musty and gutsy and the soaring and sensual, from a 500-square-foot bedsit to a mid-century organic architectural wonder – thirty seven glorious projects, from follies to disciplined mansions, from Dominique and John de Menil’s International-style house with its interior by the great couturier Charles James to artist Christian Eckart’s abandoned 1940s warehouses polished to gleaming architectural wonder. Marvel at a compound of rescued, early-1900s clapboards, and an 1880s German-immigrant cottage. We’ve included a ’50s masterwork by the great organic architect Bruce Goff, and an industrial space that crackles with own surreal designs, while a chalet-style 1913 bungalow manifests the best bits and pieces of the past. A turn-of-the-century seaside gingerbread is a study in anthropology peppered with good art; an antiquarian aims his cerebral arrows at Louis this and Louis that, then electrifies it all with saturated color; and an 18th-century château and an old-world hunting lodge is installed in a downtown loft space. Meanwhile, a stylish gent sips scotch neat in his Scotch Room, watched over by two mounted deer, a pheasant and a wildebeest.

“Another wonderful year of professional achievement…congratulations! I hope that every company in Houston adopts your meaningful way to celebrate: acknowledging hard work and plentiful blessings by sharing with those in adverse circumstances with scarce glimpses of hope. We were so pleased that your guests and sponsors enthusiastically and generously joined you in this celebration. quote of the
month
“009 will be a challenging year for many businesses as the economy continues to slow down. During this time, many companies panic and make the mistake of cutting marketing budgets, when they should instead make their marketing dollars work harder for them. In previous downturns, companies that have continued to market themselves have proven to be prospered in the end. The question should not be whether their marketing budgets should be cut, but it should be, rather, how to get maximum value from their budgets.”
