heart of art exhibition

The 3rd Annual Heart of Art exhibition and charity auction took place on February 12, 2009 at Roche Bobois and benefited Pink Door Non-Profit, a charitable organization that helps single, divorced or widowed women cancer survivors follow their dreams down the lighted path to a successful career. An exhibition of original oil paintings on canvas by local artist, Hanh Tran, was the center point of the event. Tran hosts four exhibitions per year and always includes a charity component, which is her way of promoting new work as well as giving back to the community. Approximately 450 guests attended the event and Pink Door Non-Profit received more than $3,000 in proceeds. This event was made possible by the generous support of Roche Bobois, California Pizza Kitchen, Skirt! Magazine and Dripping Springs Vodka. Tran's next exhibition is scheduled for June 4, 2009 at Momentum Audi, 2315 Richmond from 6 to 9 pm.

the lawyer with a huge heart

If you have lived in Houston for a while, you have probably heard of Gordon Quan, and perhaps even met him. Although a noted Houstonian, former elected official and established attorney, Gordon is most notorious for his positive demeanor and community outreach efforts. His warm heart and noble character have touched countless people, and as a direct result, earned him unconditional support from all types of communities and age groups. One can always spot Gordon at high profile events, grand openings, and occasional hip parties around town; it seems that everyone wants Gordon to attend their events. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see Gordon juggling two or three functions on the same night, simply making an appearance at each to please the hosts. Because of his big-heartedness and eagerness to help, we aren’t afraid to admit that we hope Gordon continues his public service duties. Should he run for office again, Gordon will definitely land our vote.

Today, Gordon is exerting all of his efforts toward immigration law. For those who may be unfamiliar, immigration lawyers in the US work with countless government agencies to help individuals with all of their immigration tribulations. They work on issues dealing with immigration, emigration, visas, green cards, political asylum, and other important immigration and naturalization issues. The US is a free nation that accepts a certain amount of people to immigrate within its borders each year; however, the freedom to immigrate into America is a privilege given only to a select few. To expedite this process, immigrants can seek counsel with an immigration attorney to facilitate residency and citizenship proceedings. Gordon Quan, co-chairman of Foster Quan, LLP, the nation’s second largest immigration law firm, helps immigrants do just that.

It wasn’t until after studying engineering throughout college, and then teaching at an inner-city school shortly thereafter, that Gordon realized what he really wanted to do with his life. With a newly discovered determination and concrete objective in mind, he decided to go to back to school; this time, to study law. It was the noticeable disconnect between the government and new immigrants combined with Gordon’s passion for serving others that led him to immigration law. As years past, it didn’t take Gordon long to establish himself as one of the most noteworthy immigrations lawyers present today, receiving honors such as Best Lawyers in America; Who's Who in American Law; and Texas Super Lawyers. His political career officially took off when he was elected to the Houston City Council in 2000. Gordon was later unanimously approved by the Council to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem in 2002.

In his answers below, Gordon gives us a closer look at his life as lawyer, elected official, and the journey it took to get to where he is today…

Please describe what your firm does, its specialty. Our firm specializes in immigration law.

With so many law firms out there, what makes your law firm unique? We believe that we are the only comprehensive immigration law firm that not only assists in immigration to the US, but emigration to other countries. We represent businesses and individuals in all aspects of immigration, from non-immigrant visas to complex federal litigation.

What do like most about your job? Helping individuals navigate the immigration maze.

What do you like least about it? Occasionally dealing with immigration officials who clearly misinterpret the law.

Who are your desired target clients? We look to represent large multi-national corporations, university systems, medical personnel, school districts, and high net worth investors.

What challenges do you face in your business? We are working with an immigration law that has not seen major changes in twenty years, and does not meet the country’s needs today.

Has the slow economy affected your work at all? I feel that it has helped me to be more empathetic to the plight of our clients.

Do you think we have a problem with illegal immigration in Texas and how can we solve it? I believe we have a problem with not knowing who these individuals are and not allowing them to work to their full potential. I believe we sorely need a comprehensive reform that would provide these individuals a pathway to becoming legally resident and address our long term needs and priorities as a country.

What is your nationality? Have you always lived in Houston? I am Chinese. My family moved to Houston when I was three years old.

Do you travel a lot outside of Houston? I probably travel outside of Houston once or twice a month. We have offices in San Antonio, Austin, the Rio Grande Valley, Mexico City and expect to open our office in Washington, D.C. next month. Describe a day in the life of Gordon Quan. I generally see 4-5 clients a day, attend a board meeting for one of the community organizations of which I am a member, answer 50-200 emails, and meet with staff on pending cases. I am generally out at social events 3-4 nights a week and work out 4-5 times a week.

How did you find your business partner(s) or how did they find you? Prior to our recent merger, I hired each of my partners as young attorneys and nurtured them for about 5-7 years. Our merger is with another well established firm headed by Charles Foster who I have known for over thirty years. You used to serve as councilman for the city. What was that experience like? I enjoyed my tenure on the Houston City Council. It gave me a deeper appreciation of the workings of government and allowed me to meet many interesting people.

Will you run for office again? If yes, in which position and when? I don’t know. I haven’t ruled it out, but I need to make sure this new firm functions well.

What fun things do you do when you are not working? I love sports; I play tennis, I am learning golf and attend as many baseball games as I can.

What is your favorite drink (or cocktail)? Hot green tea

What qualities do you most value in a business associate? In a friend? I value associates and friends who truly care for the well-being of others, even beyond themselves.

Who is your role model? Why? While I have no role model, I try to live according to Christian faith.

What are your future plans? Try to do good work; love others no matter how they may disappoint you; have fun; and maintain a positive point of view.

Vida Del Baile
Latin Dance Festival
May 5, 2009 at the Wortham Center - Cullen Theater

Interested in performing in this concert? Here's how:

Dancers—Dance Houston festivals are fun, professional, exciting, challenging, and inspiring. In sharing the stage with 100 - 200 dancers in a single show, our festivals are a unique setting in which dancers of many styles get to shine. Because our festivals feature dance companies, most dancers who perform with us are a part of one of the participating companies in any given concert. Company auditions are held throughout the year and we will send you notices if you sign up for our mailing list and specify that you are a dancer when prompted. Occasionally we work with independent dancers who possess unique and highly developed gifts, so please call us at (713) 526-1049 if you would like to be considered for a special engagement.

Dance Companies & Crews—Dance Houston provides performance opportunities for many of Houston's newest and best dance companies. Our line-up is almost complete for The Edge, so please call us at 713-526-1049 immediately if you would like for us to consider your company. The best way to receive information regarding future performance opportunities is by joining our mailing list and specifying when prompted that you are a dance company director. We will send you a notice when we are accepting applications for a concert (typically 2 - 3 months prior to the concert). Please check out our online videos or DVDs of past shows (available on our online store) to see if your company might be interested in participating in one of our festivals.

Choreographers—Dance Houston helps foster the development of new choreographers in Houston and we love supporting Houston debuts. We have sponsored and produced premiere works for emerging choreographers including Flamenco en Vivo's Antonio Granjero, Urban Souls Dance Company's Harrison Guy, and most recently Exhilaration EnCompassed's Jessalyn Pratka. The best way to receive information regarding choreographic opportunities is by joining our mailing list and specifying that you are a choreographer when prompted. We'll be in touch to help you find your niche and make your mark in the Houston dance community.

all work and no play? no way!

Quite a few things come to mind when we think of Vegas: casinos, celebrities, gambling, night clubs, shopping, restaurants, etc.; what many of us don’t think of is work. While I would hardly call my time spent in Vegas work, that’s precisely why I was there. This February, I traveled to Las Vegas as a guest speaker for the 2009 CaterSource / Event Solutions Conference & Trade Show.

Event Solutions—in partnership with Catersource Magazine, Conference & Tradeshow—held their annual conference and tradeshow in Las Vegas, Feb. 22 - 26, 2009. The award-winning event brings together planners, producers, caterers, suppliers and designers from all over the world, empowering planners to conquer the dynamic challenges facing event businesses, while growing professional opportunities.

In 2007, the show was named Best Conference & Expo, beating out the event “O! You” by The Oprah Magazine, to win the top FOLIO: Awards for Magazine Events award in its category. With corporate and association certificate options from Event Solutions and the University of Las Vegas’ hospitality school, continuing education credits, a series of courses for master planners, and series covering “green” events and weddings, it’s the most complete event education in the industry. This year, more than 7,000 attendees and 800 exhibit booths made it a successful show for all. (www.event-solutions.com)

Practice makes perfect…
Though I was flattered to be asked to speak at such a prestigious event, I must admit I was extremely nervous, especially when I found out I had one hour+ to speak. Wanting to excel verbally as well as visually, I began preparing my presentation months in advance. This process, which I knew was going to be extensive, ended up taking me four months to prepare, and I continued to revise it until the last minute…thank goodness I didn’t procrastinate.

A little overwhelmed and not knowing where to begin, I just dove right in. Immediately, I realized the problem wasn’t finding the material, it was actually breaking it all down and fashioning it into an organized and interesting production. After an extensive “process of elimination,” sorting through notes, marketing materials, images, etc., my project was finally starting to take shape. My topic, “Invites and More: Branding the Event Experience with Effective Marketing Materials,” had finally been defined, my materials had a consistent flow, and the six case studies I had decided to incorporate created the perfect transitions from subject to subject. To equally stimulate my audience visually, I spent as much time carefully selecting images for my Power Point as I did written the content. In addition, I created two supplemental display boards, complete with paper material samples, packaging styles, invitation samples, and more; all of which were fastened by Velcro so the audience could touch and feel each item afterwards.

In what turned out to be a very successful attempt to fine tune my presentation, I invited my friends and industry professionals to a ‘focus group’ session at my office the week before my big day for a ‘mock talk’. This session turned out to be exactly what I needed. Everyone gave me valuable advice, feedback, and pointers. It was with their help that I was able to hone in my skills and perfect my presentation.

Work…
Though the convention was being held at the Las Vegas Hilton, my friend Mary and I stayed at the Paris Las Vegas because one hotel was far too small to accommodate all of the attendees. After checking in to our hotel, we immediately went to the registration booth, and were pleasantly surprised by how organized everything was: our badges, event information, transportation tickets, etc. were given to us without any problems or delay…I love it when that happens!

While the Paris Las Vegas didn’t exactly compare to the real Paris, our hotel was quite charming and a pleasure to stay at. It captured all of the intricate details of Paris, right down to the cobblestone streets and replica of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe. The building walls surrounding the casino were modeled after those of actual French neighborhoods, including the occasional “for sale” sign in the window. As I walked these streets to the French cafes, pastry shops, and restaurants, nostalgic French “elevator music” made the experience that much more believable. Our frequent stop was the patisserie where we had more sinful desserts and pastries than we should have. Yum!

To take advantage of all four days and everything the convention had to offer, my friend and I would wake up early, eat breakfast, and head out. We mapped out our itinerary for each day, trying to attend as many of the classes as possible. Every session was so informative and inspiring I couldn’t wait to get to the next. I learned everything from creating winning event proposals to trendy new hors d’oeuvres for receptions – from building successful relationships between event planners and caterers to using Twitter to promote an event… The topics were amazing; we wanted to attend them all. They were informative, inspiring, and fun!

In addition to the sessions, I really enjoyed the actual trade show. With more than 1,000 exhibits, we must have visited at least half. I couldn’t believe all of the different vendors; there were booths for floral arrangements, table settings, dishware, lighting & sound, etc. If you’re having trouble imagining it, try picturing a bridal extravaganza or home & garden show on steroids. It was definitely overwhelming, yet rousing at the same time. As we wandered from booth to booth, we had the great pleasure of munching on some of the yummiest treats I have ever tasted. Fitting for such an event, top caterers from around the nation were here as well, offering samples of their finest wines, hors d’ oeuvres, and desserts. It’s not surprising Mary and I were so full when we left.

Play…
It seemed like at every moment there was always something exciting going on. While we would have loved to attend all of the events associated with the convention, we chose two in particular. The first event was the outdoor BBQ Lunch. Because it was on the first day, this was the perfect event to mingle casually, enjoy a great meal, and just relax. I even got my own little taste of Texas right in the heart of Vegas!

The second event we went to was the 2009 Fabulous Showcase Event held at the Hard Rock Hotel’s Body English. As soon as we walked in, we were mesmerized. Dancers positioned around the night club seemed to emerge organically from architectural elements. Outfitted in spandex, they moved to the techno music and fascinated everybody there. We could even join in by stepping inside a frame and moving to the beat ourselves. This event was the most memorable by far. The moving and dancing combined with the patterns and lighting cast on the spandex was truly amazing. Talk about innovative ideas for event entertainment!

By now, you’re probably wondering when I’m going to get to the juicy stuff. All this talk about Vegas without a hint of nightlife; well, perhaps my next few nights will interest you. Though our time there was limited, Mary and I managed to visit three different nightclubs…just to see what Vegas was really all about.

Our clubs of choice ended up being Privé, a South Beach-style lounge located in the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino known for attracting stars like Pamela Anderson, Joel Madden, Eddie Murphy, Janet Jackson, and Bruce Willis. Also, Pure, a chic, modern venue that caters to the most discerning, upscale clientele, recognized for producing some of the most progressive music mixes on the club scene; and last but not least, LAX, located in the Luxor Hotel & Casino, which plays hosts to DJ extraordinaires like DJ AM and DJ Vice, and is the destination of choice for club-goers, A-list celebrities and social jet setters.

Everywhere we went, we were honestly shocked by the hospitality and special treatment we received. At each club, we were invited or escorted to the VIP section, given complimentary bottle service, and treated with the utmost respect. I am more of a “lounge” girl, preferring to be in a more laid back atmosphere with mellow, down tempo music where people can carry a conversation. And while I remain partial to the European and Miami lounge scene, Mary and I were certainly in the groove as we danced to the music, sipped sassy cocktails, and witnessed Vegas’ true colors.

It’s no secret that that too much work combined with too much play can wear a person out; however, we weren’t going to let a little tiredness slow us down. We had worked the convention, attended events and experienced the nightlife, now there was one thing left to do: shop. If you thought we were going to leave Vegas without any type of retail fix, you thought wrong. Taking shape in the form of 170 specialty stores, Vegas’ Miracle Mile may be one of the longest, yet fiercest fashion districts I’ve ever seen. Offering everything from American Apparel and True Religion Brand Jeans to BCBG MAXAZRIA and Marciano, we were in shopping heaven. And, it was nice to see a lot of affordable prices; I didn’t feel like fainting every time I looked at a price tag. I’m proud to say didn’t do too much damage, although I couldn’t say the same for my friend Mary. But hey, who can blame her?

Farewell Sin City…
While my time spent in Vegas could be considered a vacation, I consider it more of a learning experience. The CaterSource / Event Solutions Conference & Trade Show was by far the most exquisite and valuable conference I have been to thus far. The combination of classes, exhibits, event functions, and trade show created what I image is every industry professionals’ dream come true. I had every resource I use on daily basis right there in front of me, teaching and showing me new ways to do my job better. In addition, by coming here, I was given the rare opportunity to meet not only the “head-honchos” in the industry, but also countless other event planners just like myself. The relationships and contacts I built with some of these people, in conjunction with the knowledge I gained from so many classes are without a doubt my most prized souvenir. On that note, this was a trip where “what happened in Vegas, should definitely not stay in Vegas!”

Mark your calendars for next year’s show, March 7 - 11, 2010 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and Paris Hotel. Whether you are in the event coordination, fund-raising, hospitality, decoration, lighting, sound, and staging business, or simply want to learn how to plan an event, this convention has plenty to offer. Maybe we’ll see you there next year!

historic houston heights home & garden tour

The Houston Heights Association’s Historic Houston Heights Spring Home & Garden Tour, scheduled for the first weekend in April, has a unique focus this year. Its theme, “Soaring to New Heights,” emphasizes the way the neighborhood continues to invite growth while maintaining tradition.

“The Heights is a new hot spot. Many new faces are moving into this neighborhood where others have lived for generations,” said Christine Spin, the committee chair. “We want visitors to come and see why everyone is talking about the Heights—exciting restaurants, eclectic boutiques, rare antiques, and the annual Spring Home & Garden Tour is one of the neighborhood’s most-anticipated events. Once you spend a day here, you will want to return soon to explore more of this diverse community.”

All of the stops on the tour reflect the spirit of putting a new face on historical tradition. Five of the six houses are renovated historic homes while the only new home on the tour was built in a style that reflects the traditional architecture of the neighborhood.

Many of the homes also reflect green initiatives by “recycling” several elements of the original in their updated forms. One home dates back to 1898, and another is a 1915 Craftsman bungalow, both renovated to suit contemporary lifestyles. One 1930s bungalow has been expanded to serve as art gallery and studio to local renowned artist John Palmer. Still the remodeling projects preserve the original nature of the homes, using original forms, salvaged materials, original doors and wood floors. This mix of old and new, of antique furniture and contemporary art, exemplifies the homeowners’ vision of the new Heights.

The annual Candlelight Dinner & Auction will kick off the festivities from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday, April 3 at Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street. The dinner follows a private tour of the homes.

Shuttle rides will be available to escort people along the tour and can be boarded at the Heights Fire Station at Yale and 12th Street. Waiting passengers can view the HHA’s fourth annual Youth Art Show, where student work will be judged and recognized by a panel of local artists.

For 2 days and 39 miles, you have the opportunity to dramatically impact the lives of millions affected by breast cancer worldwide. By participating in the Avon Walk, you’ll allow medically under-insured women and men to receive the screening, support, and treatment they require. And leading-edge research teams will be powered by the cure all because of you. Take the first step. Register today!

A vibrant international city, cultural diversity, picturesque parks and a leading medical community making cancer history—all provide obvious and persuasive reasons why we kick off the Avon Walk in 2009 in the great city of Houston. You’ll walk amidst glorious oak trees, funky antique and craft shops, designer boutiques and pictorial greenbelts while witnessing Houston’s skyline, which showcases some of the best modern architecture around. This event takes place during Houston’s most beautiful spring month—April 4-5, 2009.

Everyone has a personal reason for taking part in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. It may be a sister, mother, best friend, or possibly even yourself. But for one weekend, whether you walk or volunteer, we’ll all be reaching for the same goal—finding a cure for breast cancer. For more information and to register, click here.

the fun never stops at pagoda!

It’s more than just the food that attracts people to Pagoda Vietnamese Bistro & Bar. From their always-happening bar scene and oasis-inspired outdoor patio, to their trendy theme nights and special events, Pagoda seems to offer an atmosphere virtually everyone can appreciate, not to mention their new and improved menu.

On a mission to instill monotonous workweeks with something to look forward to, restaurant owners, Sandy and Ester Tran, designate three nights a week for guests to kick back, watch the game, or just indulge in their favorite foods and drinks. In addition, Pagoda also plays host to private events. Whether they are acting as a venue for others, or hosting an event of their own, the restaurant is constantly alive with energy.

  • Monday Mingle—Pagoda welcomes all sports fans every Monday for Sports Night. Come in, watch the game or ESPN, and take advantage of $10 steaks and $5 “you call its.”
  • Martini Wednesdays— Need a mid-week break? Targeting the eclectic crowd, Pagoda offers $5 Martinis all night long every Wednesday.
  • Lucky ThursdaysReverse Happy Hour from 8pm-12am— For a little pre-weekend fun, Pagoda invites guests every Thursday for inexpensive drinks and Happy Hour bites. Making Thursdays even hotter is DJ Dan Knee spinning beats to set an upbeat and vivacious mood.

There’s just something about sitting on a patio that reminds us of summer vacations and easy breezes. Pagoda’s outdoor patio is a tropical oasis conveniently located just west of downtown, in the Washington Corridor/Heights neighborhood. The bamboo enclosed patio, cascading with perfectly placed yellow umbrellas, has a divine sense of privacy yet al fresco ambiance.

  • Saturday & Sunday Brunch— The weekend is all about sharing great food with friends or family in a laid back environment! Join Pagoda on the outdoor patio for a Bottomless Mimosa, Hue Bloody Mary or Café Sua Da, and special brunch menu, featuring items like the decadent French Kiss and savory Ham-let on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am -3pm. For those looking for a little more action, a guest DJ will be infusing the atmosphere with energy and oomph on Sundays only!

New Menu - Though Pagoda has already been making an epicurean impact, they recently launched their updated, critically-acclaimed full menu, which rivals in quality even the most traditional Vietnamese cuisine. Offering everything from mouth-watering noodle bowls to decadent entrees, every diner is sure to find a new favorite. New menu items include White Rose Dumplings, Clay Pot Eggplant, and Savory Salmon, just to name a few. The new dishes embrace traditional flavors and bold tastes, making each dining experience one your taste buds will always remember.

2009 lemonade day

Lemonade Day is a community event created by Prepared 4 Life (P4L) and designed to reach the many youth that we cannot reach through our after-school programming. It transforms not only the youth who participate, but the entire community. Our ambitious goal this year is to register 25,000 lemonade stands. In the wake of Hurricane Ike, P4L is committed to ensuring that this school year is not one characterized by devastation but one marked by hope for as many youth as possible.

We invite you to be part of this upbeat, positive project that unites Houstonians of all ages and celebrates an American tradition. Last year Mayor Bill White declared an official “Lemonade Day,” the public park system opened its doors free-of-charge to our young entrepreneurs, Astros All Star Jeff Bagwell became our official spokesperson, and Lemonhead was adopted as our mascot. Thousands of youth benefited, and even more will be affected this year.

Mikel Marketing is a proud sponsor of this event and encourages everyone to support not only a great cause, but the entire community as well!

All you have to do is register today to get started! You’ll receive a backpack full of materials, including The Entrepreneur’s Workbook, which guides them through the entire process.

Lemonade Day is Sunday, May 3rd, 2009
