| artist with a cause
|
While there are some artists who paint solely to make a living, there are others who paint because they simply cannot help it—it’s a passion that consumes their lives. Hanh Tran, local Houstonian and talented artist, has definitely been consumed by art…but in a good way! What used to be an outlet from studying at night for medical school, has now evolved into not only a part-time career, but also a special way to give back to the community.
Aside from her Impressionist style with a twist of Monet, it is Hanh’s support of local non-profits that really distinguishes her as an artist and a person. “I always tie my art shows to a local charity,” says Hanh. “The Houston community has been extremely supportive of my passion, so this is my own unique way of giving a little back.”
So what inspires Hanh’s thick, bold, colorful strokes? Stress! Ironically enough, she finds herself the most productive when things are most hectic. “My inspiration comes from the stress level of my everyday life, says Hahn. “If I’m having a calm, stress-free day, I don’t feel like painting. But, when I have a hectic, crazy day, it inspires me to paint.” Perhaps the rest of us should take a few notes on how to constructively displace our stress.
Mimi Dinh of Mikel Marketing recently attended the 3rd Annual Heart of Art, a reception that featured original oil paintings by Hanh. Sponsored by California Pizza Kitchen, Skirt Online, and Dripping Spring, the event benefited Pink Door (www.pinkdoor.org). It was actually this event and these pieces of art that inspired Mimi to include Hanh in this issue, not to mention the story behind her success.
As one of seven siblings growing up in a traditional Vietnamese household, Hanh’s passion was not always within reach. Like many Asians, Hanh’s parents valued education and encouraged their children to pursue a “safer”, more “noble” career. Although she expressed an interest in being an artist, it was quite obvious her parents did not approve as it did not meet their standards. Hanh reluctantly obliged by enrolling in medical school, only to be more convinced shortly afterwards that she really should follow her heart.
“I can really relate to Hanh’s story,” Mimi said. “I come from the same background where success is based solely on academics and in traditional, ‘safer’ careers. It’s not our parents’ fault; it’s just what they know and understand. It takes courage and a strong belief in oneself to break away from our family’s expectations and follow our passion.”
Now, a very active artist, Hanh loves what she does and is busy planning her next artist receptions, at least once every three months, and always supporting a local charity. In fact, she her next exhibit will be at Momentum Audi dealership early this June (Stay tuned for more details later).
In her answers below, Hanh gives us an inside look at her life as an artist.
With so many artists and painters out there, how do you feel about the competition, and how do you survive in the art world, especially in this economy? I don’t really consider the other artist as competition; I focus more on my love for painting and what I need to do that works for me. If I worry about what other artist are doing, I would be painting for the wrong reason. I do follow the local art scene as I can only learn and grow from other artists. For my last show I painted several smaller pieces in recognition of the slowing economy and of course prints are available of all my original work. Other than that, I really don’t worry about surviving in the art world. Art will never be a business to me.
What is usually going on in your head while you paint? Or is it different each time? The first thing I feel are colors. Then from the colors, I feel my subject. I never have a game plan when I approach my canvas. It takes the stress off of me. Painting should be fun, not stressful.
Based on your name, we assume you are Vietnamese. Have you been back to Vietnam and if yes, what do you think about the art scene there? I am half Vietnamese and half Chinese. I have not yet been back to Vietnam but will one day. I am curious about the art scene. I am sure it will be very inspirational.
How do you get your inspiration? It’s funny; my inspiration comes from the stress level of my everyday life. If I’m having a calm, stress-free day, I don’t feel like painting. But when I have a hectic, crazy day, it inspires me to paint. And when I paint, I can’t stop until I finish the piece. Driving in the car with no shoes on and listening to country music also inspires me. And talking to people, I feel colors coming out of them.
What do like most about being an artist? The freedom to express it my way; the only way I know how.
What do you like least about it? Cleaning my paint brushes.
Who are your target customers? Me, I believe in painting from my heart and sharing it with everyone. Art is subjective, I can’t please them all.
What was your background in art? No formal background, just what feels right to me.
Do you do this full-time or is this more like a passion on the side? Can one support him/herself as a full-time artist? I currently do this part-time, with the plan of going full time. I believe that one can support him/herself full-time, but you have to be creative and do it in a way that is true to you and not anyone else. Only then will the success in the truest form come.
How do you respond to people who want to buy a piece of art to match their home decor? We all like what we like and I can’t judge someone for what motivates them. In their minds, the home is the canvas and the art and decorations are the paint. Therefore, I think it’s great that we all can express our different artistic abilities in different ways.
Do you have a favorite painting that you created and why? Yes, “Ed” was one of my recent, most favorite pieces that now lives in Boca Raton with a client of mine. Ed Nuccilli was a gentleman that I had met about a year ago at a party in Boca Raton, FL. As I was talking to him about his passion, which was playing the trumpet and writing music, I started to feel very powerful colors coming out of him. He spoke with such heart and soul about his love for music that I decided to paint him when I got back to Houston.
Is there a story behind each of your painting? Some yes, some just because….
What is the art scene like everywhere else compared to the Houston? I believe each city is consistent in its theme, there’s so many talented artist all over the country that there are great art to be found in any city that I’m in.
Who is your most favorite artist in the world and why? Georgia O’Keeffe, she paints with her heart, even if it’s controversial, she’s doing it her way.
Describe a day in the life of Hanh Tran. The first hour of my morning, I don’t say a word. I think I’m still asleep; I do my morning ritual and enjoy a cup of coffee to start the day. Then I head to my office and it’s a whirlwind until I leave for the evening. In my car, it’s a must that I listen to a little Fox News to decompress. Then I’m meeting somebody somewhere, either related to my art or just socially. Head home for the night, can’t sleep, and I end up painting. Then I repeat the madness all over again the next day.
What fun things do you do when you are not painting? Go to Florida and do nothing but lie on the beach and take naps, and visit Austin to enjoy Town Lake.
What qualities do you value in a friend? Being real and compassionate, loving each other’s flaws, and getting together without saying a word.
What are your future plans? Pursue my art career full-time; expand my shows to Austin, New York, Florida, and LA. Be involved and support all the charities that are close and dear to my heart. And maybe, if he’s lucky….I might get married some day and have kids.

houston livestock show and rodeo at a glance |
Each year, between one and two million close, personal friends gather at Reliant Park to enjoy the festivities at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, making the 77-year-old event the largest of its kind in the world.
When: March 3 -22, 2009
Where: Reliant Park
Notable Happenings: Rodeo Houston: The largest rodeo in the world, Rodeo Houston gives Houstonians the opportunity to root on the finest Bareback Riders, Barrel Racers, Bull Riders, Steer Wrestlers, Team Ropers, Tie Down Ropers, and Saddle Bronco Riders in the country.
Bar-B-Que Contest: As far as time honored traditions go, gorging yourself on all the Bar-B-Que you can eat for three straight days ranks pretty high on the list. Given Houston’s proclivity for consumption, “The Cookoff” is one of the Rodeo’s hottest draws, bringing in more than 207,000 in ’08.
Go Texan Day: The Friday before the parade, Houstonians young and old, short and tall, and chubby and, well, chubby, are encouraged to dress in their finest western wear to help usher in the year’s rodeo. An auspicious start to the near-month long event.
Parade and Rodeo Fun: If you’ve never seen it, the Rodeo parade is quite the spectacle. To paraphrase the event, decorative floats and thousands of men and women on horseback juxtapose Downtown’s skyscrapers and freeways, filling the streets with hoof beats and marching bands.
Concert Stars: One of the unquestionably enjoyable aspects of HLSR is the Concert Series. Each year it draws some of music’s biggest names. Elvis Presley, George Straight, Reba McEntire, even Miley Cyrus have all made time for the event. 2009’s line-up includes The Jonas Brothers, Brooks & Dunn, Taylor Swift, Gladys Knight, Lady Antebellum, ZZ Top, Rascall Flats, Ramon Ayala, Pat Green, Gary Allan, Keith Urban, Darius Rucker, Brad Paisley, Clint Black, Josh Turner, Toby Keith, Trace Adkins, Solange, Clay Walker and Alan Jackson.
The Rodeo Uncorked!: Birthed from the obvious need to couple wine with bull riding, The Rodeo Uncorked! is a wine show featuring award-winning wines the world over. It is now in its seventh year.
Carnival: For kids and adults alike, the Carnival at Houston Rodeo is a must-not-miss. This year will feature La Grand Wheel, the largest portable ferris wheel in the Western Hemisphere (seems like a big deal), and The Sky Ride, a 1700 gondola sky ride that transports folk from the kid-specific section of the carnival (Kid Country) to the other side.
Other Events: There are several Special Days throughout the course of the Rodeo, including Black Heritage Day, Go Tejano Day, Ladies Night Out, Lil’ Rustler’s Rodeo, and the Spring Break Stampede. There are also numerous Children Activities (i.e. mechanical bull, milking parlor, pig races, etc), a 21 and over concert area dubbed The Hideout, and Show Pride, an event in which participants are presented with the history of the rodeo. |

frontiers - the journey tribute |
Frontiers - A Tribute to Journey is the world's premiere tribute to the 80's rock pioneers - the ones responsible for selling over 75 million records, including some of rock's most venerable anthems. Twenty-five years after that iconic lineup last graced the stage, Frontiers has carried on the banner of separate ways, summer lovin', and open arms. As a tribute act, few - if any - have such a colorful back-story that blurs the line between tribute and the "real deal."
When Frontiers formed in 2002, lead vocalist Jeremey Hunsicker had little motivation other than to enjoy time in front of audiences singing the songs that he was born to sing. Fate would play a different hand, however. In early 2007, Journey found themselves at a critical crossroad. Do they abandon their signature sound, forged by iconic vocalist Steve Perry - the soundtrack of millions of sweaty backseat hookups in the 80s, and rediscovered by the youth of the new millennium?
After working with vocalist Jeff Scott Soto whose vocal character was miles from the Perry signature, the band decided to embrace the "legacy sound." Their journey would lead them to YouTube, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain's daughter would lead him to Frontiers vocalist Jeremey Hunsicker. He phoned Hunsicker, and explained the band’s situation. “They think I’m crazy,” he explained to Hunsicker, “But the way you perform those songs is inspiring.” With the birth of his first child only weeks away, and the demand of a years worth of touring over his head, ultimately Hunsicker stepped away from the situation. But his time with Journey would prove prosperous nonetheless. One of the songs co-written with Journey would be the lead single off of Journey’s new Wal Mart record, “Revelation.” Neal Schon would reflect on Hunsicker’s brief flirtation with stardom in an interview in June 2008. “Jeremey Hunsicker…He was very good… but he was a bit scary because he was almost too much like Perry. He was almost like a duplicate, probably the closest of anyone out there.” A ringing endorsement for a tribute singer who was able to find happiness doing what he loves on his own terms

marketing predictions for 2009
Written by Mimi Dinh |
| As the economy continues to slow, 2009 will be a challenging year for many businesses. During such times, countless panicked companies often make the mistake of cutting marketing budgets, when they should instead be making their marketing dollars work even harder for them. In previous downturns, companies that have continued to market themselves have proven to be prosperous in the end. “The question should not be whether to cut marketing budgets, but rather, how to get maximum value from existing budgets,” states Mimi Dinh, president of Mikel Marketing.
While consumers are looking for the best deals, companies are looking for more economical ways to do business; Internet seems to be the logical answer. As the bad economy deters customers from trying out new things—making them even more loyal to what they are already familiar with—the focus will turn to retaining existing customers. Also, we must not forget that ‘creativity’ is the key word; marketers must be more accountable when establishing a creative marketing strategy that separates them from the competition and shows a quick return.
Here are our top 10 marketing predictions for 2009:

1) Smart companies will continue to market throughout the downturn.
2) Cross promotion – Many companies who share a similar target market, but are not competing with one other, will join forces to piggy-back on each other’s promotional opportunities. These companies must also rely on each other for cross referrals. Creative marketers who ‘think outside the box’ by providing innovative ways to create synergy among the right niche of companies will increase values for their clients.
3) Marketers will now be held accountable for their marketing campaigns’ success or failure. Marketing strategies that don’t show their value quickly are not going to make it. This will mean a renewed focus for marketing departments, and campaigns that aren’t working will be cut.
4) e-Marketing will continue to grow. Effective online marketing, if done right, can maximize profit during the gloomy economy, as its many solutions and advantages become even more apparent. We will see an increased use of analytic tools (e.g., Google Analytics) to improve ROI, by offering end-to-end optimization for search, display advertising, affiliate marketing and e-mail marketing. We will also see an increased focus on organic (i.e., free) search engine optimization (SEO) content targeting, and an increased use of search engine marketing (SEM) techniques, such as pay-per-click (PPC) and other trackable paid marketing techniques.
5) Company website – Currently, many organizations are not maximizing their website potentials and need to better understand that this channel can be critical in lead generation and customer engagement. Click tracking should be a default within your website function.
6) A trend in getting the word out to the consumer through multi channel, social networks and consistent marketing. We will see an increase in company blogs and e-newsletters to create dialog and relationships with prospects and current customers.
7) Advertisers must be more careful with their ad dollars, while advertising mediums must be creative in providing more “added values” to advertisers, as well as showing return on investment (ROI) by offering end-to-end optimization for search, display advertising, affiliate marketing, e-mail marketing, cross promotional and event marketing opportunities.
8) Companies will shift focus toward increasing revenue from existing customers. In scary times, customers are more reluctant to try something new, sticking more to familiarity. Companies should take advantage of this by creating marketing strategies to show customer appreciation, giving incentives for repeat business, deals and offers as standard operating procedure.
9) Creativity is the key to developing winning strategies with proven success. Traditional marketers will have the biggest challenge when competing with innovative, creative marketers who offer unconventional marketing techniques and solutions to companies.
10) We will see an increase in outsourced marketing functions to experienced professionals.
In summary, cutting marketing costs is NOT the answer to combat the slow economy. When times are tough, our first instinct as business owners is to cut spending, and usually marketing budget is the first to go. It may seem counter-intuitive, but the tough times are when you should reallocate money toward your marketing budget, in a controlled and precise way that gets you the most for your dollar.
When you are pulling back on your spending, more than likely other people are too, including your customers. The result? Fewer dollars are being spent in the market, and yet there is still the same amount of competition. This creates the necessity to work harder to make sure current and potential customers know why they should stick with you during the tough times; this message to your customers is delivered via your marketing strategy.

blaffer gallery names claudia schmuckli as new director |
| After a nine month national search, Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, has selected the museum's acting chief curator Claudia Schmuckli to fill the position of director.
The Blaffer search committee, led by advisory board emeritus Shirley Rose and College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences dean John Antel, cited that Schmuckli "possesses the talent, experience and energy to step into her new role."
"The national search yielded many highly qualified candidates," Antel said. "The search committee took particular notice of Claudia's strong leadership in the absence of a director over the past nine months. Her vision for the museum combined with the impressive list of exciting exhibitions that she organized made her most qualified for job."
Schmuckli has been with Blaffer Gallery since 2004 when she joined the staff as director of public relations and membership. In 2006, she was appointed curator. Prior to moving to Houston, Schmuckli lived in New York City, serving as assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art from 1999 through 2003 and as curatorial assistant at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from 1997 through 1999. She holds a Master of Arts degree in art history from the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany.
Schmuckli has been a pivotal figure in the presentation of contemporary art in Houston. Her most recent projects for Blaffer were Chantal Akerman: Moving through Time and Space (2008) and the Houston Area Exhibition (2008). Past exhibitions include Amy Sillman: Suitors & Strangers (2007), Katrina Moorhead: A Thing Called Early Blur (2007) and Urs Fischer: Mary Poppins (2006).
"I am excited to take the reins at this particular moment in time," Schmuckli stated. "I inherit a healthy institution with an exceptionally dedicated staff, enthusiastic board and an ambitious agenda. With new university leadership in place that has made the advancement of the arts one of its top priorities, this is a unique opportunity to build on past successes and to expand the reach of the museum's exhibitions and programs on and off campus."
The opening reception for the two winter exhibitions, Electric Mud and Texas Oil: Landscape of an Industry is Friday, Jan. 16, from 6 until 8 p.m. Blaffer Gallery encourages the public to attend this free event to help welcome Schmuckli into her new role.
"It has been a pleasure working with Claudia since she joined the museum," noted Russell Sherrill, chairman of the Blaffer advisory board. "Our board is confident in Claudia's ability to lead the Blaffer and continue its success in reaching local, national and international audiences."

| weekend getaways |
| I love weekend getaways - simple and refreshing. They are just what I need to keep my stress levels down and my sense of adventure up, all while not breaking the bank. Between my husband and I, our busy schedules don’t allow for many long, drawn out family vacations; so, we do our best to utilize weekend getaways.
These past two weekends, we headed west to San Antonio one weekend and then Austin the next. While neither trip lasted very long, both weekends were filled with fun, action, and most importantly, quality time spent with my family and friends.
SAN ANTONIO
Though I have been to San Antonio quite a few times, I would never pass up a chance to go back. My daughter and I came along for the ride, as it was my husband’s work related conference that brought all of us there this time. The most memorable day of our weekend was spent at the McNay Museum. I have wanted to go here for years, but due to re-construction, I have been unable to visit. Finally, I was able to go!
As I waked up to the museum, I was in awe. It was even more beautiful than I had imagined. I had no idea San Antonio was home to such a magnificent facility. Aside from its beauty, the entire place was surprisingly Zen, which made my experience there even more enjoyable. Built by educator Marion Koogler McNay in the 1920s, the Spanish Colonial Revival-style home opened as the first museum of modern art in 1954. McNay held that the experience of great art should be available to anyone and everyone. Now, more than 100,000 visitors a year are captivated by superlative works of art by 20th-century luminaries including Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
The museum has continued to follow the wishes of Mrs. McNay by promoting the advancement and enjoyment of modern art. Mrs. McNay’s collection was strong in French Post-Impressionist painting, early 20th-century European art, modern American watercolors, and Southwest folk art. Since the initial bequest, the collections have strengthened primarily in the areas of 19th- and 20th-century prints and drawings, 20th-century American paintings, 19th- and 20th-century European and American sculpture, and theater arts.
The museum houses over 7,000 works of art, ranging from the medieval period to the present day. The McNay features one of the Southwest's strongest collections of prints and drawings, one of the nation's leading collections of theater arts, and a nationally important collection of modern European and American painting and sculpture.
After spending almost a full day roaming the museum halls, my husband and daughter practically had to drag me out. While I was sad to leave, I am already looking forward to going back this fall. They are launching a new exhibit in October 2009 called Reclaimed: Art from the Collection of Jacques Goudstikker. This exhibition presents rare Old Master paintings drawn from the collection of Jacques Goudstikker, one of the preeminent art dealers in Amsterdam prior to World War II. In 1940, Goudstikker was forced to flee war-torn Europe with his family, yet died in a tragic accident while escaping the Nazi invasion. He left behind approximately 1,400 works of art in his gallery, which were looted by Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering. After years of unsuccessful attempts to recover these paintings, his family recently reclaimed 200 paintings from the Dutch government. Forty of the finest pieces—including Dutch Old Master works and Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings—have been selected for a touring exhibition that will showcase the eye of Jacques Goudstikker and emphasize the importance of both the artworks and their historic restitution. Photographs and documents, including Goudstikker’s gallery inventory notebook, will illuminate Goudstikker’s fascinating story (www.thejewishmuseum.org). For anyone who loves art and museums as much as I do, I definitely recommend you visit this exhibit (Oct. 7, 2009-Jan 10, 2010). You know we won’t miss it!
While my time in San Antonio was spent mostly with family, I did take one evening to re-connect with my good friend Azmina whom I have known for over 20 years. Saturday night, Azmina gathered some of her girlfriends and we all hit the town, well, the suburbs, for a ladies night. I drove about 30 minutes from our hotel on the River Walk, to a place called The Green Lantern, located in suburban neighborhood, which was very casual and pub-like. I probably would have never come here if it hadn’t been for my friend, but I am certainly glad I did. It gave me a chance to venture out to somewhere other than the usual River Walk that we always hung around whenever we were in SA.
The Green Lantern was quite perplexing actually because to tell the truth, I was little skeptical. Let’s just say you probably won’t see this place in an episode of Sex and the City. However, after I got over the fact that it was located in a neighborhood—which I later found out is known as the Beverly Hills of San Antonio— I realized that it embodied lot of character, inside and out. The giant aluminum fork statue out front added a little corky-ness and pizzazz, while the interior possessed a very welcoming and “Cheers-like” atmosphere…a nice change from the Houston scene. Right when I walked in, I was greeted by the friendly manager who promptly escorted me to the basement where the bar was located. As we were walking, I mentioned that the drive out there took me what seemed like forever. Delighted that I traveled so far just to come to his establishment, he gave me a complimentary bottle of wine to share with the girls just to show his gratitude. Astonished by his generosity, I knew that this was only the beginning of a great evening. We stayed for hours just laughing, chatting, reminiscing and girls just being girls – the evening was an absolute blast a blast, even by Sex and the City’s standards!
AUSTIN
You may not know this but I’d been anticipating this trip to Austin for quite some time now. Back in November, my husband and I and a group of friends signed up for the 2009 Austin Marathon & Half Marathon and have been training for it ever since. Upon checking in at the Omni Hotel in Austin, we immediately dropped our bags and headed over to the marathon registration center, held in the Austin Convention center. I was extremely surprised to see how well organized the process was, as we promptly received our marathon bibs and t-shirts. Aside from just registration tables, there were all kinds of booths and kiosks selling sporting goods, nutrition bars, running equipment, etc.; it was really a sight to see so many people in one room, all connected by the same passion for running!
After getting our marathon business taking care of, it was time to find a good restaurant, so the six of us could celebrate our reunion and our first marathon/half-marathon together. Finding a place to eat dinner that night was fairly tricky considering it was Valentine’s Day. As we were walking around trying to find a good restaurant where we could reserve a table, we stopped by Whole Foods to get some water bottles, and noticed a large crowd of people congregating around what looked like an “open kitchen.” Curious, we walked over and saw several chefs making all different kinds of pasta dishes, exactly what we needed since running is the best excuse for all of us to load up on carbs. What a brilliant concept! Why didn’t other markets think of it before? And why don’t all of them do it? All the fresh ingredients are right there within reach, so why not cook and serve them right there? We had what seemed like every kind of pasta imaginable: linguini, risotto, ravioli, cannelloni, tortellini, you name it! The chef then infused our dishes with olive oil, cheeses, fresh vegetables, oregano, and basil, tossed with fresh vegetables. It was a meal to die for! While waiting for our dishes, we walked around the store and brought over some baguettes, a bottle of wine, some pulled pork meat for appetizer, and served ourselves at our table. What fun!
The next morning, we woke up at 5:30AM, ate breakfast, and immediately went to the “starting line.” It was actually quite overwhelming as there were over 5,000 runners. Aside from just being excited about running, I was very proud to be a part of The Austin Marathon & Half Marathon because of its green initiative. They incorporated countless green alternatives such as: 100% Online Registration, Waste Disposal and Recycling, Plastics and cardboard recycling, Composting dumpsters for surplus waste and food, Solar-powered main stage, Biodiesel and solar-powered generators for all electricity needs, Team of kayakers from the Austin Rowing Center will retrieve items discarded in Lady Bird Lake as runners pass over the Ann B. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge and the South First Street bridge, among many others.
While most of us did a half marathon, one of our friends decided to do the full 26 miles, who amazingly finished at 4 hours and 14 minutes. After crossing the finish line at 2 hours and 22 minutes, I remember feeling excited, accomplished, and yes, tired. All of my months of training had finally paid off, and it was definitely worth it! I was just as proud at each one from our group as I was myself, all beaming with enthusiasm and pride.
After the race, we returned to our hotel, showered, rested, and met again for lunch one last time before we headed back home. Because we loved Whole Foods so much the day before, we decided to go back for round two. As we were eating, I noticed how animated we all were, reliving each moment as we shared each other’s stories. As our excitement escaladed, we actually started discussing when our next marathon would be. Countless cities and venues were passed around when finally someone mentioned Paris; at that moment everyone smiled in agreement. Of course, Paris; just the thought of running through places the Eiffel Tower, Place de la Concorde, and Champs-Elysees was almost too much for us to handle. I can’t wait! Will keep you posted! |

| 125-inch plasma expected to make debut in 2009 |
Shinoda, a Japanese display company, is starting to produce its 3-meter wide flexible plasma display, and expects to appear in 2009. The 125-inch display is made using a proprietary plasma array technology developed by the company, with the first screens aimed at public display applications. A prototype has been displayed at the FPD International exhibition in Japan on last Wednesday.
Shinoda has developed technology to make plasma displays that are only 0.1mm thin and flexible. In addition to its size and flexibility the panel is light, weighing about 1.4 kilograms. It also uses a maximum of 600 watts of power, which is less than half that of a display array made with conventional plasma display panels.
Samples of the screen are already with manufacturing companies and commercial versions are expected in April or May next year.
The prototype has a relatively low resolution of 960 pixels by 360 pixels, which is fine for public information displays but is well below that for even standard definition television.

The 42nd Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival continues its totally dedicated Independent Film screening format for the upcoming April 16-25, 2009 unspooling. WorldFest will screen just 50-60 feature film premieres, with a total and absolute emphasis on the American and International Independent feature films and a continuing annual spotlight on award-winning short films and documentary films.
WorldFest Artistic and Program Director, Kathleen Haney, stated, “We are fiercely dedicated to the Indie Feature and Short Film and look for a quality selection of individual films to maintain a smaller, yet effective program rather than an overly large and unwieldy slate of 150-300 films. Haney continued, “For the 2009 WorldFest we are using ‘A good story, well told’ as our time-tested approach to film selection”. (For complete winner info from the past 2008 WorldFest, go to – http://www.worldfest.org – click on View the 2008 Remi Winners).
The mission of WorldFest is to recognize and validate creative excellence in film & video production in every facet and category of filmmaking. Many filmmakers report that a Remi Award from WorldFest opens doors to advance their careers. WorldFest will continue with its annual Short Film Showcase, a special review of 100 new short and student films...from the festival that gave first top honors to Spielberg, Lucas, The Coen Brothers, Ridley Scott, Robert Rodriguez, Spike Lee, Gavin Hood, John Lee Hancock, Michael Cimino, Steven Poster, Oliver Stone, Ang Lee, Atom Egoyan and David Lynch, among many others!
WorldFest began in August 1961, as Cinema Arts, an International Film Society. It began screening Independent, foreign & art films. It became an officially competitive International Film Festival Seven years later, in April 1968, and has been in continuous operation since. It is one of the original three film festivals in North America, with San Francisco and New York as the first two events. Following WorldFest was Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, and Seattle. Then Sundance and SXSW, Toronto and Tribeca. Now there are more than 1,000 USA film festivals of various types, levels and quality, most being simply non-competitive screening events! WorldFest is international, competitive and invites filmmakers worldwide.
The 42nd Annual WorldFest offers International Competition in; Features, Shorts, TV production, TV commercials, unproduced Screenplays & Teleplays, Experimental, Student, Documentary, Business & Industry, New Media, and Music Videos. WorldFest is the largest film & video competition in the world, in sheer number of actual category entries, with more than 4,500 category entries received in 2008.
