Farouk Systems’ Grand Opening Was A Huge Success
as Thousands Applied for Jobs

Farouk Systems Inc. continues its efforts to expand manufacturing operations for its new facility CHI USA. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Job Fair held on July 30th was a complete success! Governor Rick Perry, Mayor Bill White along with several Texas Representatives and City Council Members attended the Grand Opening. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich-who recently awarded Farouk Shami the Entrepreneur of the Year Award and Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, sent their congratulations via pre-recorded video messages. Congressman Ted Poe presented Farouk with a flag that was flown over the Texas Capital and a Certificate of Appreciation in honor of bringing jobs to Texas.

The job fair took place as part of the festivities and drew in large numbers of Houston area residents. The extensive media coverage included helicopters flying above Greenspoint Mall which showed thousands of people lined up waiting to apply. Farouk Systems sent truck loads of water to accommodate everyone who was waiting. “We received 3,800 applications on the day of the event,” said Human Resources Manager, Jennifer Ray. Some of the positions the company will fill include Engineers, Cost Accountants, Lab Technicians and Helpdesk Specialists among others. “We’ve already hired two-hundred new employees this year and expect to hire approximately one thousand more,” added Shauky Gulamani, President of Farouk Systems.

Shami looks forward to welcoming the new employees that will be a part of the company’s milestone. “I have to thank the people of Houston because they’ve been so important to the continued success of my company. Expanding my operations here in order to create new jobs and American made products is something that is important to me, my employees and my customers,” declared Shami.

Jessica Gutierrez, Director of Public Relations for Farouk Systems, Inc., did a fantastic job securing attendance from VIPs that included Carolyn Farb, Governor Rick Perry, Mayor Bill White, Miss USA, Miss Texas, famous Latin artist Bobby Pulido, Brian Courtney Wilson (gospel singer whose album just debuted # 2 on gospel charts), Houston Texans cheerleaders, plus many Houston Councilmen and Texas Representatives.

Celebration of European Wax Center’s
Second Houston Location

With over 300 in attendance, European Wax Center celebrated its second Houston location in the West University area with a Beach/Pool-themed party on Friday, August 7th. It was a night of fun, sexiness and of course lots of bare skin.

The event kicked off at 6 PM as crowds of Houston’s sceensters arrived in summer hues and flirty, pool lounge-wear, and were greeted by models looking sexy in the latest Zingara swimwear collection. The models all looked like they just came back from Brazil, thanks to Planet Beach’s dark and natural-looking spray tan on their super smooth skin, freshly waxed by the talented staff of European Wax Center.

European Wax Center took the opportunity to show off its facilities by giving guests complimentary waxing services throughout the evening. A Spin-the-Wheel game gave guests a chance to win fabulous prizes from neighborhood tenants and sponsors. The party was furnished with chic, modern furniture by Design Within Reach, and Keisha Kreation did the ever-so-elegant job of decorating the whole place. No party would be complete without a deejay spinning the best mix of lounge, 80s, hip-hop, and dance tunes. DJ Senega kept the crowd pumping all evening long.

The Food & Spirits:
Vietopia Vietnamese restaurant sponsored the event by providing an abundant assortment of their signature soft spring rolls and crispy imperial rolls, while guests also got their fingers on some savory crepes stuffed in a variety of fruit fillings, courtesy of Coco’s Crepes & Coffee. The buzz of the party was the party’s Green-tini made by 360 vodka, and French Daiquiri made of Seagram rum. Guests also enjoyed an array of savory sweets, provided by Corner Bakery Café. Paciugo set up a gelato stand in a tent by the store’s entrance serving a variety of refreshing gelatos in yummy flavors.

The charity:
As a part of their continued efforts to give back to the community, European Wax Center donated 10 percent of all sales from pre-paid services, gift certificates, and retail products during the party and throughout the Open House weekend to benefit The Women’s Fund (www.thewomensfund.org), whose mission is to educate Houston area women and girls to be advocates for their health

The Attendees:
Attendees included: EWC franchisees Mark To, Hanh Nguyen, and Shawn Bishop; EWC owners from Dallas Katherine Nguyen & Vincent Mai; EWC Regional Developer and franchisee Judd Miller, EWC managers Loren Wood, Andrea Lightfoot, Kaye Webster; Rob McKay, Jay & Nahla Kalra, Ron & Gail Guthrie, Yuki Rogers, Dr. Diane Do, Pierre Vomero, Dr. Tri Dinh, Margaret Dennison, Dan & Marnie Evans, Hanh Langlinais, Jarrod & Laura Haughn, Liem Tran; and Pat McFarland.

The Four-Step Process:
European Wax Center uses a revolutionary 100% natural beeswax and the finest polymers to create a hard, strip less wax, meaning quicker application time and significantly less pain and irritation, with better results. They are the only company that uses this type of wax. Cleanse, Protect, Wax and Rejuvenate, the awe-inspired four-step process ensures that customers receive a smooth, long-lasting wax each time. The process includes depilatory oil prep which makes a big difference in painlessness as it is applied prior to the wax to ensure it attaches only to the hair, not the skin. Afterwards the skin is treated with an ingrown hair serum, an all-natural product with lavender and chamomile to calm the area and prevent irritation. They are so confident about the quality of their gentle wax that they’re offering a FREE initial waxing to everyone at any time. Women may opt for a free initial bikini line, eyebrow or underarm waxing; men for a free initial eyebrow, ear or nose waxing.

Opening Third location in The Galleria area:
Visit European Wax Center in River Oaks Plaza at 1564 West Gray (713-524-4929), or West University location at 5154 Buffalo Speedway (713-667-2929), or third location in The Galleria area at 5000 Westheimer (opening September 7th). Thirty more locations slated to open in Houston (and 85 in Texas) will make the pleasing, affordable experience convenient for all Houstonians. For more info visit www.waxcenter.com.

Steel Lounge Underground

Steel Lounge Underground is a monthly event showcasing Houston based musical artists performing live in the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Steel Lounge Underground showcases Houston’s diversity and talent by bringing together musical artists representing a variety of genres and attracts an audience representing all walks of life. During the event, the audience is free to explore the exhibitions currently on display within the Contemporary Arts Museum.

Derek Jones (DJ Pooks) and Josh Zulu are the music curators of the event. Their focus in 2009 has been about supporting the talent based out of Houston which sometimes goes unrecognized and they intentionally choose bands and DJ's that would not normally perform together. However now they feel by mixing it up, they create an environment that allows visitors to be exposed to a variety of local music that they may have not have known about and in a venue that allows visitors to identify with the music as a form of contemporary art.

Farouk Shami - A True Innovator

By: Mimi Dinh

I first met Farouk years ago at one of his BioSilk salon events in The Galleria. He was so friendly and charming: he even handled comments about my slightly damaged hair (from the over-processed coloring and highlighting—don’t ask) with such tact and wit, that we ended up joking and laughing the whole time he was giving me hair care tips.

It’s been almost five years since the evening of our first encounter. I wasn’t sure if he would remember me when I approached him during his recent grand opening, but not only did he recognize me immediately, the first thing he said as we hugged was, “Nice hair!” It’s a HUGE compliment coming from a hair expert like Farouk!

Yep, my hair has come a long way. And so has Farouk Shami over the past two decades. He has transformed from a hair salon owner and hairdresser to patent-holder, president, and CEO of Farouk Systems Inc., a billion-dollar beauty enterprise with household-name products such as Silk Therapy, BiSsilk and CHI. Farouk is an inspired inventor and innovator: He was the first to invent an ammonia-free hair lightener and color system called SunGlitz®, after he developed an allergy to that chemical; and was also the first to invent ceramic plate in flat iron, the iconic CHI iron.

A self-described “American all the way to the bone,” Farouk was born in Ramallah, West Bank, and came here 44 years ago as a student. Today, Farouk Systems employs a team of over 2,000 hair educators in over 100 countries.

His success has a lot to do with his “continued attention to detail and follow-through,” said Greg McConnell of Modern Salon magazine. The same can be said about his recent successful job fair/grand opening event on July 30th, at which his mastery of detail was apparent. Farouk and his well-oiled team managed countless aspects of the marvelous event with aplomb: buses that transported hundreds of people from Greenspoint Mall to his corporate plant for the event; a well-organized system of applications/interviews; displays of Farouk’s tools and products; delicious BBQ food stations; a massive stage packed with exciting programs; even down to luxe porta-potties for attendees. It’s obvious this man thought of everything.

The event was a job fair and celebration of Farouk Systems’ relocation of its manufacturing facility to Houston (from China and Korea), creating more than 1,200 area jobs and generating $26 million in capital investment. The event demonstrated that Farouk is not just a pioneer in hair product development but also a leader in showcasing Texas as an “environment that encourages people to pursue their dreams, build businesses and create jobs,” as Gov. Perry said in a press conference announcing Farouk’s relocation. That makes Farouk a hero in my book, and the subject of this month’s spotlight profile.

1) What was the deciding factor for you to move your factory and manufacturing plant to Houston from Asia?
- I was given the opportunity to achieve the “American dream”. It is now my duty to help my fellowmen, by bringing jobs back to my people. I hope to set a good example to business leaders to do the same.

2) You gave up outsourcing overseas to create opportunities here for Houstonians. Are you a little worried how this move might affect your bottom line?
- Absolutely not. I believe that with innovation and automation, we are able to challenge any Chinese manufacture to succeed in quality control and price. At the beginning, I did worry a little, but I believe we can achieve with sales volume, and still be able to offer the same items, same quality at the same prices.

3) Your grand opening/job fair event was spectacular. How long did it take for you to plan this incredible event?
- A couple of months. We have a great team who’s used to doing big events like this, so it’s a team effort.

4) Out of the 1,200 job openings available, how many have been filled so far since the grand opening party?
- We have filled 300 now and are interviewing and training everyday.

5) What are some of the positions available?
- We have many openings in many areas, but we need more technicians and scientists in product development area. These are the more high paying positions.

6) Which is the most popular hair care product from Farouk Systems?
- Both the CHI & BioSilk hair products are popular all over the world. Also, our BioSilk products have been #1 in America for 7 years as consumer’s choice.

7) Which is the most popular hair tool from Farouk Systems?
- The CHI iron and dryer were inducted to Hall of Fame in the beauty industry. Just about every female in America has a CHI flat iron.

8) You’re right! I’m one of them.
I’ve seen the Farouk Systems name in high profile events everywhere – Miami Fashion Week, the Latin Grammy’s, The Oscars … Now that you have relocated here, will you be more involved in Houston events?

- Not only in Houston but we plan to be more involved with events in every city in the US. We plan to fill more jobs in many other cities.

9) Who is your target market?
- The whole world (laugh)

10) Has the slow economy affected your business?
- Not really. We are expanding and we plan to double or triple the business.

11) When you started Farouk Systems, did you ever think it would grow into such an empire like this?
- I’m the type of person that if I’m going to do something, I’ve got to be the best at it. So I have always believed in myself and my work.

12) Did Farouk Systems become an overnight success or did you go through some challenges at first?
- There is no short cut. If you want to succeed, it takes hard work and determination. If you fall, just get up, dust yourself off and start over.

13) What advice can you give young entrepreneurs out there?

- Work hard and believe in yourself.

14) Of all the places you have traveled to, where is your favorite place to visit?
- My favorite place is wherever my workers are – so it is Houston now.

15) What qualities do you most value in a business person? In a friend?
- Honesty and loyalty

16) How would your friends describe you?
- A good friend

17) When you are not working, what do you like to do for fun?
- I read on materials to develop new products. I have a passion for what I do. It’s my life.

18) What are your future plans?
- To be the biggest and the best manufacturer of small appliances in the world.

European Wax Center is Opening 3rd Houston Location

Not content simply to revolutionize waxing by rendering the process both pain-free and pocketbook-friendly, European Wax Center now aims to extend its reach to every Houstonian seeking sexy, smooth skin for the summer season.

What: European Wax Center will celebrate its third Houston location, in the Galleria area, with a French Rviviera themed party on October 2, 2009 from 6 to 9 PM. The Center will offer volunteer guests free waxing services to demonstrate the enjoyably easy and virtually painless Parisian wax and four-step process. Guests can enjoy a wax unlike any they've ever experienced and then immediately return to the festivities to sip wines and sample delish French delicacies and play games for prizes. Meanwhile, models wearing elegant Zingara swimwear will tantalize guests with glimpses of their flawless, freshly waxed skin. The event is FREE and open to the public.

Secrets to Their Success: European Wax Center's founders -- siblings Joshua & David Coba and Jessica Streiner -- use an exclusive, patented wax along with an innovative process so that the wax adheres only to hair, not skin, to create a premium, painless waxing experience not found anywhere else.

"European Wax Center introduces The Ultimate Body Wax Experience," explains Judd Miller, Texas Area Developer for the franchise. "It's specifically designed for sensitive skin, with significantly less pain and a much quicker application time. It offers better results without any downtime." Those ingredients alone might ensure success, but Miller says the Center offers even more. "We're the only business dedicated solely to waxing. As a result, no one knows waxing as well as European Wax Center. In addition to hiring only licensed estheticians, we require an additional 40 hours of training in how to use our wax and exceed customer service expectations."

Their Story: For this remarkable achievement, the founders "spent 10 years refining every aspect of the company and scouring the earth for a wax that wouldn't scour skin." According to Miller, that explains European Wax Center's tremendous success since the first stand-alone facility opened only five years ago. Today, there are over 75 franchises in the United States (17 already open, with the rest slated to open soon). Houston alone can expect 30 more locations over the next few years, including new spots opening in Memorial, and I-10 & Bunker Hill areas. Already opened are locations in River Oaks and West University areas.

All told, European Wax Center is waxing idyllic. With a goal of 1,000 franchises over the next six years, the founders are well on the way to transforming wax from a grooming event to be endured into a spa experience to be savored.

Their Products: The same expertise opens an additional avenue of service for the franchise: European Wax Center brand products. Their first product is a serum to prevent ingrown hairs, but guests can expect a full series of specialty items designed specifically to increase the benefits of waxing. -- From the slow grow body lotion that encourages finer and softer hair re-growth to the eyebrow sealer that keeps unruly eyebrows in place all day to the pre wax exfoliate made with no texture, and all natural ingredients that goes on feeling smooth but within seconds of massaging it into the skin, fruit enzymes work their magic to remove dead skin leaving your skin feeling baby soft. -- All products are designed to be used with the European Wax Center ultimate waxing system and many of which don't exist on the market in any other form. The full line will be introduced within the next 5 months.

Visit European Wax Center in River Oaks Plaza at 1564 West Gray (713-524-4929), or West University location at 5154 Buffalo. Speedway (713-667-2929), or third location in The Galleria area at 5000 Westheimer (opening September 7th). Thirty more locations slated to open in Houston (and 85 in Texas) will make the pleasing, affordable experience convenient for all Houstonians. For more info visit www.waxcenter.com

New Gallery

In 1986, Thom Andriola moved New Gallery from Taos, New Mexico to its current location in Houston, Texas. He began his art gallery career in Los Angeles with the Silvan Simone Gallery in the mid 1970s.

Prior to creating his own gallery, Thom was the director of the Taos Art Association in Taos, New Mexico. There he began to develop a stable of artists that grew out of the second generation Abstract Expressionists. Artists such as Tony Magar, Larry Calcagno and Louis Ribak Emil Bisttram, along with Minimalist Larry Bell and Surrealist Lee Mullican, became the foundation of his gallery group.

“Art has been flowing around and through me continuously all these years, and although my concepts have broadened considerably, there remains a basic essence of belief that has remained constant. That is, my faith in honest, original intelligence conveyed through the unique creative object of art. It is not about any style or fashion, nor any rigid adherence to abstract, figurative or conceptual ideas. Genuine expressive genius comes in many forms, yet it is certainly not common and is somewhat elusive,” says Thom Andriola.

Machu Picchu – An Adventure of A Lifetime

"At the height of their power, the Inca empire was bigger than any single European state. Bigger than the Aztec. Even bigger than the lands of Ivan the Great of Russia. It's as if a single power had managed to put a vast stretch from Moscow to Cairo under its dominion..." – Le, the world-class traveler of our group.

One certainly gets a sense of scale while hiking to Machu Picchu. First you hike for days, sometimes enjoying the experience, sometimes simply enduring, all for the simple aspiration of seeing the Lost City of the Incas. You walk, you climb, you ascend to dizzying (literally) heights. You encounter ruins scattered all along the way, and you soak in verdant mountain views that stretch for miles and miles before you.

But before all that, you prepare. In fact, our preparations began well before we hit the ground in Peru. Climbing a mountain is no small task, so we were all committed to being in tip-top shape. I even ran my first half marathon to ready myself for this trip! In fact, the week of the trip, I had worked up to running 5 to 7 miles a day in addition to other activities like cardio, weight training, yoga and core strengthening. After all, turning back wouldn’t be an option once we were on the mountain.

The planning continued even in Peru. On one hand, we wanted to bring as little as possible since we'd have to carry everything in our own backpacks. Then again, everything we'd heard told us to prepare for rain.

If you remember from last month's newsletter, we'd lucked out – the weather in Tikicaca and Cusco had been beautiful. It was hard to envision the possibility of rain on the trail. At the same time, the last thing I wanted was to be caught wet on the trail or catch a cold. After weighing the odds, I decided to buy a disposable poncho: light enough to fold into a little napkin and cheap enough to throw away afterwards.

Our guide Jimmy from the PachaMama tour gave us some guidelines and instructions for the imminent hike. We were each to pack two bags: everyday needs in our backpacks on the trails, and other belongings (change of clothes, socks, soap, etc.) in ten duffel bags, one for each of us which would be carried by our group tour’s seventeen porters. They were amazing - carrying our duffel bags, tents, sleeping bags, along with everything needed to cook three meals a day during the four-day trail.

Day One

"The Inca trail offers travelers a wonderful combination of scenery including magnificent mountains, subtropical vegetation and the amazing Inca ruins, no? This will be an unforgettable adventure," promised Jimmy, our tour guide extraordinaire.

It all started with a hearty breakfast, then off we went, through the gate and onto the trail. The first day was relatively easy with mostly flat roads. We hiked from 7 AM ‘til 6 PM everyday, but paused frequently to admire the captivating series of ruins along the trail, and stopped about an hour for lunch. Our guides, Jimmy or Ricardo, would offer a little bit of history, we would absorb as much of the awe-inspiring ruins as we could, and then we would move on to the next magnificent remnant of an ancient civilization.

Some ruins we got to hike through, some we only viewed from a distance, but one thing they had in common: they were all breathtaking. As we were admiring their beauty, it struck me that this was more than a hike up a mountain; but rather, a trip backwards through time.

We all got a solid dose of educational history about Peru and the Incas through Jimmy, but this trip really brought something home. History should be experienced, not just read or taught. It's amazing to walk through the past, to see the same stones used by ancient peoples, to walk the same paths with the same (well, okay, similar) spare comforts.

Our first day hike definitely whetted my appetite for more. And for lunch too.

We had no idea what to expect from our first meal on the trail. You can imagine our delighted surprise when we arrived at our first base camp for lunch. The porters, who had rushed past us with their heavy loads along the trail, had already set up a lunch tent and a long communal table and chairs for our party. They were waiting for us with bowls of warm water and soap to wash our hands before the meal.

Then, as we sat around the table exchanging stories from the morning hike of our first day, the porters brought in the first lunch course, a delicious vegetable soup. It turned out that every single meal along this fantastic hike consisted of three to four courses, with different, delicious Peruvian dishes for each meal.

The afternoon mirrored the morning – a relatively easy hike punctuated with stops at each ruin followed by a brief history lesson. The scenery was spectacular with incredible views of the mountains and snow peaks of the Andes. As we went through the Urubamba Valley, the vegetation became much more tropical as we went through lush jungle and waterfalls.

We continued our trek through farmland and woodlands, and arrived to our first camp at Wayllabamba just after 5:30 PM, a bit earlier than expected, to find our tents waiting for us. While everybody decided to take a walk, I decided to stay behind and soak in the sights. I was deeply moved by the sight of vast mountains stretching as far as my eye could see, washed with every shade of green. Overhead, the sky was clear, and I watched a watercolor painting come to life as the sun set. The atmosphere there was so quiet and still, as though the mountains and valley absorbed all the kinetic energy and left only profound stillness and silence behind, with only the whisper of mountain wind slipped into my ears. It’s only been one day and I've already learned it's possible to feel perfectly at home even thousand miles away from home.

It had been a long day of physical exertion and mental explorations, and I was glad to be called to the dinner tent for “happy hour”, just as the group returned, to nosh on the appetizer provided, along with tea and juice. On different days, they served items like crackers, popcorn, cakes and cheese stuffed in fried wontons. It’s true that everything tastes better when you are camping surrounded by natural beauty.

We didn’t mind waiting for dinner after "happy hour" since we were too busy listening to everyone’s entertaining stories about their first day on the trail. As we finished our feast and prepared for our first night sleep in our tents, I couldn’t wait to try out my one luxury accommodation.

Prior to taking the hike, I had asked Jimmy if it would be okay if I brought a rubber water pouch. I wanted him to fill it with hot water to keep me warm in my sleeping bag. Hotel Titilaka inspired this idea when we stayed there a few days ago. Who says we can’t have a little pampering just because we’re camping?

Jimmy approved the idea, and while my group all teased me about it, as I slipped into the sleeping bag, a big smile was spreading all over my face. The juxtaposition of a tent and sleeping bag in chilly air with the luxury of a warm water pouch yielded more satisfaction than I would have thought possible. It was like heaven, and I slept like a baby.

Day Two

“Today is the toughest day when we will reach the highest peak of the Inca Trail (4,200m), Warmiwañusca, also known as Dead Woman’s Pass” – Warned our other guide, Ricardo.

The combination of the high altitude and the rough steep climb along some parts of the trail made for a very difficult day. If you read last month's newsletter, as I alluded earlier, you may remember I faced a brief but unpleasant adjustment to the high altitude of Peru when we arrived at Lake Tikicaca. I found myself wishing for an oxygen mask once again.

Over the course of the day, the altitude caught up with me as I slowly lost my mojo. My head started to hurt, my energy wavered and faded, my whole body ached with each grudging step I took.

But I have to look at the positive: it's wonderful to hike on the trail with a group. Aside from the safety of being in a group, you can also break free and be on your own by just changing your pace. Sometimes it offered me a moment of respite from the group where I could just breathe in the clean, damp air and look around at the vast mountains and forest. At other times, it offered a nice opportunity to connect with the others, like when my husband and our friend Donna took their time to linger with me. In fact, the three of us ended up keeping each other company for most of the day while the rest of the group pressed onwards and upwards.

Sometimes Jimmy would stop and rest with us. He and the other guide, Ricardo, would take turns with one at the front of the group, and one at the end, so they could always keep an eye on all of us. It was an efficient way to make sure no one got lost or left behind.

We finally dragged ourselves to the top of Dead Woman’s Pass, joining the rest of our group as we stood at the peak, admiring its beautiful panoramic view. It is the challenge that conveys value to accomplishment, and at that moment, standing on top of that mountain was absolutely priceless.

Then came the rain. All I can say is thank God I bought that cheap poncho. I covered myself including my backpack with that thing, as the heavens opened up and unleashed a torrent of rain from its dark canopy. The rain stopped as quickly as it came, lasting only about twenty minutes. Unfortunately, it left the trail just wet enough to make the rest of the hike slippery and even more difficult.

At this point, I could tell I wasn’t the only one whose mojo was slipping away. Seeing that we could use some help, some of the guys were slowing down to keep us company and carry our bags. What gentlemen!

Then, things slowly started to unravel. First, my husband slipped on one of those wet, sharp rocks and had a painful fall. And just as soon as he finally stood up and recomposed himself, one of my shoes gave up on me. Half the sole literally came undone. Luckily, my companions were right there to help me tie some strings around my shoe to keep the sole intact and functioning for the rest of the trail.

I felt weak with a pounding headache for much of the height. I had serious doubts whether I was going to make it, and we still had a few more hours to go before reaching the base camp. Bless Donna for her encouragement; or perhaps I should say her bribe.

Donna told me that she had brought along some packets of Ramen noodles she'd bought in Cusco town. You may laugh at me for this, but at that moment, the only thing that kept me on that trail was the thought of eating Ramen noodles. I am laughing as I write this because I normally never eat Ramen noodles (except like, maybe once a year). But at that moment, my body craved that bowl of familiar, satisfying Ramen noodles more than any fancy cuisine. After a week of Peruvian foods and two days of intense physical exertion up a mountain, Ramen noodles seemed like the most delicious, exotic delicacy.

The last hour on that trail seemed like eternity but our slow team finally made it. Once we reached our base camp in Pacaymayo, I downed some Tylenol and immediately passed out in my tent. When I woke up, I felt like a new woman! And as promised, Donna had made some Ramen noodles and brought the steaming cup to my tent, since I had missed "happy hour". Yum, Ramen has never tasted so good.

I then joined the group for dinner. What a difference a few hours can make! I felt energized as I joined in the stories and laughter. But the best news is, the worst is over and the rest of the trail would be much easier.

Day Three

"Twenty years ago, I was a poor medical student with an even poorer plan to see Machu Picchu, so I ended up with a loaf of bread and a bottle of water to last me three days. Hearing stories about the wonders along the trail made me want to come back and do it the right way this time" – Tri, my husband and archeologist wanna-be.

There's something magical about the trail to Machu Picchu. I will not belabor the beauty of the trail, as words cannot fully describe the majestic of it all. Check out the photos we took along the way, and hopefully you'll see what I mean, although I know the pictures can't capture the full experience. It's so different when you're surrounded by 360 degrees of history and nature.

And to think, the Incas lived with this beauty every single day. I'd spent much of the time wondering about the Incas. Their civilization, though burned brightly, was brief. Their individual lives were hard, especially after the Spanish arrived. Did they realize the magnitude of beauty surrounding their lives and truly enjoy it while they had it? I wonder if they took the natural beauty for granted, the way we do with our creature comforts. Regardless, during this hike I appreciated both.

The morning of Day Three, I felt like a brand new person, vibrant with energy. I found myself skipping, almost running along the trail. We continue trekking towards Puya Patamarka (Cloud-level town), another important archaeological monument, where our yummy lunch was served once again by our invincible porters.

After a short break we continue walking to Wiñay Huayna (Forever Young), a beautiful Inca construction, for a short visit. Then trekked our way down to our base camp near the ruins, and found a treat waiting for us: hot showers! We had used body wipes to keep ourselves clean for the past few days, but it was still utterly luxurious to wash away the sweat and grime of the trail with warm, soapy water and to shampoo our hair properly.

After dinner, we eagerly discussed our plan for the next day. We had purposefully scheduled our entire trip to coincide with the Inca's solstice so we could see the once-a-year sunrise bathing the whole city of Machu Picchu. So we decided to wake at 3 AM so we could be first in line before the gate opened to hike up to Machu Picchu.

Since this was our last night with the Pachamama tour, all of the porters came to our tent to say goodbye. They had been so wonderful, laboriously setting up our base camps, preparing meals, cleaning up, so that we could enjoy (or endure, depending on the day!) the full experience of the hike. We put together a generous tip for everyone, and we could see the appreciation in their eyes, as my husband (the only fluent Spanish-speaker in our group) offered them all a warm and heartfelt thank you.

Day Four – Machu Picchu

"We can only marvel at the beauty of Machu Picchu and the fact that the legendary stone monuments still survive against all odds to our time for all mankind to admire before returning eventually to dust in the wind..." – Le, also the philosopher of our group.

We were so excited that we had no problem waking up at 3 AM. We ate a good breakfast and packed our things for the last, and most exciting, part of our Incan adventure. When we left the base camp at 4 AM it was still so dark, we had to use a flashlight to guide our walk to the gate!

As we had hoped, we were the first to arrive, but within 15 minutes, people started to show up. A long line quickly began to form behind us. At 5 AM, the gate opened, and everyone immediately lurched into a fast walk towards Machu Picchu. It's the craziest hike I've ever experienced: with a flash light in hand, it was ‘every man for himself’ as we were walking as fast as we could, sometimes running, through the forest on rocky trails in the dark for an hour. Now looking back, it’s amazing to me that none of us tripped and fell. It would not have been fun if one of us twisted an ankle or broke a leg during this crazy hike. But at the time, our adrenaline and excitement took over any fear.

An hour later (remember that comment I made about sense of scale? Yeah, this is why the Spanish never found Machu Picchu, why they never plundered it: it is the definition of out of the way!), we arrived at the Inti Punku (the Sun Gate). We stopped to take some pictures, then set off for another short walk into the Machu Picchu ruins.

After three full days of hiking, our fourth day seemed like nothing, even though we had to hike in the dark! We arrived before the sun rises, sweating but still full of energy. We even had plenty of time to take more pictures.

The breathtaking view of Machu Picchu combined with the fresh mountain air was intoxicating. Everywhere we turned was a gorgeous view of an ancient wonder of graceful and resolute mountains ascending into the distance, of verdant overgrowth and carefully manicured grassy terraces.

Everything came to a hush as the sun began to rise. Machu Picchu was built based on an astronomical calendar, with the temple perfectly placed to catch the sun's rays on the solstice. It's said on the solstice a strange triangular beam of light would form by the Intihuatana, a sacred stone believed to be the hitching post to the sun. This beam appears only on the solstice, and only for a few minutes. Most Inca centers had this stone to "tie the sun back," the Spanish invaders destroyed all Intihuatanas except the one at Machu Picchu. I couldn't believe we were here to see it every second of it.

After that once-in-a-lifetime, I-can't-believe-I'm-here-to-see-it experience, we met up with our guide Jimmy again. He gave us one last history tidbit about Machu Picchu, then left us to explore on our own.

Machu Picchu has been described as ‘an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization’ when it was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1983. Located about 8,000 ft above sea level, it is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley through the Urubamba River in Peru. We took our time walking all over this magnificent ruin, stopping to take pictures, watching the llamas playing in a field, and just leisurely soaking it all in.

By mid afternoon, we saw the sign to Huyana Picchu Mountain, and decided to check it out, although without much hope that we could get in. Our guide Jimmy had warned us that it would be impossible to climb Huyana Picchu and see the solstice on Machu Picchu because both require standing in line early in the morning. Apparently they only allow 400 people each day to climb Huyana Picchu, and the quota gets filled very quickly. But as luck would have it, when we arrived, we found that the five of us would be able to make it as the last people for the day. I was number 399 and Donna was 400, the very last person! I was shocked with disbelief and excited that I was about to achieve another goal from this trip.

Huayna Picchu is a mountain in Peru that bends around the Urubamba River. Its peak is almost 9,000 ft above sea level, or about 1,200 ft higher than Machu Picchu. The climb was so steep and slippery that there were ropes and steel cables on most of the walls for safety reasons. But after the last three days of the Inca Trail, we were “experienced” hikers now. We reached the top of the peak, drank in the view, took our pictures, and descended again in less than an hour.

By the time we reached the bus, still huffing and puffing, we all let out a long sigh as we recalled the nutty day that had started at 3 AM with non-stop action until now.

We met Jimmy at the bus stop half an hour late in the town of Aguas Calientes. He led us to a nice local restaurant for our last meal together. Jimmy and his team were so attentive and took such wonderful care of us; our affection for him made it hard to say goodbye.

Conquering a Mountain

"This experience had enriched the canvas of our lives beyond measures." – Duke, the adventurer and poet of our group.

The trip didn’t just take me to a different country; it transported me to another world: an ancient, primitive land barely (if at all) tamed by humankind.

There's an anthropological concept called liminality, which is the idea of being caught between two worlds. You hear about liminality in myths and rituals. This is why so many rite-of-passages include sending the young person out into the wild, and why so many myths have their heroes traveling great distances and crossing the threshold between the worlds of mortals and gods.

Would it be exaggerating to say that Machu Picchu has been my liminal experience? Certainly, it transported me between many worlds: modern and ancient, Western and proto-Western, urban and jungle, comfortable and primitive.

It's more than just real appreciation for small pleasures (like Ramen noodles, a clean toilet and hot showers). It's learning to appreciate the scope of our world.

Okay, I know I'm on the verge of sounding all mystical woo-woo here, so let's just focus on the pure, visceral, physical experience: we live in a world filled with wonder, grace and beauty. When we replace great expanses of space with dense urban centers, when we substitute the clamor of daily life for the utter silence of night atop a mountain, when we blind ourselves to a great canvas of stars above with the 24-hour lights of our cities, we lose something.

Don't get me wrong: I love my urban existence, with its rich art and culture scenes. But some deep part of us needs both. I remember standing with Tri next to the open community faucet while the porters were washing dishes after dinner. We gazed into the sky and saw what seemed like a million stars not just twinkling, but blazing like diamonds. Grimy clothes, messy hair, primitive living, yet all I could see around me was beauty. We felt like a couple of kids having the adventure of our lives. As we stood there cuddling under the stars, it was also one of the most romantic moments I've experienced.

I can't help but think, as I settle back into my daily existence, that I will carry a little bit of Machu Picchu with me, that I will have learned to see the world from a slightly different perspective – and I don't mean from 14,000 feet up! Not only have I accomplished three goals from this trip (climbing both Machu Picchu and Huyana Picchu, and seeing the solstice), I can call myself a true camper and hiker now. This journey has given me confidence in my own abilities. You don't have to be an Ironman to climb Machu Picchu – trust me, I proved that one! You just need to have desire, determination, and an open mind.

Nothing is impossible.

Dynamo Sign Mexican Forward Luis Angel Landín

HOUSTON, TX (Thursday, August 20, 2009) -- The Houston Dynamo announced today the club has signed Mexican forward Luis Angel Landín as the club's first designated player. Landin will join the club on a loan deal that runs through the end of 2010, at which time the club will have an option to acquire his rights permanently. Per league and club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Landín, 24, has appeared five times for the Mexican national team. He comes to the Dynamo on loan from Mexican club Cruz Azul, where he scored seven goals in the 2009 Clausura season. Landín was on loan to Cruz Azul from Monarcas Morelia, where he played from 2007-08.

Born in Zamora, Michoacán, Mexico, Landín, the first Mexican player to sign for the Dynamo, came up through the Pachuca youth system and made his professional debut with Pachuca as a 19-year-old in 2004. He first caught the Dynamo's attention playing against Houston in the 2007 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. Later that year, Landín netted the decisive penalty kick in the shootout against Chivas that decided the Champions' Cup title.

He will be eligible to play for the Dynamo in MLS games pending receipt of his P1 work visa. Our New Service - Email Marketing

Mikel Marketing is excited to announce the newly added service of Email Marketing - A cost effective way to market your business, especially in this economy. We can create for you a customize e-mail list that suits your needs or help you expand an existing list by append solutions.

To ‘append’ means to ‘add on’, as in adding email addresses to existing client and prospect records for those you don’t have yet. Don’t have an existing database? That’s okay, we can create an entirely new list of qualified, permission-based consumer OR business email list, customized to fit your needs. Consumer emails can be customized by with specific criteria (from household income to age, from gender to zip code, etc.); and business emails can be customized by with specific criteria (from title codes to major industry, etc.). Your list can be comprised from anywhere in the US.

Why is Email Marketing effective? Email Marketing is the ideal tool for anyone interested in gaining leads or increasing exposure of their products/services in a cost effective and efficient manner. In addition to a higher response rate from your target audience than direct mail, Email Marketing also saves time and money. It also brings in more quantifiable results, deliver credible, quantifiable, documented leads, and what’s more, a campaign can also track read rates, click through rates, and sign-ins.

Where are the qualified email addresses derived from? In addition to our own list of Mikel Marketing Newsletter subscribers comprised of more than 50,000 email, our Master Database are derived from a third party partner with solid privacy policies and opt-in data fields. We guarantee a clean list everytime and will give you a full refund for every email that’s bounced or not workable.

What is a qualified email address? To ensure that your email will not be sent straight to the junk box, all of our email address databases are 100% opt-in and permission based. This means that every recipient has expressively given permission to receive third party communication.

How do I know these address are current? The master database from which we pull all addresses is continuously updated from new sources on a monthly basis. The database is also processed against both the USPS National Change of Address File (NCOA) and the Delivery Sequence File (DSF).

Our 3 Email Marketing Services:

Appended List

Mikel Marketing will match your existing list with the master database of more than 14 million business records or 210 million consumer records. During the matching process, whenever there is a match found with the business name and contact title in your list, the corresponding record is added from the master database to your list. (The same is true for a consumer list) This list will then be yours to keep.

Customized List

If you do not have an existing list, Mikel Marketing can generate an internal database tailored to fit your company’s needs based on specific criteria provided by you. When selecting criteria, the sky is the limit.

Consumer List Criteria: neighborhood, area codes, zip codes, age, income, gender, marital status, home value, hobbies, voter info, ethnicity, etc.

Business List Criteria: industry, business name, location, SIC codes, NAICS codes, sales volume, square footage, contact person, etc.

Pre-Fab List

If you are not interested in appending a list or building your own, Mikel Marketing suggests using our Pre-Fab email list, comprised of more than 100,000 emails. The addresses on our list are a combination of the Mikel Marketing Newsletter subscribers (50k+ emails) and an additional list built based on Houston’s most notable zips codes: 77056, 77057, 77098, 77002, 77005, 77006, 7709, 77024, 77027, and 77046.
