pagoda vietnamese bistro & bar rang in the lunar new year
Photos by Mona Lopez

On Friday, January 23, Pagoda Vietnamese Bistro & Bar brought in the New Year with a riveting celebration. Guests were welcomed by the owners of Pagoda, Sandy Tran and Ester Thomas, and a bevy of entertainment throughout the posh restaurant. The Vietnamese New Year or “Tet” celebration included a DJ, origami demo, fortune telling, casino games, and much more.

Tet is the abbreviation of Tet Nguyen Dan, which means the first morning of the first day of the new period. Tet marks the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar, and the beginning of spring. As Vietnamese areconstantly aware of the phases of the moon, all events are planned by the lunar calendar. The New Year begins on the first night of the first moon, after the sun enters Aquarius. This is usually between January 21 and February 19 on the solar calendar.

Sponsored by Yellow Magazine and Saigon Texas News, this incredible party continued to amaze the many guests with a number of astonishing surprises, such as a special appearance and autograph signing by the beautiful Asian models featured in the 2009 Hope Initiative calendar.

Hope Initiative’s
2009 Calendar was on sale for $15 each throughout the entire night; all proceeds benefited Hope Initiative, whose mission is to develop vibrant and prosperous Vietnamese communities in Vietnam and abroad through poverty reduction, child development, and community enrichment programs (www.hionline.org). Surprising guests once again was a show-stopping dragon dance provided by Lend-a-Hand, a Vietnamese youth organization developed to aid impoverished children in Vietnam (www.lendahand.org). The electrifying performance captured the attention of everyone present with fire-throwing and amazing, live percussion. Everyone watched as the performers paraded the floor with contagious energy and passion.

While the guests were enjoying the exquisite atmosphere that Pagoda Vietnamese Bistro & Bar consistently offers, they were served with delectable hors d’oeuvres and mai-tinis on passing trays, while Asian models, wearing a traditional “ao dai,” walked around reading fortune telling sticks to guests.

Pagoda Vietnamese Bistro and Bar is making an epicurean impact in the Houston Heights. The recently opened restaurant embraces high style with a laid back attitude, making every dining experience unforgettable. Their full menu, equal in quality to even the most traditional Vietnamese cuisine, offers everything from mouth-watering vermicelli noodle bowls, to exquisite Lemongrass Lamb. With its critically-acclaimed new menu, stylish lounge area, private upstairs banquet facilities, a happening Happy Hour, and DJ spinning, come and experience first hand what the buzz is all about.

after hours business networking
The Afterhour Business Cocktail is a European joint event which regularly brings members of several European Chambers of Commerce and Business Associations to increase networking and business opportunities.

On January 27, the French, German, Italian, Chambers of Commerce and the NTBA invited members and friends to network and relax in the beautiful wine cellar room of the Tasting Room, in Uptown Park. It was an incredible event and such a high turn-out that they had to close the registration desk after only an hour! Maureen Donovan, Attorney At Law and prospective member, says “The event was a vast array of international flavors last night! A culturally unique event like that brings people an energy that they just don’t show when they are on their own. When they are surrounded by their own culture, their own language and they feel the support of the community, people are a lot more energetic. It’s nice to see. It’s wonderful for us to have a network like that. People are members, friends, clients and coworkers and the event is just more intense together.”

The French-American Chamber of Commerce is happy to welcome guests next week to their annual meeting and cocktail party at Le Mistral, an exquisite French restaurant located on Eldridge Parkway. It will be a large networking cocktail in a relaxed setting where you can learn more about our activities, events and trade services. Guests will also have the chance to meet our honoree for the 2009 FACC Benefit Gala, Mr. Giuseppe Risi, Managing Director of the Reigning American Le Mans Series GT Champions - racing the Ferrari 430 GT, and President of Ferrari Maserati of Houston. The gala will be held on Saturday, May 16 at the Intercontinental Houston Hotel.

a few good lawyers
Being a lawyer is supposed to be an honorable profession. So why is it that the general public doesn’t think so? People like to bash lawyers but who are you going to call if someone causes you serious harm or abuses your rights? Had it not been for trial lawyers, there would be no justice, no restitution, no public disclosures of illegality and abuse. Regardless of the quality of their work, many lawyers find themselves defending their moral fiber just because of what they do. The challenge is for them to change that perception, to turn it around by developing a positive image that overcomes the negative. While there are always some bad seeds in this field, there are also a few good ones. Former councilman Rob Todd is one of them - although he doesn’t consider himself a “good” lawyer, in its traditional definition, but rather an “effective” one. “An effective lawyer is one that will either get on the turf and scrap, or put on the charm when needed,” says Mr. Todd. “An effective attorney knows when to take either approach. ‘Good’ lawyers are too busy reading and billing to get anything done promptly.”

Licensed for 17 years, Rob Todd would rather trust his instincts to get the job done, changing the lives of his clients one case at a time, while changing the perception of lawyers one step at a time. So what does it take to be successful and respected in this demanding field? In his answers below, Mr. Todd gives us a closer look at his roles as a lawyer, father, and public servant.

Please describe what your firm does, its specialty: My law firm represents small and medium sized companies with the things that a general counsel would do if they had one. I try cases, negotiate deals, and do a substantial amount of governmental relations. I also run a real estate development company that is limited to the development of telecommunications infrastructure. I like the idea of helping people communicate more effectively.

What do you like most about your job? Finding solutions to impossible problems, or seeing a client happy with the result.

Who are your target clients? Those that have almost given up (and who pay on thirty days).

What challenges do you face in your business? My biggest challenge is encouraging business owners to remain positive and plan for the future. I like to see my friends and clients happy and optimistic. I tend to be a bit of a counselor with my clients. I like to get to know my clients.

Do you think there is a misconception about lawyers, or do they deserve their reputation? Yes and no. Lawyers are a lot like surgeons: A knife in the right hands does a lot of good, and a knife in the wrong hands can do a lot of harm. The main problem facing the profession is that there is a lack of mentoring.

Has the slow economy affected your work? It hasn’t affected the volume, but it has affected the type of work flow I see. For example, I see an upswing in the volume of collections cases these days as well as a substantial amount of unraveling (or consolidating) of business deals. The good news is that my clients are, by and large, still hard at work and are preparing for the next financial wave to ride. We all just need to have our guard up for a little while.

Do you travel a lot outside of Houston? Where? With technology where it is today, the only reason for me to travel and make a personal appearance is when I have to close a deal or to appear in court. If it’s routine, I have no business spending my client’s money on an unnecessary trip. Besides, I value my family time, so I’m killing two birds with one stone.

Describe a day in the life of Rob Todd: That’s easy; phone in my ear, sometimes two; reading, writing, meeting, or closing a deal. I used to have more time to relax. These days, I have to remember to have lunch or a glass of water. I’m with a client, a judge, opposing counsel, a telecom provider, or a banker all day long....frequently with phones in both ears.

You used to serve as councilman for the city; what was that experience like? I loved it. Everybody should give back at some point. Perhaps it is a result of my father’s service in the military and my mother’s service in supporting him there, but I am a big believer in public service.

Will you run for office again? If yes, what position and when: Probably; I loved the public interaction, the problem solving, and the political battles. Every once in a while; a good leader can manage to get something done. There is nothing that feels better than that, even when you are serving with a public body that tends to have a high egomaniac factor. The specific position I would seek really depends on timing, both politically and in my personal life. My family will always come first, and I am mindful that Houston prefers its leaders to come out of the business world. I feel at home in city politics. The local ethnic stew is amazing, the people are hard working, and the business climate is nearly perfect! I regret the lack of free, outdoor venues for exercise, meditation, and family gatherings.

What fun things do you do when you are not working? I love exercising and have found that it helps me find balance in my day and in my life.  There is something about it that creates a type of Zen....and the harder I run, ride or swim, the better.  Of course, that leads to a huge appetite.  I'm a total foodie and love our great restaurants as well as a home cooked meal.  There is definitely no place like home.

What is your favorite drink? Kombucha by day, for sure. I’m a big believer in it. At night, I love the Vodkas coming out of Texas and the Malbec wines out of Argentina.

What qualities do you most value in a business associate? In a friend? Partnership, responsibility, and honesty are the keys to any relationship. Whether you are in the boardroom or the living room, you have to have all three.

Who is your role model? Why? I know this sounds corny, but I really admire my fiancé, Chau Nguyen. She pulled herself up by her bootstraps, excelled in her profession, and has never stopped learning. I’m really impressed with her. She rocks. Frankly, I wish she would run for city council. She would be very good at it.

What are your future plans? My future plans are to take care of my family and my business, find more time for spirituality, train, and to find more time to travel. I believe in balance, and that pretty much sums it up in my book.

My family: All in Seattle; my friends are my family here

My passion: Anything I can do with my friends or family.

I can’t live without: My blackberry.

I am most proud of: My kids.

I am guilty of: Snacking all day like a rat.

Right now I’m listening to: Silence; isn’t it golden?

Last major purchase: Jewelry

The nickname I wish I had: Already have it: The Whirlwind

My theme song: Aaron Copeland, Fanfare for the Common Man

If I could do it all over again: Maybe I’d breath a little more.

My favorite physical part: My energy level; wherever that comes from.

The food I could eat every day is: Banh Cuon; it’s Vietnamese ravioli. You’ll love it.

If I were a superhero I would be: Ferdinand the bull.

My favorite blog: Pinkgurugal.com

My favorite destination: Haleiwa, North Shore Oahu, preferably in Winter

My best friend says I am: A “putz”...how rude!

I still can’t get the hang of: Dancing; I dance very white, apparently

I wish I’d known: Nothing....I love surprises.

The world would be a better place if: We all learned to listen better.

I’d like to learn to: Speak a dozen more languages.

I’d like to meet: Margaret Thatcher

Something most people don’t know about me: I know what you are about to say most of the time.

The smartest woman/man I know: My dad.

My first Job: Picking berries in Oregon; 2 cents a container.

mike epps & friends: 2009 valentine's day comedy explosion
Def Comedy Jam phenomenon and co-star of films Next Friday, All About The Benjamins and The Fighting Temptations, Mike Epps comes to Houston's Arena Theatre for the 2009 Valentine's Day Comedy Explosion, February 14, 2009

Mike Epps grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he shared a house with five siblings and his mother. He was a troublemaking class clown who admitted to spending four months in a juvenile center after a prank involving Super Glue.

Epps entered a stand-up comedy contest at an Indiana club called Seville's. His success on stage gave him the courage to strike out on his own and move to Atlanta where he began making a name for himself at the Comedy Act Theater.

The owner of the club suggested Epps move to New York to build his act, and within a week, Epps caught a Greyhound to Manhattan; he was 21 years old. While breaking into the city's conventional comedy clubs proved difficult, the Def Comedy Jam phenomenon stimulated an underground black comedy scene in which Epps excelled.

who says your wardrobe has to be in a recession, too?
Not I! Times are tough but we still want to look and feel great without breaking the bank. And those who really understand fashion know that a lot of money is not necessary for great style or an enviable closet.

Most of you know me from my boutique, Frock, which I closed recently. I am happy to announce that I'm venturing into personal styling and wardrobe/closet consulting. Although I'm no longer buying for a store, I'm now available to you personally and at an affordable hourly rate.

I started my first fashion business over 7 years ago, importing up-and-coming designer's creations from Milan and then in 2005 I opened Frock. These valuable endeavors, which taught me so much, along with my fashion expertise and organizational skills make this a natural fit.

In times like these it is ideal to optimize what you already own by repairing, altering or remaking garments, or by simply filling in some pieces to make your look current.  Even adding a statement piece of jewelry may be all that's needed for a lift. You will be amazed at how far your wardrobe (and dollar) can stretch! But the absolute best thing about getting organized is how your mind also becomes clean; our closets and drawers can be symbolic of what's going on in our heads and in our lives.

I am pleased to offer the following services:

* Closet cleansing/wardrobe consultation
* Personal shopping
* Travel wardrobe shopping and/or packing
* Special event outfit coordination and/or shopping
* Outfit coordination

My fee for closet/drawer reorganization is $50 per hour with a 2 hour minimum. For all other services the fee is $40 per hour with a 1 hour minimum. I am flexible, with availability during the week and on weekends. Please feel free to pass this on to your friends and family.

the plains of mars
The Plains of Mars: European War Prints, 1500-1825, from the Collection of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation

Centuries before television coverage forever transformed the public’s perception of war, earlier technology – printmaking, in the late 15th century – brought war, for the first time, to the general public. This is the first large-scale exhibition to survey the overall theme of war and peace in the early-modern period of printmaking.

During the years covered in this exhibition (c. 1495-c. 1825), Europe remained in an almost perpetual state of conflict. Religion, politics, economics, and dynastic ambition all played a role in the turmoil that spread across the Continent.

The Plains of Mars comprises approximately 100 engravings, woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and aquatints by artists including Dürer, Goya, Goltzius, and Géricault, drawn entirely from the collection of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation, administered by the MFAH. Many works from this foundation are permanently exhibited in five galleries in the Beck Building of the MFAH.

maurizio cattelan at the menil collection
Contemporary Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan is known for his witty embrace of semantic shifts that result from imaginative plays with materials, objects, and actions. In his work, contradictions in the space between what the artist describes as softness and perversity wage a sarcastic critique on political power structures, from notions of nationalism or the authorities of organized religion to the conceit of the museum and art history. Like the traditions established by Dada and Surrealism, his uncanny juxtapositions uproot stable understandings of the world around us. For Cattelan even the banal is absurd. As he has said, “Comedians manipulate and make fun of reality. Whereas I actually think that reality is far more provocative than my art.”

The exhibition at The Menil Collection, organized by Franklin Sirmans, curator of modern and contemporary art, will be the artist’s first solo show in Texas. The exhibition will focus on recent large-scale work that premiered in Europe in 2007 and will feature sculptures that range in tone from the melancholic and politically contentious to the decidedly irreverent.

On display will be Cattelan’s monumental and unsettling memento mori, Untitled, 2007, a suspended taxidermied horse with its head buried in the wall. The exhibition will also include Ave Maria, 2007, a series of saluting arms that extend from the wall. The translated title “Hail Mary” remains intentionally ambiguous, much like the various cultural meanings conjured up by gestures of allegiance.

WASHINGTON, DC:
Planning our annual family reunion with four families took some serious thoughts this past holiday. After our snowboarding trip to Whistler, my husband, daughter and I were all itching to get our fix once again before the season was over. Wanting to kill two birds with one stone, we joined our families in DC for the reunion and were able to see my nephew (who was just born a couple of months ago), spend time with our loved ones, enjoy exquisite home cooked meals by my mother-in-law, and sneak in some snowboarding toward the end of our trip. While I would love to give you every detail about each place we went, I will spare you and just hit the highlights….

Hotel George
Everything about this city screams politics. The most popular clothing colors are red or navy. The hottest shoes are Ferragamo pumps. The most popular labels are Chanel and Valentino for diplomats wives, and Brooks Brothers and Britches for the Capital crowd. Being ‘hip” is not the goal here; being “powerful” is. The most popular places to stay are the Hay Adams and the Willard.

I guess we weren’t part of the “in crowd” because we chose to stay at a very “hip” hotel. Walking into Hotel George, a cozy boutique hotel, I knew my family and I were in for a treat. Built in 1929, the historic hotel is a true icon of fashion and hospitality. The chic, eco-friendly hotel is perfectly positioned for business or sightseeing in the nation's capital. This hotel is totally my style, modern, sophisticated, with plenty of character and edge. But its location was why we booked it in the first place. Tucked away on Capitol Hill’s business district, adjacent to the U.S. Capitol, The Hotel George is a short walk from DC’s many exciting destinations, attractions and landmarks like Union Station, the National Mall and Smithsonian Museums, U.S. Supreme Court, Verizon Center, International Spy Museum, National Gallery of Art, Nationals Stadium and The White House.

One of my most unforgettable memories from DC happened while I was on my morning jog. Each day, my husband, nephew, and I would run laps around the National Mall for about an hour, from Lincoln Memorial to the Capital. Running is extremely therapeutic for me, and an excellent way to stay in shape while I travel since it requires no gear; just a pair of running shoes and off I go. One freezing morning, my jog was going as usual, when all of the sudden I felt tons snow flakes tapping on my shoulders. I looked up, snapped out of my usual deep thoughts, and noticed that the sky started turning dark gray and the snow began swirling right before my eyes, like a cyclone or tornado. It was exciting and crazy at the same time. But, the craziest thing was that while everyone else had vanished, we were the only three nuts left in the park; kept charging ahead like there was no tomorrow. Then as fast as it began, the “mini snow storm” stopped after only 10 minutes. Just one of nature’s miracles, I guess. When we finished our usual one-hour run, we beamed with victory as we high-fived each other for sticking it out during that surreal force of nature. Talk about running fools!

Hirshhorn Museum
As many of you already know, I’m an art lover, so I was in heaven surrounded by so many top museums within walking distance of each other; and best of all, they’re all free. As soon as my daughter and I walked into the Hirshhorn Museum, I was like a kid in a candy store. I walked the halls in what seemed like a trance; I was simply in awe, even though this was not my first visit. In almost every direction, inspiring pieces of work consumed the hallways. All of my favorite artists (Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, and Kelly Ellsworth) were featured in this museum.

The Hirshhorn Museum collects, preserves, and presents international modern and contemporary art in all media, distinguished by in-depth holdings of major artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. On each level, the museum featured a different exhibit. My favorite had to be The Panza Collection. Featuring paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, film, and wall drawings, The Panza Collection shows the notable diversity of approaches that flourished in the mid-twentieth century.

National Building Museum
Architecture is another passion of mine. It’s captivating to me to see how creativity, design, planning, and functionality can be combined to create magnificent and inspiring buildings. This museum is known for its unique exhibitions addressing fascinating topics often overlooked by other institutions. Some exhibits explore the work of innovative architects like Frank Lloyd Wright to cutting edge, contemporary practitioners like Zaha Hadid. The museum is also a resource for and advocate of sustainable design. Knowing this, I had to see the Green Community, an exhibit that explores “sustainable development.”

The Green Community depicted the origins of our ecological situation and showcased communities where citizens, political leaders, planning/design professionals, developers, and government agencies are working together for a more sustainable future.

A believer in “green living” myself, it was definitely a motivating attraction. I only wish Houston could adopt a few of the many sustainable strategies these communities are using to better our city’s quality of life.

Museum gift shops in DC are among the best places to find unique gift items such as books, clothing, jewelry, videos, crafts, decorative arts, toys and more. The National Building Museum Gift Shop maintains a superior reputation and is often referred to as the best museum gift shop in DC. It was even selected for the 2008 Best of Washington Award in the Gift Shops category by the U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA).

United States Botanic Garden
In order to change things up a little, we strayed from the museums one day and decided to visit the United States Botanic Garden, a garden run by Congress. It is located on the U.S. Capitol Grounds campus near Garfield Circle. The building itself, which includes the Lord & Burnham greenhouse, is divided into separate rooms, each simulating a different habitat. Because it was winter while we were there, the flowers in bloom included Poinsettia Sonoras, Cradle orchid Anguloas, Amaryllis Salmon Beauties, Gardenias, Calanthe Rubens and Orchids, among others. Though the flowers were absolutely beautiful, what caught my attention most was the aroma. Each room was filled with the delightful bouquet of fresh flowers; if only my garden could look and smell that great!

National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art, located on the National Mall, is DC’s largest and most notable museum and houses one of the finest collections of Western painting and sculpture in the world. What made it so interesting to me and my family was the history that surrounded it. Beginning in the 1920s, financier and art collector Andrew W. Mellon began gathering a collection of old master paintings and sculptures with the goal of providing the country with a national art gallery. Following his death in 1937, Congress accepted Mellon's collection and building funds, and approved the construction of a museum on the National Mall.

A substantial art collection and more than 2,000 sculptures, paintings, pieces of decorative art were more than enough pieces to fill the museum.

After our promenade from wing to wing in this museum, it was impossible for us to pass up their three incredible gift shops. The West Building Shop offers a bevy of reproductions including ready-to-hangs, elegant jewelry, accessories, and giftware. Situated in the underground concourse, the Bookstore features gallery publications as well as a large selection of books on art, architecture, photography, and other art-related subjects. Across from the Bookstore is the Children's Shop, which offers an assortment of gifts to inspire creativity—art supplies, books, games, and toys. I had no idea you could find such great shopping in a museum. I ended up leaving with a Mark Rothko poster and several art-inspired knick-knacks.

LIBERTY MOUNTAIN:
A two-hour drive from Washington DC, Liberty Mountain is not a typical first choice when people think of a ski resort. But we couldn’t be happier when we found out about it since it was the most convenient way for my family to fit in some snowboarding while in DC for our annual family reunion. We didn’t care that his was a man-made ski resort, nor did it bother us that the hotel we were staying at was nowhere near as glamorous as our last ski resort in Whistler, Canada. Liberty Mountain Resort & Conference Center made up its lack of luxury accommodations by its convenience. We literally stepped out of the hotel lobby door into the slopes.

Located on 275 acres, Liberty Mountain offered plenty of space to play and countless activities to choose from. The Carroll Valley Resort championship golf course was located next door, as well as several additional courses within a few miles drive. For hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, the Appalachian Trail and Catoctin Mountain State Park were nearby. There were even nearby shopping options, including a multitude of antique shops, the Gettysburg Outlet Center, and Boyd’s Bear Country. Event though there was so much to do, we really spent the majority of our time snowboarding.

With only two full days to snowboard, we used the first day to just have fun on the slopes, review the basics, show off each others tricks, and ultimately just enjoy ourselves.

During our second day of snowboarding, I decided to take a short, one-hour class to better my skills. The one-on-one attention I received from the lesson was just what I needed to nail the toe and heel turns. We all did both the green and blue slopes, finding that they were much less challenging than even the green slopes in Whistler. I’m glad we were able to review and practice our techniques here because, despite our painful falls from the thin, man-made snow, the shallow slopes were perfect for beginners like us.

A unique feature about Liberty Mountain is that their slopes are open all day until 10PM. We immediately fell in love with boarding in the evening, as the lights sparkled on the snow, and the atmosphere changed from a loud and energetic vibe, to a more serene, romantic ambiance. As we snuggled up sharing the lift high above the ground, the scene below unveiled an endless palette of emotion that woke up all my senses: the echoes of laughter, the moonlight, the smell of winter, the intimacy, the peaceful serenity, blending with the faint sound of blades swishing on the snow gave the place such raw beauty, the whole experience was breathtaking.

Our action-packed weekend on the slopes had finally come to an end. The twelve hours of daily snowboarding from dawn ‘til dusk made our two-day boarding equivalent to four – woohoo! I hope my in-laws don’t take this the wrong way, but this Liberty Mountain trip made the early departure from our family reunion worthwhile.

This entire trip became even more significant to me after we got home. Only a couple weeks had past when I found myself watching the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, taking place right on the familiar National Mall. To know that I had just jogged in the very place our first African American president took his oath is very thrilling for me. On top of that, my birthday this year happened to fall on inauguration day. How incredible is that? Go Obamarama!

houston weighs in on new ways to recycle green debris
Mayor Bill White announced today the three winning ideas from the Recycle Ike contest for new ways to recycle green debris and keep it out of our landfills.  The City of Houston has collected over 5 million cubic yards of green debris resulting from Hurricane Ike and has directed significant amounts to mulch and composting applications.  The purpose of the contest is to help develop new markets for recycled green debris to deal with volume spikes from storms like Ike as well as the area’s on-going vegetative and woody waste trash collection.

“We need to keep this waste out of our landfills and coming up with new markets for recycling green material is good for our region, both environmentally and economically” said Mayor Bill White.  “I am impressed with the caliber of ideas coming from the Recycle Ike contest.”

Some 208 proposals were submitted to the online contest from six different countries and 33 different states.  Five judges from the private and public sector included a successful renewable energy entrepreneur, a venture capitalist, a green material recycler, a climate change expert, and the city’s sustainability director.  The top ideas were selected based on originality, practicality, and sustainability.

The winning ideas are:

  • First Place:  Biochar
    • Team: Rice University group led by Bill Hockaday
  • Second Place:  Bioreactor Sand Pits
    • Team:  Samuel Weaver
  • Third Place:  Houston Farm Corps
    • Team: Ian Ragsdale

The sponsor for the Recycle Ike contest is Living Earth, a local mulching and green debris recycling company.  The first place team will receive $10,000, the second place team will receive $5,000, and the third place team will receive $2,500.

Ten additional teams were identified as honorable mentions for their ideas.  Winning results and details of their entries are posted on the www.recycleike.com web site.

WorldFest Artistic and Program Director, Kathleen Haney, stated, “We are fiercely dedicated to the Indie Feature and Short Film and look for a quality selection of individual films to maintain a smaller, yet effective program rather than an overly large and unwieldy slate of 150-300 films. Haney continued, “For the 2009 WorldFest we are using ‘A good story, well told’ as our time-tested approach to film selection”. quote of the month

“ My New Year resolution is to be more tolerant and less judgmental of others.  Carl Gustav Jung once said: ‘Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.’ I also think human’s biggest flaw is to pass judgment on others. I don’t want to be judgmental, not only because I don’t want to be judged, but also because I want to have a rich and rewarding human experience by embracing people’s differences.
